your team's media coverage

Post by tampajag »

As we approach the upcoming season, I was wondering how much coverage your favorite team gets from the local media (newspaper, tv, and radio). For the sake of this thread we'll also include game broadcasts. On a scale of 1 -10 please.
For Southern:
newspaper - 8 (only because LSU is also in Baton Rouge and they get the bulk of the coverage)
tv - 8 (same as newspaper coverage, but they do a great job of making preseason specials and covering game action. Southern's home games are broadcast on tape delay basis on Sundays by Cox Sports TV)
radio - 6 (getting much air time on sports talk shows is tough especially during the season, the Jaguar Journal is a pretty good show that has grown over the years.)
here's my only gripe, our radio broadcast sucks ass, the announcers are too concerned with other **** than what's going on in the game. I can only listen to a little of the game to avoid pulling my hair out.

JMU is in a small town (45,000) with its own newspaper so JMU sports dominate that newspaper. The Richmond (capital 3 hrs away) Times Dispath refuses to report on anything related to JMU unless it's bad in the face of a large alum base in Richmond. The Washington Post covers U Maryland and Virginia Tech and any other school getting print is spotty...

Since JMU contracted to play WVU in DC there have been spots on local DC radio discussing JMU...

10 yrs ago JMU was 12,000 students, now that JMU is > 20,000 students and growing coverage is slowly catching up.

MSU is well covered by the local paper which includes the sports writers blog with audio interviews, also get pretty good coverage in several other papers across the state.

All games are televised, most on a statewide TV network in HD, a couple per year are on regional sports channel Altitude, the state network does a better production though. The state network also does a weekly coaches show. The most difficult game to watch is usually the FBS game but it is usually aired on some satellite network

Radio network is about 20 stations and includes Cat Chat a weekly show on Wed night with coaches and players. The radio announcers are from Learfield Sports the company hired by MSU and they do a good job.

All in all it would be difficult to find any FCS team that has better overall media coverage.

Considering that Hampton and Norfolk State are in the surrounding area plus Virginia Tech getting support throughout the entire state of Virginia I'd say ODU gets excellent media coverage. The Virginian Pilot newspaper has their own sports page that covers nothing but ODU Football at odublitz.com, also Wilder has his own weekly show on Friday nights I believe on WAVY Television Station (FOX affiliate in Hampton Roads). And obviously ODUsports.com does an excellent job of covering the Football team as well with daily recaps of practices during the preseason and spring football.

Liberty pretty much is the big team in Lynchburg at the FCS level. Up til a few years ago (I think 2006) we didnt get a ton of athletic coverage. Then we got a dedicated Liberty reporter and the coverage has gotten a lot better. All of Liberty's home athletics contests are carried on The Liberty Channel (which is increasing its coverage footprint steadily) as well as select games on MASN. WSET (the local ABC affiliate) probably does the best of the local tv outlets at covering LU sports. Radio coverage extends all over VA and into some parts of Northern North Carolina.

Newspaper coverage is great, Fargo is home to the state's largest paper and for football games they'll send the beat reporter and the sports editor to cover the games. For playoff games they sent three reporters to a few games. They'll have a page or two devoted to Bison football on Saturday and Sunday.

The beat reporter also combines with a TV sports anchor on a media blog which is really good, they've also started doing video blogs together. The coverage that the beat reporter and TV anchor provide on football recruiting is phenomenal.

A few NDSU grads have also put together Bison Illustrated, which is a magazine that has a lot of feature stories about student athletes, coaches, fans etc. Here is the link http://www.bisonillustrated.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; When it comes to print NDSU might have the best coverage in the FCS.

Radio coverage is handled by NDSU, the radio network includes 14 stations and stretches into parts of 4 states and Manitoba. They have a weekly coaches show where Bohl will answer any question, the local sports show also probably gives NDSU football the bulk of its coverage.

TV coverage is solid but lacking about compared to print and radio, most of the games are on TV. Some are on a local cable outlet and some are on statewide TV(NBC ND). Like radio, NDSU handles it in house. All of the TV stations give the team solid coverage, one station really does an outstanding job(WDAY ABC). Their sports anchor is the guy who combines with our beat reporter on a media blog, he is always the first guy to break news on a recruit and he travels to pretty much every game and does a postgame recap.

We may not have the best FCS media coverage, but our media coverage is FAR SUPERIOR than that of Akron and Kent State.

TV Coverage: MyYTV broadcasts all YSU home football games at 10:00pm on game nights.
Radio Coverage: 570 WKBN broadcasts our football games. 570 easily has the most powerful signal in Youngstown. I listened to 570 down in Columbus after the YSU-OSU game 3 years ago. It can be heard in Pittsburgh and Cleveland as well.
Newspaper Coverage: The Youngstown Vindicator during spring practice and every weekday of the fall have front-page stories on Youngstown State in the newspaper. Coverage in the Warren Tribune-Chronicle is solid as well, but not as good as the Vindicator's coverage.
TV Recap Show: 21 WFMJ has Penguin Gameday each Wednesday Night. In years past, SportsTime Ohio broadcast Penguin Gameday as well to its millions of viewers.

Overall, we have unbelievable coverage. Akron and Kent get 0 TV coverage as their TV coverage comes from Cleveland, where they could careless about their God awful football teams. Youngstown has 21 NBC, 27 CBS, 33 ABC, and 19 FOX that have tremendous gameday coverage of our games.

I would rate YSU's coverage a solid A. Much of this is due to our success in the 1990s.

