Chris Christie slams fearmongering over Sharia law

Post by dbackjon »

New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie defended his decision to nominate a Muslim judge to the state Superior Court against conservative critics who warned that the new judge will implement Sharia law. The notoriously blunt-spoken Christie calling their fears "crap" and "crazy."

The appointee, Sohail Mohammed, is an American attorney who offered legal aid to New Jersey residents who were suspected after the 9/11 terrorist attacks but were later found innocent of any crimes.

Opponents of Mohammed's nomination have issued warnings, with no evidence, that Christie's nominee, if approved, would base his rulings on Islamic law. Christie was having none of it.

"Sharia law has nothing to do with this at all. It's crazy. It's crazy," Christie said at a press conference Wednesday. "The guy's an American citizen who has been an admitted lawyer to practice in the state of New Jersey, swearing an oath to uphold the laws of New Jersey, the constitution of the state of New Jersey, and the Constitution of the United States of America . . . .This Sharia law business is crap. It's just crazy. And I'm tired of dealing with the crazies."

I agree with him.

Without evidence to support their case, they're just fear mongers flapping their gums.

Although the irony is that Christie has no problem with Christian Law being imposed - as he is anti-gay marriage.

The vast majority of Muslims here in the US support our system and its laws. There is no reason that they can't serve in government under the same Constitutional limits as any other qualified American citizen. A judge should apply the laws of the state and country with wisdom and common sense.

Fortunately, you are wrong on the majority, now.

All recent polls show a majority in favor of gay marriage.

Here is one.

The tide is turning. As the old generation die off, and as young people see it as no big deal, you are left with opposition only from the religious bigots. And they are not a majority

So we have one side in the culture war that buries their heads in the sand about radicalization of a small minority of American muslims and thinks white teenagers with two-way plane tickets are just as likely to be terrorists as young, foreign Arabs.

On the other side, people think being Muslim disqualifies you from being a judge even though the muslim population has higher average levels of education than the US population overall.

anti-gay marriage is a Christian law? I'm pretty sure there is a raft of different religions that all have what would be considered negative views of homosexuality. Hard to single one out in that regard.

Except that Christianity is the one that has the sway in this country.

Example - Prop H8 in California was almost exclusively funded by the Mormon and Catholic Churches.

Still, you can substitute pretty much any religion you want in place of Christianity in this country and the result is still the same.

Notice I said the majority of VOTERS. Your cherry picked recent polls may say one thing, but obviously the majority of VOTERS are saying otherwise.

States that have had a ballot inititiative for a constitutional amendment to keep marriage between a man and a woman that passed, the year it passed, and the percent it passed by:
Alabama (06’): 81%
Alaska (98’): 68%
Arizona (08’): 56%
California (08’): 52%
Colorado (06’): 56%
Florida (08’): 62%
Georgia (04’): 76%
Hawaii (98’): 69%
Idaho (06’): 63%
Kansas (05’): 70%
Kentucky (04‘): 75%
Louisiana (04’): 78%
Maine (09’): 53% (“People’s Veto”)
Michigan (04’): 59%
Mississippi: (04‘): 86%
Missouri: (04‘): 71%
Montana (04’): 67%
Nebraska (00’): 70%
Nevada (02’): 67%
North Dakota (04’): 73%
Ohio (04’): 62%
Oklahoma (04’): 76%
Oregon (04’): 57%
South Carolina (06‘): 78%
South Dakota (06’): 52%
Tennessee: (06‘): 81%
Texas (05‘): 76%
Utah (04‘): 66%
Virginia (06’): 57%
Wisconsin (06’): 59%

States that have had a ballot inititiative for a constitutional amendment to keep marriage between a man and a woman that didn't pass, the year it didn't pass, and the percent it didn't pass by:

ZERO

You might not like it, but dems the facts. So get back to me when a state amendment to keep marriage between a man and a woman goes before the voters and actually fails.

The majority opinion isn't always right...it's why humans end up repressing others. This is one of those cases.

Absolutely correct. Minnesota voters sent Keith Ellison to Congress, and he hasn't advocated Sharia law. I think Ellison's a typical Donk liberal, but he's not trying to turn the House into what passes for parliament in Tehran. :twocents:

I give Christie a lot of credit - he didn't back down or make some half-assed pander... he told them to STFU.

Could hurt him with the fringes of the base, but he has enough conk-cred to see him through this.

It's also kind of unfortunate that it's come to this in our politics that you have to defend a perfectly qualified candidate for a position from this kind of hysteria.

What do you mean "it's come to this"? There's always been biases and bigotry against members from countless groups and religions from even before we won our independence. Heck, JFK wasn't all that long ago that people were genuinely fearful that a Catholic in office would take orders directly from the Vatican. Romney's been dogged by people's bigotry of Mormonism for years now and certainly loses some votes because of it. If there's one thing that's really been a constant over all the years, it's that we are very good at being bigots.

Would be a pain in the ass at UD games though- everyone having to go through airport style security. Would take a couple of hours to get everyone into the stadium.
