Whats that you say...Norway passed some of the most draconian gun laws in Europe back in 2009 with the claim that the government is prepared to protect its citizens???

How's that working?????
Pretty good, statistically. Now we need to start banning religion, especially christianity, islam and judaism.

Demographics is probably the biggest of several factors.

Norway intentional homicide rate per 100k avg for decade close to .90. Norway 90 some percent (94?) white.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co ... icide_rate" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

US, 96'-09' state rankings by murder rate, states with 90=% white population:
50. New Hampshire: .80, 93.9% white.
48, Vermont: 1.1, 95.3% white
48. Iowa: 1.1, 91.3 % white
44. North Dakota: 1.5, 90% white
42. Maine: 2.0, 95.2% white
38. Wyoming: 2.5, 90.7% white (tied with WI)
22. WV 4.6, 93.9% (tied with DE) (still below the national avg of 5.0). WV obviously the outlier here.

19 of the 24 states with the percent of the population over 80% white showed up in the bottom 25 in the murder rate (exceptions being Ohio, Indiana, WV, Pennsylvania, and Missouri, and only 2 of them, PA and MO, were above the national avg of 5.0).

Demographic breakdown by state, about 1/3rd way down, can adjust rankings for a specified race:

Its not politically correct to say, but it appears demographics in terms of race has a lot to do with the murder rate in the US and is a major factor (but not the only one of course) in explaining the difference between the US and Norway's rate.

I'm not saying I agree with the conclusion drawn from the stats....but they do make a compelling argument.

I was going to say to take the murders committed with illegal guns/gang crimes out of America's gun crime rates and you'll get very different numbers.

Poverty and education levels might have something to with it. That would explain WV. countries with a high level of income equality like Norway have lower crime rates. Happy, smart people tend to not be killers - regardless of race.

Approx 67% of murders in the U.S. are gun related. In some of the states with lower numbers, the gun rate is lower as in NH with 4 of 10 murders being gun related.

I would need a whole lot more convincing data to believe blacks are predisposed to violence/gun crimes/murder/etc.

A huge, outlandish claim needs huge, overwhelming data and evidence to back it up. There are MANY factors that can account for those states leading the gun crime/violent crime stats. Poverty, employment, etc.

And, you accuse me of deflecting. You STILL haven't answered why you believe Norway's violent crime rate is so much lower than ours.

Is it because there are fewer black people in Norway? :? (Note: I'm not putting words in your mouth. I'm trying to clarify whether you believe this or not). This seems to be why you believe different areas in the US have higher instances of gun violence.

Again, you refuse to say "yes" or "no" when asked this question on race... so, I can't help but assume you think black people are predisposed to violence. I hope that isn't the case... but, please tell us where you stand.

Certainly would be a bit unsettling if you and BDK were espousing racist sentiments in a thread about a white supremacist nutcase that just killed close to 100 people.... :?

This type of data is well known in the anthropological literature; however, the underlying cause is not race but homogeneity of race and culture. The explanation goes something like this: the majority of human existence and evolution occurred within small tribes or clans; outside clans and tribes were often overtly hostile. Some nifty little experiments were done where photographs of people in various seemingly threatening poses (some looking like others not looking like the research participant), people were more likely to question the motives and react negatively to people that don't look like them.

There's actually something to the idea that other ethnicities are more difficult to recognize and discriminate than your own; this is a simple evolutionary response. Of course, culture in the U.S. also plays a facto: the urbanization and anonymity in cities, the acceptance and romantization of guns and war, etc.

The same ideas have been applied to social services... countries with homogeneity of race and culture are more likely to accept socialization. Of course, once again, many factors come into play.

Lighten up Francis, I was exaggerating.

The government should though quit promoting religion and eliminate its tax exempt status. MOF, like with cigarettes, the government should require mandatory warning signs outside of churches to warn shitheads like you what they're getting into.

Funny, the western world flourished both culturally and intellectually, when mandatory religion was cast aside, and the most oppressive and violent and intolerant countries are the most religious.