I forgot, six of JMU's 2011 games are on TV covering the mid-atlantic region. The package that the CAA has is decent. Most of the time the games come across as good quality but occassionally the stadium/announcers are brutal and don't help the fcs image. JMU/ODU/DE & maybe W&M games look good on the tube...size/lighting.

TV Coverage: Cox Sports TV shows SU home football games at 2:00pm on Sundays and 7:00 pm. TV stations: WBRZ(ABC), WVLA(NBC) and WFBS(CBS) offer highlights and news coverage.
Radio Coverage: Games are broadcast on Q106.5. The Jaguar Journal can be heard on Saturday at 8-10 am and Wednesday 6-7pm on 104.5 FM. WSKR-FM 1210 also offer
Newspaper Coverage: The Baton Rouge Advocate covers Southern, the Jags have their own beat writer and blog. The Southern Digest is the Southern student paper it is decent. Times-Picayune (New Orleans), The Shreveport Times, and Lafayette Daily Advertiser offer coverage.
TV Recap Show: Cox Sports TV airs the Stump Mitchell show on Mondays at 9 PM.

Our team may not be very good, but I can't really complain about our coverage. Especially being in the same city as LSU who has a hold on coverage throughout the state.

compares quite well to how NDSU games are taped...the quality of the camera SUCKS and reminds me of the high school games I would watch on TV for the state championship...then again the lighting at the Fargodome SUCKS but hopefully with the new upgrades it'll be a little better this year.

Shitty.

UNI has a newspaper in the Cedar Valley area, and even that paper is more dedicated to Iowa and Iowa State.

TV, sucks. Programs would rather cover a shitty ISU team than a good UNI team. UNI has its own "Panther Sports Network" that airs football, volleyball, and basketball games...however, the announcer for those games is horrible and a Hawkeye apologists and finds any reasons to bring the Hawkeyes into the broadcast any time he can.

Radio is pretty good. UNI has a nightly radio show with out play by play guy for football and basketball (did baseball while we had it too). Reactions about the guy are very mixed, as are reactions to the show. It has a heavy UNI emphasis, but during football season he spends an entire show on high school sports, and then typically about a total of a day's show (or more) talking about Iowa and Iowa State. Everyone of UNI's football and basketball games are on the radio, and most WB basketball games are as well.

TV recap is pretty good as well. Panther Sports Talk is a weekly show that focuses only on UNI (and that god we need something like that). Host is a pretty good UNI guy. Not the best production, but considering the budget (which is probably about 10 bucks) pretty quality show. http://www.panthersportstalk.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Same for us. Word is the Sac Bee just canned a lot of folks and one of the people gone was a reporter who would run a decent article on the Hornets from time to time. We did have a couple of games televised on the regional Comcast sports channel last year but other than that, there is little media coverage to speak of. Of course until recently there wasn't much reason to cover Hornet sports anyways...

The one thing with Liberty is that in VA the fans are for the most part UVA and VT fans...at least in this part of the state, so we do often have to compete with them when it comes to coverage.

App State:
newspaper - B Watauga Democrat and App Trail in Winston Salem Journal good coverage. Occasional coverage in other NC papers.

tv - F. PBS. need I say more?

radio - B. I don't listen to much talk radio. Don't think we get all that much coverage. But, our radio crew is top notch. I'm a Tennessee fan as well... and our radio guys put their's to shame.

Correct. The Bee, when they bother to cover local colleges at all, have been CLEARLY a pro-UCFE paper. But even THAT has been scant lately as they would rather kiss up to the Bay Area. As far as TV goes, the local stations barely deign to show a couple of highlights. Of course, this is skewed somewhat by the fact that CBS-13 has NO sports anchor at all. The radio coverage is of limited power, so it's hard to get it more than about ten minutes or so away from the stadium. An actual TV game is ONLY under the restricted terms SD mentions, and even then it's only an afterthought after the punks in the Bay Area.

But this isn't limited to Sac. I'm fortunate if my local Lodi News-Sentinel will give even a paragraph to Hornet football in a roundup article (they won't even touch other sports). They give the same treatment to UOP, even though they have some sort of article exchange program with The Record. They'd rather grab an AP story about Cal/Stanford, as if they were the be-all and end-all of college sports.

All 11 of Liberty's games will be on TV this year. I'd have to give TV at least an A-. The only think keeping it from A+ is not much in the way of HD and just a regional/online TV station. Can't complain though for an FCS team.

Also all of our basketball games will be on TV as well, both home and away.

Turns out the beat writter for UNI, who has done a terrible job lately of covering big UNI news (i.e. UNI's MBB coach interviewing for the TAMU job, a recent basketball signee that he was 2 days late with the news on, among other things) has left the position. He has taken a job for FSNorth and FSWisconsin.....makes sense why he has slacked hard core. He has been looking for other jobs and slow clocking the shit out of his last job

For Portland State, coverage still sucks, but it is getting better from just five years ago. The Portland Oregonian will now carry PSU news, but kind of as an afterthought, after the Ducks and Beavers get theirs. We still have our games carried on one station, but it is pretty powerful and not on the Spanish or Christian stations. Coach Burton does appear on Mondays for about 15 minutes on the big all sports radio station (home of both the Ducks and the Blazers) talking about Viking football. Comcast will carry TV coverage of Viking games, provided that someone else has the coverage as well (Montana, Montana State or Altitude) and that it does not interfere with Duck or Beaver coverage. We also have our own tab on Oregon Live.

Even just five years ago, we did not have this so coverage is improving.
