So, what should ex-cons do for the rest of their lives if no one will hire them? You should give them a job working for you. You can welcome them into your home until they get back on their feet. Not saying I agree with the legislation, but it's not hard to see why there are so many repeat and habitual offenders in the system.LeadBolt wrote:You should give them a job working for you. Perhaps the SF supervisors should create a municipal jobs and housing program for x-cons to get them back on the right track, rather than legislating that others in the private sector do so. I'm sure they have some public works that need more attention.Grizalltheway wrote:Not saying I agree with the legislation, but it's not hard to see why there are so many repeat and habitual offenders in the system.LeadBolt wrote:

Re: SanFran has lost it: Ex Cons to be a Protected Class
I know an ex-con - killed 2 girls while driving under the influence of nitrous oxide (whippets) back in the 80's in Delaware (interesting, yet obviously tragic, case) - smart guy who made a catastrophically bad mistake and paid dearly for it (though not nearly as dearly as the victims and their families). He was able to find gainful employment in a low level role in the banking industry (yeah yeah yeah) through connections and education, but will never be able to advance in his career due to his record. And that's pretty much as it should be.
A criminal's debt to society is only partially paid when they serve their time - they also need to work hard to gain back society's trust, and probably will never be able to make it all the way back. Society should provide them the necessary training, counseling, tools, and supervision, but the onus is on the convict to prove their worth. And society should not be forced to issue a blanket welcoming mat to them, but evaluate on a case by case basis, because for all the grief the criminal is forced to deal with, 9 times out of 10 their victims have far more grief to deal with.

Exactly. The vast majority of criminals can be productive members of society if given a little support. The cost of said support is but a minute fraction of what we pay to incarcerate and dehumanize them.
Thanks to fucks like AZ, Tbagger, Hogan and racists like DJH, we're locking everyone up, villifying them and spending a fortune.

What if your kid made a mistake and killed someone while driving drunk? You would advocate for his or her death?

That sounds all fine and dandy, and is a good idea in theory, but the reality is that the vast majority of criminals will never be productive members of society.D1B wrote:Grizalltheway wrote:

To try and mandate a law that employers are not allowed to ask if one is a freaking criminal is asinine. May as well create a law where employers are not even allowed to interview people. You will just have to put your name in a hat, and they will have to hire you, because you are surely going to be a good person and a great employee, so why even bother interviewing them to find out?

Its pretty simple, if I have to choose between a felon and a non-felon to employ for my company, I am choosing the non-felon. Wouldn't you?

A lot of arguing about nothing here - most employers do background checks anyway, so the application form doesn't need to indicate whether they are a felon or not - the background check should show it anyway.

Actually, the "dance" was precipitated by a local code enforcement County employee who'd applied for one of my apartments. Guy was a wife beater, recently divorced, who provided false information on his application. When advised his application was being rejected, he filed a discrimination complaint claiming he was rejected because he had children who would be visiting. Despite tons of factual info to the contrary, the CA Dept of Fair Housing atty said he'd make it go away for $14k ($5k for complainant, $9k for the State), otherwise it'd cost another $21 to go to a hearing: Total hit was $24k.D1B wrote:Tdawg, you've gotten your ass kicked so bad by hippies that you have footprints in your shit.travelinman67 wrote:The SF Human Rights Commission should be disbanded.
