The level of competition is unprecedented. With six quarterbacks in NAU football's fall camp, head coach Jerome Souers has never seen such a set of potential signal-callers during his previous 13 years with the Lumberjacks.
"I think the competitive tension is as high as any on the field," Souers said. "You can't have an off day."
While the Jacks enter the 2011 season with six quarterbacks on their roster, three are competing for the starting job. Senior Chasen Stangel served as the backup to starter Michael Herrick last season, but he is challenged by junior Cary Grossart and redshirt freshman Chase Cartwright for the job.

Re: NAU deciding on No. 1 quarterback
We had 6 QBs at UOP, but only 4 got any PT, and one of those was utilized as the punter after the combo-kicker got hurt falling down a flight of stairs visiting a friend at Stanford. The two fifth-year seniors blew it, leading to the redshirt freshperson who later took New Mexico to a bowl game. The guy who punted transferred to Weber, where he screwed Sac over two years in a row coming off the bench with quick kicks before getting moved to WR for his senior year. He's now the special teams coordinator for the Raiders. The fifth guy didn't play until he transferred to Hofstra, where he took the Flying Dutchmen to the playoffs before being drafted by the Whiners, who cut him after sending him to NFL-Europe, where he hurt his shoulder. The sixth guy became SH.
The overall results of that were a 3-8 record, a short game-winning highlight shown on ESPN the next Thursday, and the loss of the team a week before Christmas.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Sounds like EWU's QB situation last spring. Pretty sure we had 6 as well.

Sounds like what we will have heading into the 2012 season once Fleming is gone.Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:Sounds like EWU's QB situation last spring. Pretty sure we had 6 as well.

Did NAU recruit ndsu/scottsdale QB Ryan Stanford?? #3 qb in arizona last year
Re: NAU deciding on No. 1 quarterback
The internets provided no information that I could find about Stanford's schools of interest. ASU and UofA get all the glory/attention regarding high school recruiting down here. NAU gets squat for attention.lakesbison wrote:Did NAU recruit ndsu/scottsdale QB Ryan Stanford?? #3 qb in arizona last year
I did see that NDSU recruited four players from Arizona. Must have been a good sell to get kids to leave suburban Phoenix for Fargo winters (not my personal views....I've lived in cold and don't mind it....just stating the average Arizonan gripes that it's cold at the movie theatre).
Big Fluffy...you can do better than that, lakes.
Re: NAU deciding on No. 1 quarterback
His rivals page says his only offer was from NDSU with no Arizona school showing any interest, which I have a hard time believing. Then again, those sites are maintained by people not connected to the kids who need someone else feeding them the recruiting info.mtjack wrote:The internets provided no information that I could find about Stanford's schools of interest. Also, I completely agree about people from the Valley - a bunch of pussies who need sweatshirts to go to the mall when its 105° out because there's "too much AC".
