Bishop says Catholic Church sex abuse inquiry 'not needed'

Post by dbackjon »

AN inquiry into suicides among victims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests and brothers in Victoria would achieve little, a Catholic bishop says.
Police investigating the case of convicted pedophile Brother Robert Best believe at least 26 victims of sexual abuse at schools in which he taught have committed suicide.

One of the investigating officers wants a parliamentary inquiry to investigate the deaths.

"If it helps the victims I'd be more than happy for it to go ahead," Bishop of Ballarat Peter Connors told AAP.

"I don't think they'll learn very much more ... I'm convinced we've done the best we can in more recent years."

But Bishop Connors on Tuesday said not even revelations from Detective Sergeant Kevin Carson that 26 young men had killed themselves after being abused by priests and brothers in Ballarat convinced him that more would be learnt from an inquiry.

"I think we've learnt a lot of things about what is appropriate behaviour and what's not appropriate behaviour," Bishop Connors said.

"I think people are very well informed nowadays as to what's inappropriate approaches from a male."

While conceding the abuse of children was wrong, he said that in the past it had not always been clear to everyone what was appropriate and inappropriate behaviour.

The headline writers gave away their bias here when they put quotes around words that the bishop never said.

He actually said he is all for the investigation if they think it will help the victims, but he doesn't think the investigation will reveal anything more than what is already known. How can this paper put quotes around words that the bishop never spoke?

Quotation marks or inverted commas (informally referred to as quotes or speech marks)[1] are punctuation marks at the beginning and end of a quotation, direct speech, literal title, or name. Quotation marks can also be used to indicate a different meaning of a word or phrase than the one typically associated with it, and are often used to express irony. Quotation marks are sometimes used to provide emphasis in lieu of other typographic means,

That's terrific, but 99% of the people who read that headline won't look up the fucking definition in Websters. They'll just assume the bishop said it. Which is misleading as HELL.

Really?

I learned the meaning and use of quotation marks/inverted commas in about 5th grade.

Didn't realize it was a difficult concept.

Or, we could stop deflecting the discussion onto the correct use of puncuation and talk about the blood of 26 abuse victims that's on the hands of this serial pedophile, and what a tragedy it is that he still has a job and isn't in prison. Which is what I take the referenced article to be about, and I'm also sure was the intent of the post.

Oh. So you recited that from memory?    I forgot, you're the Mensa guy.

Doesn't change the fact that the paper obviously had an agenda. Which I'm sure you're fine with.

Oh. So you recited that from memory?
for the most part, yes.

"agenda"?

like what?

how is it an "agenda" to report that there are 26 dead abuse victims and that the bishop doesn't feel there's anything to be gained by an investigation?

Doesn't sound like an "agenda" to me at all, just a report on the news story of the day

It would be correct to call it an "agenda" if there was mis-representation of the facts or outright un-truths reported as factual in the story.

So far, no-one has disputed any of the facts contained in the story.

If you can do so, by all means fire away.

OK...........

so that the discussion can turn to focus on the 26 abuse victims, here's an "agenda" free form of the story

The Headline:
Paedophile priest inquiry would achieve little, says Australian bishop

Hey, dumb, dumb, when quotes are used after the word "says," the marks signify that the words within quotes are the words spoken by the speaker.

Did you learn that in the 5th grade? And the improper use of quotations in this case is completely relevant, because the headline implies an indifference on the part of the speaker that was not supported by his actual words.

I don't really get the gist of this article. The two guys responsible for this abuse have been arrested, tried, and convicted. They were both evil, sick, disgusting individuals who are now paying for their crimes. The system, from the judicial standpoint, has worked in this case. If other abuse cases went like this with the guilty being caught and punished, there wouldn't be quite the uproar there has been.

I don't get why you're emphasizing this since it's basically talking about homosexuality. Yes, I know. The "politically correct" thing to do is to call it pedophilia. But it's homosexuality.
