Democrats Threaten Obama...

Post by Col Hogan »

...DO NOT CUT ENTITLEMENTS!!!!
"If President Obama supports cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security benefits, that will be a defining moment of presidential weakness -- and put all Democrats facing re-election in 2012 at risk," said Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, a political advocacy group.
"Depending on what they decide to recommend, they may not have Democrats," said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-Rhode Island, of whether his Democratic colleagues would support a compromise. "I think it is a risky thing for the White House to basically take the bet that we can be presented with something at the last minute and we will go for it."

So GOP criticizes Obama, it's racism by definition, but if Donks do it, it's fine?

Sad, but not unexpected. If we're going to cut spending everything must be on the table. I gotta wonder if the Dems learned anything in the last election, it certainly doesn't look like it based on this.

Right on, brutha 86! Even thinking that "Deficit Chair"Joe Biden would ever consider cutting a thin dime from the public purse requires quite a stretch of imagination.

Haven't heard much about military spending cuts.

Put everything up on the block and lower tax rates while getting rid of tax code "specials", including personal (e.g., cap gains rates) and corporate (e.g., domestic production credits)

Both sides of the poltical aisle get hurt and we come out on top.

I need your urgent help. Republicans are gearing up enact their radical plan to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, women and people with disabilities.

At this moment, Speaker Boehner is crafting a deficit deal that would gut Medicare and Social Security, while slashing benefits for senior and the middle class in order to make sure he protects tax breaks for millionaires. This is unacceptable and House Democrats will not stand for this.

Not a bad start. I would cut spending as much as possible and then revise taxes to balance the budget. It could mean an increase or a decrease, but in theory we'd be spending what we need to and it would be paid for.

This is interesting because I thought the Democrats understood that raising the debt ceiling was paramount to keeping out economy "on track." According to the Treasurery Secretary, we face total economic collapse if we don't raise the debt ceiling. Now, the Democrats want to block raising the debt ceiling over an ideological position--where have I heard that before?

Just cut the Air Force.

The Marines and Navy can take up their slack.

We'll lose some decent golf, though.

You got that shit right.

Although politically a small rift with congressional Dems might not look all that bad heading into an election.

Troof. Then realign all tlhe MAW''s, close superflous bases, consolidate bases (Joint Base Charleston is a good example), ETC...Then you can transfer the pilots, mechanics and supporting staff amongst the Army/USMC/Navy. You could even go as far as eliminating the PJs and consolidating the elite forces so that they truly transcend the branches.

Saw Pelosi on the tube the other night. She should resign from Congress and become national spokeswoman for Super Poli-Grip.

And Rangel's "WWJD" riff? Isn't that old bird in jail yet?

What they are doing in Washington is trying to cut the deficit. The Republicans want the cuts to come completely from spending and almost entirely from entitlements, education and similar things. They wont budge on tax increases and ending oil tax breaks and so forth.

Democrats want the the cuts to be spread out and not just effect entitlements.

Offshore tax evasion over the next 10 years will cost the government $1 trillion, thats 25% of the savings Washington is trying to workout right now over the same time.

Republicans need to learn the voters wont tolerate a war on the poor that they are trying to orchestrate.

I didn't wanna start a new thread, but I was just reading about Ancient Athens and how their tax system worked. Like the US, they had a progressive tax, but unlike the US, they didn't feel like being taxed more was annoying or wrong. In fact, it was really prestigous to them because they thought of it as doing good for the city, and it also provided them a bit of glory and recognition.

For example, the upper class would pay 50% tax, but in return, they get public buildings, bridges, fountains, parks, venues and etc. named after them. And then I thought to myself if something as crazy as this would actually work in the US to cut our deficit. Have the upper class pay way more, but in return recognize them in various ways such as naming all the public works projects after them, having concerts/dinners in their honor, and etc. Maybe if we develop that "prestige" mindset Athenians had for helping their city, this plan is wacky enough to work for the US.

And I'm not just talking super rich famous people. Our average upper class citizens would be included in this too.

I may have already paid for the ODUSmitty Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Would I get free coffee halfway?

I'd settle for the ODUsmitty Center for HotWaywardChicksThatNeedaDaddy in downtown Norfolk.

But that's where I draw the line.

I mean it's not like anything else is working at this point, so I'm just throwing it out there. I just think it's facinating that's how the Athenian culture thought things though. They thought it was an honor to work hard and become rich not for themselves, but instead to help the city. And of course, the Athenian government thanked them kindly. I know there's a socialist element to it, but let's face it, the US is slowly becoming a Socialist Democracy and has been for years, so the idea might be worth a try to get out of debt.

Well I wouldn't say it won't happen, but people tend to fight change less when the change is slow and generational, and a shift to a Socialist Democracy is slow and generational. I mean, both capitalism and socialism are very flawed economic systems, but they do work pretty well when cycled. I think the US is at the point in its history where capitalism has run its course, so the socialist economic system begins to take over to satisfy the people and get the money flowing again. Eventually, probably not in our lifetimes, the flaws of socialism become apparent and the shift towards capitalism begins once again. Virtually no economic system ever stays the same and the US is no exception. If you think about it, stuff like the capitalist-socialist cycle are actually good for the long-term health of a nation. Yeah we might think socialism is taboo right now, but our grandchildren may be thinking the same of capitalism, and their grandchildren may be thinking the same of socialism, and so on.
