New census figures reveal that for the first time, the majority of babies born in the U.S. are now minorities - a change that could reshape the American social order.
Currently, non-Hispanic whites make up less than half of all children under 3. In 1990 that figure stood at 60%.
In 12 states - New York and New Jersey included - the white population among children younger than 5 is less than 50%, the figures showed.
Seven more states are expected to see a similar flip in "minority-majority" status in the next decade.
"We're moving toward an acknowledgment that we're living in a different world than the 1950s," said Laura Speer, coordinator of the Kids Count project in Baltimore. "It's clear the younger generation is very demographically different."
At the same time, whites make up the vast majority of older Americans, comprising 80% of people 65 or old. Whites also represent 73% of people ages 45-64.
The change has been most pronounced in states in the Southwest, where fast-growing Hispanic populations have turned the demographic on its head.

The Conks need to wake up and realize this. It ain't a My Three Sons, Father Knows Best America any longer. Our country is darker skinned and younger than they would prefer, but it's the new reality. Frankly, I welcome it.
