If society has an obligation to the underclass, what obligation does the underclass have to society?

How can anyone sanely expect someone to work 40 hours a week at a 7-11 when they can maintain the same lifestyle sitting on their pathetic, non-productive asses?
Poverty is not as easy as Tman makes it out to be, especially for women. The lazy bums you see on the street corners or the tenants in Tbag's neighbor's building are the exception and make up a small fraction of the poor. Most poor are women and children, the elderly, the mentally ill, veterans and working families.

What does the underclass owe to society? To try. Most do to. The few that don't are used as poster children to keep the middle class distracted while greedy conks to steal their money and give it to defense contractors and Wall Street.
Serious question, D...

...and I'm not including folks who are infirm, handicapped or caring for a handicapped person...

...if I make poor life choices, move to a quaint Wisconsin community, abandon use of whatever level of education I received, experiment with drugs and become addicted to heroin, resort back to an infantile mindset and begin collecting cats which forces me to steal from others to support my drug addiction and feed my 85 cats, cannot find work due to my unreliability and immature conduct...

...go on government assistance: food stamps, cash assistance, section 8 housing, medicare (or disability)...

...and what point do I become responsible for my actions?

Is this an acceptable form of social parasitic behavior?

How about the young girl who drops out of HS to move in with her 24 yr old unemployed drug-dealer BF...

...who after her 3rd BF and abortion, concludes the way to "keep" her man is to have the child...

...which pushes the BF away anyway...

...leaving her an unemployed, uneducated, unskilled, single mother...

...but rather than signing up for the nearest "daycare/early start" program so she can return and finish her schooling...

...she hooks up with another guy and pops out bastard #2.

At what point is she responsible for her own actions?

...or the young, unskilled dropout who spends their life working a series of poverty-level minimum wage jobs, relying on govt. assistance for food and medical?

...or the young gal who bartends/waitresses relying on her attractiveness to earn her money, only to wake up at 50, unemployed/unemployable?

...or the hotheaded Montanan who plows his crotch rocket into the side of a building after leaving Mo's one night, winding up as a mentally handicapped/NDSU fan who goes around challenging the local Po to fights day after day?

Seriously.

Is government responsible for caring for those too fucking stupid to care for themselves?

If you or I wake up tomorrow and find ourselves homeless, because we blew all our money on golf clubs or wine...

...should our government be morally or legally responsible for our care and shelter?

Truthfully...

...IMHO, the noble, responsible decision would be to head off into the mountains, into a non-riparian area, and pull the trigger.

Loving and compassionate.

"Giving back" to society by not detracting/subtracting from the level of care/assistance available to people who genuinely had no choice.

While govt. cannot encourage/legislate this form of social justice...

...NGO's can.

Rather than supporting infanticide...ending a life not begun...

...why not create an NGO which provides education and counseling to those who've chosen NOT to live a productive life. It could be named, "Planned Responsibility".

Those bums put about as much energy into that fight as they do their everyday lives..............so it failed miserably.

I like the idea though, we just need more aggressive, motivated, self starting bums. I will start the bum fight thread.

Agreed. Look who's not paying their fair share.

Income tax data (08')
Top 1%: earned 20% AGI, paid 38% of income taxes
Top 5%: earned 34.73% AGI, paid 58.72% of income taxes
Top 10%: earned 45.77% AGI, paid 69.94% of income taxes
Top 25%: earned 67.38% AGI, paid 86.34% of income taxes
Top 50%: earned 87.25% AGI, paid 97.3% of income taxes
Bottom 50%: earned 12.75% AGI, paid 2.7% of income taxes

Looks like the "so called rich" are paying MORE than their fair share of income taxes.

So lets put income figures into that, just for fun. According to a similar table posted yesterday, if a wage earner makes more than 35,000 a year, that puts them in the TOP 50% OF ALL WAGE EARNERS. So there is still 50% out there earning LESS than 35,000 a year.

Tell me again how we can squeeze out trillions of dollars a year in taxes out of folks living right at and below the poverty level.

Compared to the non-American population of underachievers, self-proclaimed victims, lazy pieces of ****, or alcoholics/druggies, our poor live like f'n royalty.

