Mountaineers working to peak again

Mountaineers working to peak again

Feelings of disappointment and a need for redemption aren't typical of most college football teams coming off a 10-win season, but at Appalachian State, the Mountaineers have proven to be anything but ordinary.

At a program that seeks its unprecedented seventh straight Southern Conference championship this season and looks to extend its run of seasons with double-digit victories to seven straight, there's a sense of urgency that seems misplaced.

But coach Jerry Moore likes it.

"Our team, our staff feel that all of us are on a mission," Moore said.

....

good article - notes the "shift to a 3-4 defense has been in the works for a few years" and "front seven players who are perfectly suited for the defense, led by three athletic linemen who all weigh 300 pounds or more - freshman William Corbin (6-foot-6, 300) and seniors Dan Wylie (6-1, 305) and Gordy Witte (6-6, 315)."

Go, Meat!
"But the damned and the guiltiest among you are the men who had the capacity to know, yet chose to blank out reality, the men who were willing to sell their intelligence into cynical servitude..."

Those are some big dlinemen :o... I'm no defensive strategists but I'm guessing that in the 3-4 the D line's job is to stand up and tie up the O line so speedy linebackers have a straight shot at the ball?

Yup pretty much.

Also bigger outside linebackers.

ASU is in a similar boat to UM. Disappointing season (although not as disappoining as UM's), switch to a 3-4 defense....chip on their shoulder...former struggling arch-rival rapidly improving.... should be interesting times in the SoCon this year....

I don't recall us being this meaty on the line before - I remember when we played the Griz a couple of years ago doing a comparison of the lines, and it seemed the Griz outweighed us by around 10-15 lbs on average. Bigger line, new D should indeed make for an interesting season.
