It's absurd that Mead doesn't believe Gore is a hypocrite. His vices (except for the masseuse molestation) and putative virtues are both related to his environmentalism. Hypocrisy and the belief that public virtue cancels private vice aren't mutually exclusive.

My favorite Gore image is one of him campaigning in rural New Hampshire while wearing a new, clean and perfectly pressed plaid flannel shirt. He was surrounded by a group of snickering rural mountain men whose plaid flannel shirts were considerably older, not clean and certainly not professionally pressed.

The best part is that Gore's typically expressionless face made it clear that he did not realize he was the butt of a joke.

Gore's grades were lower than any semester recorded on Bush's transcript from Yale. That was the year Gore's classmates remember him spending a notable amount of time in the Dunster House basement lounge shooting pool, watching television, eating hamburgers and occasionally smoking marijuana.

You can be a leading environmentalist and fail to pay all of your taxes. You can be a leading environmentalist and be unkind to your aged mother. You can be a leading environmentalist and squeeze the toothpaste tube from the middle, park in the handicapped spots at the mall or scribble angry marginal notes in library books.

But you cannot be a leading environmentalist who hopes to lead the general public into a long and difficult struggle for sacrifice and fundamental change if your own conduct is so flagrantly inconsistent with the green gospel you profess. If the heart of your message is that the peril of climate change is so imminent and so overwhelming that the entire political and social system of the world must change, now, you cannot fly on private jets. You cannot own multiple mansions. You cannot even become enormously rich investing in companies that will profit if the policies you advocate are put into place.

It is not enough to buy carbon offsets (aka “indulgences”) with your vast wealth, not enough to power your luxurious mansions with exotic low impact energy sources the average person could not afford, not enough to argue that you only needed the jet so that you could promote your earth-saving film.

You are asking billions of people, the overwhelming majority of whom lack many of the basic life amenities you take for granted, people who can’t afford Whole Foods environmentalism, to slash their meager living standards. You may well be right, and those changes may be necessary — the more shame on you that with your superior insight and knowledge you refuse to live a modest life. There’s a gospel hymn some people in Tennessee still sing that makes the point: “You can’t be a beacon if your light don’t shine.”

Interesting hypothetical there. I don't think Gore could have done any worse and if he doesn't invade Iraq we may be better off. We'll never know, but it tells you a lot about the state of things when our choices in 2000 and 2004 were Gore, Kerry and Bush.

Posted my observations on this before...but much of my distrust/disrespect of Al Gore's politics grew from his foreign trade skullduggery in Congress and the early years in the WH. Much of the China trade imbalance grew out of trade agreements signed off by Senator/VP Gore. I recall reading a State Dept. report on the '92 Nafta/WTO package of which Gore was a key architect...and was left aghast, wondering if Gore was a real-life "Manchurian Candidate" planted to disrupt the U.S. economy.

Few liberals know, and those that do cowardly refuse to acknowledge, that the bulk of Gore's foreign policies read as though they were drafted by the other country. There is NO DOUBT, that Gore is either consciously attempting to derail America's prosperity and and fiscal stability, or he is an epic idiot.

I thought they did. I liked McCain, although I liked him better in 2000. I thought Obama was a better choice than Gore, Kerry or Bush, granted the bar was low, but he was an improvement.
