COACHING
John Settle returns to the NFL as the Panthers' running backs coach. Armed with three years of NFL coaching experience and 13 seasons on the college level, he comes to Carolina after handling the running backs from 2006-10 at Wisconsin, where the Badgers averaged more than 200 yards rushing per game in each of his last four years.

In 2010, Settle oversaw one of the most dynamic rushing attacks in Wisconsin history that included a productive trio of running backs. The Badgers set school records of 5.5 yards per attempt and 48 rushing touchdowns while rushing for 3,402 yards and 170 first downs.

Under Settle's guidance, Wisconsin nearly became the first team in NCAA history to have three different 1,000-yard rushers in the same season as James White totaled 1,052 yards, John Clay gained 1,012 and Montee Ball recorded 996. Both White and Clay earned second-team All-Big Ten recognition, and White was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

The previous year, Clay garnered Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors, leading the conference with 1,517 yards and 18 touchdowns. Wisconsin ranked first in the Big Ten in rushing in 2008 with an average of 211.2 yards per game, the team's best mark since 1999, and P.J. Hill surpassed 1,000 yards on the ground for the third consecutive season. Settle directed Hill to Big Ten Freshman of the Year accolades in 2006 after Hill paced the conference in rushing with 1,569 yards and 16 total touchdowns.

Prior to joining Wisconsin, Settle spent eight seasons as running backs coach at Fresno State from 1998-2005. During his tenure with the Bulldogs, Settle tutored six different 1,000-yard backs. He developed Derrick Ward and Dwayne Wright into NFL draft choices, with Ward being a seventh-round selection of the New York Jets in 2004 and Wright being a fourth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2007.

Settle began his NFL coaching career with the Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens from 1995-97. He worked in several capacities, serving as an offensive assistant and special teams quality control coach in addition to assisting in the weight room. Settle broke into coaching at his alma mater, Appalachian State, where he helped with running backs in 1994.

PLAYING AND PERSONAL
Signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Atlanta Falcons in 1987, Settle played in 46 games with 29 starts over six NFL seasons, spending four years with the Falcons from 1987-90 and two with the Washington Redskins from 1991-92. He accumulated 1,801 yards and 10 touchdowns on 439 carries and posted 118 catches for 1,039 yards and three touchdowns. Settle was voted to the Pro Bowl following the 1988 season when he became the first undrafted player since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 to rush for 1,000 yards. He also was a member of the Redskins' Super Bowl XXVI championship team.

A native of Reidsville, N.C., and product of Rockingham County High School, Settle played running back at Appalachian State from 1983-86. He finished his career as the school's all-time leading rusher with 4,409 yards and 43 touchdowns. As a senior, Settle compiled 1,661 yards and 20 touchdowns to capture Southern Conference Player of the Year. His number, 23, was retired by Appalachian State, and he was inducted into the school's hall of fame in 1994.

Settle and his wife, Karen, have three children: Jonathan, Leighton and Devynn. He graduated with a degree in criminal justice from Appalachian State.
