NAU's Class of 2009 loaded with talent

Post by dbackjon »

NAU football coach Jerome Souers will only lose 10 players to graduation this school year, so he wasn't looking for a big recruiting class.

One year after signing 23 freshmen, Souers and the Lumberjacks signed just 14 players on national signing day Wednesday. "We didn't have a big senior class last year and with what we added with mid-year transfers already, we didn't need a very big class," Souers said. "Still, this class is very talented and will have a big impact on our program in the future. There aren't a lot of players, but there's a lot of talent."

Souers and his coaching staff didn't have to go far to do their recruiting this year as 11 of the 14 players hail from Arizona.

"It was a tremendous year for the availability of in- state products. There's a ton of talent throughout the state this year," Souers said. "Our approach is the same every year. We start in Arizona and go from there. We're not only looking for great athletes, we're looking for players that will achieve academic excellence as well.

I can only imagine how many kids NAU must look at, with Phoenix being so close. Is Phoenix the closest, and biggest city near a Big Sky school?

Well, PSU is IN Portland, and Weber is basically in SLC. Sac State is in Sacramento....UNC is a lot closer to Denver than NAU is to Phoenix. And UM is just a hop/skip/jump from Butte. :D :D :D

Man, Anaconda sure churns out some players.
