Unfortunately, Georgia has fostered a society for almost 300 years that believes this kind of work isn't fit for white people.

That's actually not QUITE true lubey and you know it. Clay Eatin' Georgia white trash crackers have been doing exactly that kind of work for that long and we South Carolina gentleman have been mocking them for it.

I mean, I thought Georgia was a deep red state. Why does one of the more conservative states in the country still give out unemployment? It must be true what Glenn Beck says... socialists are truly everywhere these days.
Nice red herring....none of this changes the fact that this isn't an "immigration law" problem, but a "hiring illegal workers and skirting the law" problem, and they got caught with their pants down.

I didn't say all forms of unemployment. I said more than 26 weeks, as normally unemployment is only suppose to last a max of 26 weeks, very few workers have paid in enough in unemployment taxes to cover more than 26 weeks of unemployment, the state unemployment funds are tapped out, and the fed is having to pick up the tab for the up to 99 weeks.

As AZ alluded to, nothing wrong with cutting 11k people off the govt tit, if there are 11k pickin jobs right there.

I agree. There are plenty of able bodied people in GA on the welfare rolls and over 6 months unemployment for harvesting those crops.

There was also 80+ million less people in the US (about 227 million 80' Census vs about 309 million 2010) when Reagan entered office over 30 years ago, and a much lower level of illegal immigration.

Regardless, Reagan wasn't calling for open borders. Coming through DOORS (ie the POEs)- he meant coming in LEGALLY. Not over the walls (ie crossing the border illegally). Nice try though...

As accurate today as it was then. That regulation he speaks of is lifetime unemployment benefits, leaving no impetus to go out and actually FILL jobs that are available.

He was in favor of granting amnesty for those who entered illegally and contributed to society.

He was also in favor of the free movement of people and goods between the US, Mexico, and Canada.
Reagan himself was a dreamer, capable of imagining a world without trade barriers. In announcing his presidential candidacy in Nov. 1979, he had proposed a “North American accord” in which commerce & people would move freely across the borders of Canada & Mexico. This idea, largely overlooked or dismissed as a campaign gimmick in the US, rankled nationalist sensibilities in the neighboring nations. But Reagan was serious in his proposal. Though he traveled only once outside the North American continent during his first 57 years, he was neither insular nor isolationist. California has windows to the world in Asia, and Reagan thought of the US as a Pacific power as well as an Atlantic one. He also had a Californian’s consciousness of Mexico and an actor’s appreciation of Canadians, who are well-represented in the film community. The dream of a North American accord would drive the successful pursuit of a US-Canadian free trade agreement and a future-oriented “framework” trade agreement with Mexico

That's only recent US immigration policy. Hasn't been the case for very long. This country is predominantly made up of people whose ancestors came here UNINVITED.

True, minorities have always been resisted when they've immigrated in large numbers. Irish, Chinese, Jews, etc. But, that's no excuse to continue with the hate. :ohno:

jellybean's responses are funny until you realize he is serious.

It's been said before, people will work for less money if they aren't given money to sit at home. Sure, some will resort to crime...but the majority will go to work. Anyone remember those $8/per hour jobs in Arizona that everyone said no one would fill...and they got thousands of applications from educated people looking for work?

In jelly's world, the answer is to keep pouring money into a broken system of fraud and illegal actions. Let the lazy Americans sit and collect unemployment while letting in more illegal workers and anchor babies. The mega-agricultural businesses and crooked small farm families get to continue their illegal practices while taxes on legal hard working Americans go up to accomodate the extra unemployment and expenses for honest farmers - those who only hire legal workers, go up. Hey, but people get to pay less for their berries.

jelly wants the government to spend more stimulus money to jump start the economy...but jelly doesn't want people to have to work for that money. :dunce:

lol. no. the regulation he was speaking of in that quotation was that recommended by the Select Commission on Immigration and Refugee Policy in 1981 that suggested tightening immigration policy.

Notice there was no mention of things moving freely across the US borders. :thumb: ;)

He imagined arms flowing freely across Iranian borders, too.

There was only about 3 million illegals back then compared to at least 12 million now. Reagan agreed to it in exchange for tougher border enforcement and employer sanctions promised by Congress. In the end he got neither. He later called IRCA one of his biggest mistakes.

That's what liberals have said ad nauseum ever since Arizona brought up the original bill. Conservatives always claim "THEY'RE TAKING THE JOBS OF HARDWORKING AMERICANS." lol. There aren't any hardworking americans anymore.

It's like when Texas passed similar legislation... but, exempted housekeepers and such:

Wow...I can't believe I am about to say this but...this statement by jelly pretty much pwns anyone believing that simply "closing" the border will solve the immigration issue.

