I recommend using the option for watching the video on youtube. Apparently this kind of thing has been going on with respect to cab drivers all over the country for some time. To me this is awful. No way this should be happening anywhere. Absolutely disgusting in a completely non partisan sense.

I feel the same way. SD only issues a certain amount of taxi permits. I am sure other large cities do as well.

Yes they do. That's one point made in the video. But this is wrong. If one person wants to offer someone a ride for a fee and the other person agrees to the arrangement they should be able to engage in the arrangement. Government, local or otherwise, shouldn't be interferring in that. There is no WAY government should be involved in limiting the number of cabs in a jurisdiction. Shouldn't be happening.SDHornet wrote:I feel the same way. SD only issues a certain amount of taxi permits. I am sure other large cities do as well.
The number of cabs will be limited by competition. If there are too many cabs some of them won't make it.
If government wants to impose rules to ensure that cab operators honestly deal with customers that is legitimate. But limiting entry is bogus and wrong.

I agree with JSO on this one, it's nonsensical. The government is (once again) trying to change something that doesn't need to be changed. It's a waste of time, money, and man-power. Let the drivers be and move on to the more important things plaguing the District of Columbia.

Well since cabs are driving on public streets they should have to adhere to a certain level of safety standards. Working blinkers, working tail and headlights, working seat belts, etc. As far as limiting the number of cabs…meh. I’ve never had issue getting a cab on busy nights/mornings and someone could make an argument about too many cabs affecting traffic. I do know the cabbies have to get a special permit to service the airport and only certain cab companies are allowed (the military sets certain standards the cabs and drivers have to meet) on base to drop off service men and women. So yeah, I guess I still don’t have an issue with some form of gov oversight/regulation if done properly (which seems to be the case here in SD).
