Next major shift in College Football
So it's official, Texas A&M to the SEC. ESPN bottom line said Florida State, Clemson, and Missouri may follow.
These moves would be great for the SEC...makes the rivalry FSU and Florida a conference rivalry along with Arkansas and A&M, and lastly Clemson and South Carolina.
Big 12 is falling apart. Only relevant teams in that conference now are Oklahoma and Texas, the rest of that conference is mediocre at best. Those two teams are what keeps the Big 12 a better conference at the moment than the Big East. The fall of the Big 12 IMO is inevitable. The Big 12 may no long exist in the very near future.
Other rumors are that Virginia Tech and the SEC MIGHT be a possibility but thats according to a friend and when VT officials were asked about it they denied it.
This is also more bad news for the Big East. I believe if FSU and Clemson were to follow A&M to the SEC then I think the ACC would raid the Big East and possibly even look at ECU.
Also now since the Big 12 is down to nine teams, its a possibility that the Big 12 could look towards schools like Louisville, BYU and Houston.

Re: Next major shift in College Football
I always said that Texas' TV contract would make for an unhealthy conference. I thought it would be a few more years before the now Big 9 falls apart but I guess I'm wrong. Funny how having 8 or 9 members in your conference these days means your conference is on its deathbead...

Of course FSU's prez is denying this, I used to be against FSU going to the SEC. But now I kinda want to see them there, sure beats having to play Carolina and Duke in bball.ODUalum11 wrote:So it's official, Texas A&M to the SEC. Re: Next major shift in College Football
The fall of the Big 12 would be bad news for Texas since they are now launching their own television network this fall. According to Doug Gottlieb, Texas wants the Big 12 (now Big 9) to stay intact because if it doesn't Texas wouldn't be able to bring their television network along with them to another conference like the Big 10 or the Pac-12. Now since the SEC is at 13 its probably inevitable they add a 14th team. Mike Silve, the SEC commish, has been reported that he wouldn't want to add another team from a state where there is already a SEC member but it looks like he might have to do that because Clemson, Florida State are the best fit for a move to the SEC.
I think the fall of the Big East is definitely inevitable.

And it would make FSU and UF a conference rivalry and would add more bragging rights. Also, not at this very moment it will have an impact but in the near future the one FCS team that might be affected by this whole realignment is Villanova. If the ACC ends up having to raid the Big East again, the Big East might really push for Villanova to join the league.tampajag wrote:Of course FSU's prez is denying this, I used to be against FSU going to the SEC. Re: Next major shift in College Football
Not so sure Houston will get the call, although it is a possibility. They don't need the Houston market because UT already has that and do they want a 32K stadium when the other schools far exceed that? They don't have the t-shirt fans, and hanger ons that UT does, even when they're winning.
I went to our game against UH last year and stayed with a friend, who lives there, who went to UH. She is 64 and had not been to a UH football game since she graduated.... but attends pro soccer games there, religiously.
The only way I see them being viable is if they can get their games in Reliant to accommodate the Big IX crowds and guarantee a gate take UT wants

With Texas getting their own television network, the Big IX wouldn't need another team in the state of texas but with the current situation they might have no choice but to add Houston just to stay afloat. They have 9 teams so they can definitely live with having that many teams but they would benefit adding a tenth team IMO. You just added an argument for why Houston doesn't fit, there is also an argument for BYU as well. Which of the three teams they mention leaves Loiusville.CatMom wrote:Not so sure Houston will get the call, although it is a possibility. If the Big East gets raided by the ACC... the Big East will lose a whole lot of stature... and probably won't keep its BCS auto-bid.
Would still be a good move for Villanova... but, not nearly as great.

yeah, when Miami, Tech, and Boston College were still part of the conference.DJH wrote:Did the Big East have stature to begin with?...
Sky, any move to the FBS is a great move and TJ I do believe Nova's stadium is an issue.

Re: Next major shift in College Football
When Miami was there they ran the leauge, winning it 9 times out of the 14 years they were there. Every year they won it they either lost one game or went undefeated. They had the stature not the league. Kind of like when FSU joined the ACC.ODUalum11 wrote:yeah, when Miami, Tech, and Boston College were still part of the conference.DJH wrote:Did the Big East have stature to begin with?...

regardless they still had that one marquee school that made them relevant. Which is what I'm guessing they hope for when TCU joins. Also didn't Tech make it to the National Championship one year. I believe they lost to FSU right?tampajag wrote:When Miami was there they ran the leauge, winning it 9 times out of the 14 years they were there. "We realize if we do this, we have to have the 14th," the SEC official said. "No name has been thrown out. This thing is much slower out of the chute than the media and blogs have made it."

yes they did when Mike Vick was a RS-Freshman. I don't know if you were following when they joined the Big East but most looked at that league as a joke even with Miami crushing them. It wasn't until 1998-1999 they Va Tech, WVU, and Syracuse closed the gap. But I do see your point.ODUalum11 wrote:regardless they still had that one marquee school that made them relevant. Yeah, exactly. The point is that the Big East hasn't had a team in the national championship since those 3 left while I believe every other BCS conference has had at least 1 with of course the exception of the ACC.tampajag wrote:yes they did when Mike Vick was a RS-Freshman. Vandy's Dudley Stadium seats about 40,000 which is about the standard I believe for FBS but by SEC standards it is very small.DKHardee wrote:I could be wrong but I don't think Vanderbilt's stadium is all that big and they are in the Elite SECCatMom wrote:Not so sure Houston will get the call, although it is a possibility. Mizzou is denying that it wants to leave the Big 12(9) but after they begged to join the Big 10, who would believe them? Oklahoma is dropping hints that if Mizzou leaves, Okie will bolt for the Pac-12 and probably try to take Okie St. with them. Texas destroyed the SWC and is well on its way to destroying the Big 12. Congrats Texas, you're 2 for 2.

Apparently OU, OSU, and 2 other B12 schools (probably Mizzou and one of the former North schools) asked to join the B10 but were told no due to not having a good enough academic reputation.

It did? Let me recap just to make sure....∞∞∞ wrote:I still remember last summer's fiasco that amounted to little. I'll believe everything when I see it.
Utah to the Pac-12
Nebraska to the Big 10
Colorado to the Pac-12
Boise State to the MWC
TCU to the Big East
BYU to independant
To me thats a good amount of realignment and I think a lot viewed that as just the beginning and we're starting to see it. TAMU's move could lead to one big mess in college football.