You won't find any US born citizens to work these jobs. Period. Agribusiness is fully dependent on cheap and mostly illegal labor for a very long time. Long hours day in and day out, sometimes deplorable temporary living conditions at the farms, many of the workers migrate hundred if not thousands of miles going from one farm to the next during peak harvest...yeah good fucking luck filling those jobs with people not from a migrant worker oriented background.

I also love the fact that some exemptions will have to be made to get this work done...and those exemptions will pretty much make this new law completely useless. This GA law has epic fail written all over it.

BS. Obviously you haven't bothered to read much of this thread. As has already been said by several people, you make able bodied people on welfare work these jobs to receive their welfare check and take away extended unemployment US citizens WOULD work these jobs if their 2 choices were either a. work these jobs or b. go homeless and starve.

Of course they won't work them or most other low skill jobs if they can sit on their ass at home and collect several hundred a week in welfare and/or unemployment.

Actually they would go with option c. steal food/property from someone else. Worst/best case scenario they get shot and die. Worst/best case scenario they are in jail and receiving free shelter and food.

For the record I never said welfare reform and illegal immigration shouldn’t get addressed. I feel that the issues are tied together and it would take some comprehensive reform to fix the problem. My opinion has always been such that no politicians have the balls to go for such a thing AND the economics of something like this will never work out. It’s much easier (and probably cheaper) to keep the status quo; if it wasn’t, something would have been done already.

Fine. If they choose option C they get shot (at least if they come into MY house) and then they're no longer a burden on society. :coffee:

btw: assuming that the vast majority would just resort to theivery is laughable.

No politician has the balls because it would potentially mean that the 13,000,000 people collecting unemployment wouldn't vote for them anymore because they turned off the spigot to the gravy train. Unemployment is like crack cocaine....why work when you get something for nothing?

As usual, SKfelchyfetti is playing without all the facts.

There are LEGAL ways for those farmers in GA to get their workers up from Mexico, and they know it. I issue both non-immigrant worker visas as well as E3 immigrant visas for nonprofessional workers. The problem is that when there is an enclave of Mexicans down the road, it is the easier path for a farmer to simply go down and hire them. We have laws in place that accomodate the farmers in need of nonskilled labor, and we have plenty of visas allocated for that purpose.

When the farmers start getting hit in the pocketbook they will do what they have to do, i.e: use the law to their advantage instead of letting their crops rot in the fields to make a statement.

BTW- one of the tobacco farmers I used to work for had a bus and he took it down to Mexico each spring and picked up his workforce. He paid for all their visas, provided housing for them on his farm, and when the season was over, he took them back to Mexico.

Not obeying the law is simply the lazy guy's way of doing things. Farming can be profitable but the farmers need to get in the habit of adjusting and adapting. Tobacco farmers in NC are experts at this. Maybe thhey can make an extra buck in GA teaching those guys down there about farm business management.

I know the open borders folks like SK are laughing at this, but there will be farmers who will figure this out.

I worked on my dad's hog farm and later digging graves and cutting grass while in college.

My point is that there are thousands of kids in Georgia sitting on their collective asses this summer in addition to all the unemployment and welfare recipients. The law did exactly what it is supposed to. Too bad they didn't go far enough in mandating work for welfare (and yes, drug testing as well) rules.

My point is that there are thousands of kids in Georgia sitting on their collective asses this summer in addition to all the unemployment and welfare recipients. The law did exactly what it is supposed to. Too bad they didn't go far enough in mandating work for welfare (and yes, drug testing as well) rules.
Ding, ding, ding!

As a pre-teen and teen, I bailed hay and worked on my grandfather's farm. We didn't sit in front of a TV all day expecting our parents or the government to toss us money.

jellybean and SDHornet are part of the problem...they are lazy thinkers making excuses for lazy people. :dunce:

AnalGlue, that's a nice reference. :dunce: Using poetry to condone illegal actions, very nice. I don't think that is what Emma Lazurus had in mind. Millions of immigrants from Europe came to America and became citizens. Millions have come from around the world and have become citizens. The message is true, but why should they have a free ride? Would you allow me, my 2 brothers, 2 sisters and parents to just mooch off of you and your family, indefinetly? Of course not. If you want to be here, BECOME A CITIZEN! I don't see the big problem here. I don't see the issue with this? You don't want to be a citizen, yet you want to take advantage of what we have? Get a Visa!

I know a lot of white people that worked on farms back in the 1920's all the way up to today. There are workers out there, you have to give them a push. We have to force accountability on these people. :twocents:

That being said, I will add this:

Our path to naturalized citizenship is ridiculously long and paved with government red tape. It needs to be addressed along with border control issues.