They are all parasitic tapeworms, but the American tapeworm is the among most vile, offensive, and well-subsidized of them all.
Agreed.
"...........In fact, other government surveys show that most of the persons whom the government defines as “in poverty” are not poor in any ordinary sense of the term. The overwhelming majority of the poor have air conditioning, cable TV, and a host of other modern amenities. They are well housed, have an adequate and reasonably steady supply of food, and have met their other basic needs, including medical care. Some poor Americans do experience significant hardships, including temporary food shortages or inadequate housing, but these individuals are a minority within the overall poverty population..........

..............Yet if poverty means lacking nutritious food, adequate warm housing, and clothing for a family, relatively few of the more than 30 million people identified as being “in poverty” by the Census Bureau could be characterized as poor.[2] While material hardship definitely exists in the United States, it is restricted in scope and severity. The average poor person, as defined by the government, has a living standard far higher than the public imagines.

As scholar James Q. Wilson has stated, “The poorest Americans today live a better life than all but the richest persons a hundred years ago.”[3] In 2005, the typical household defined as poor by the government had a car and air conditioning. For entertainment, the household had two color televisions, cable or satellite TV, a DVD player, and a VCR. If there were children, especially boys, in the home, the family had a game system, such as an Xbox or a PlayStation.[4] In the kitchen, the household had a refrigerator, an oven and stove, and a microwave. Other household conveniences included a clothes washer, clothes dryer, ceiling fans, a cordless phone, and a coffee maker.
The home of the typical poor family was not overcrowded and was in good repair. In fact, the typical poor American had more living space than the average European. The typical poor American family was also able to obtain medical care when needed. By its own report, the typical family was not hungry and had sufficient funds during the past year to meet all essential needs.
Poor families certainly struggle to make ends meet, but in most cases, they are struggling to pay for air conditioning and the cable TV bill as well as to put food on the table. Their living standards are far different from the images of dire deprivation promoted by activists and the mainstream media.
Regrettably, annual Census reports not only exaggerate current poverty, but also suggest that the number of poor persons[5] and their living conditions have remained virtually unchanged for four decades or more. In reality, the living conditions of poor Americans have shown significant improvement over time.
Consumer items that were luxuries or significant purchases for the middle class a few decades ago have become commonplace in poor households. In part, this is caused by a normal downward trend in price following the introduction of a new product. Initially, new products tend to be expensive and available only to the affluent. Over time, prices fall sharply, and the product saturates the entire population, including poor households.
As a rule of thumb, poor households tend to obtain modern conveniences about a dozen years after the middle class. Today, most poor families have conveniences that were unaffordable to the middle class not too long ago......"

It is that easy, if someone actually has an ounce of responsibility. Don't breed and add more mouths to feed in this world if you cannot support your own existence. If illegals can work hard, support their expenses here, and ship back money to their families in Mexico, then why can't our underclass show the same work ethic? I'll tell you why, because they don't have to, and live a pretty good life sucking off the tit of government benefits.
Because our "Super Poor" underclass are infirm, mentally ill, elderly or addicted to drugs and alcohol and thus unfit for gainful employment. You really think living off the government is a "pretty good life"!? You're **** crazy and don't know what you're talking about.

One thing that bothers me is: How are people on food stamps able to buy things that have absolutely no nutritional value? Now I have very little against giving food stamps to those that need them, but do they just allow whatever food to be bought without any limits? And if not, how do the people get by the system? It seems like everytime I'm behind someone in line who's using them, it looks like 30% of the food is beneficial and 70% is junk. Maybe not though...that's just my perception of it.

I look at what anybody and everybody buys at the grocery store, and more than 70% of all of it is junk. People do not know how to prepare meals themselves these days, regardless of their financial status.

BS. Had to dig up a post from last March when SH claimed the same thing:

The % is extremely low.
"The most recent study of food stamp usage by service members was conducted in 2003 before significant gains in military compensation occurred. Even at that time, only 2100 service members were on food stamps, which was about one tenth of one percent of the active duty force.

Since 2002, military basic pay has increased by 42 percent, housing allowances by 83 percent and food allowance by 40 percent -- compared to a 32 percent rise in private-sector salaries, according to Defense Department compensation officials.

Almost any service member who qualifies for food stamps today has a large family and lives in base housing. Most of them only qualify because the value of base housing is not considered as income by the Department of Agriculture in determining food stamp eligibility.

In fiscal 2008, a total of 328 service members received Family Subsistence Supplemental Allowance (FSSA) at some point during the year. That was 0.02 percent of the 1.4 million on active duty."
