Big Sky basketball sucks. Let's not try to act like many of the programs are world beaters compared to MSU

And no one cares about the other sports. I think MSU is good at rodeo or something though

edit: dammit, its hurting me sticking up for them. Where are all the MSU posters?

Probably on egriz...

Why is it that the best Kitty posters are over at eGriz and not here? Bay Area Cat is one of the good ones. He should be here to defend his team. He'd certainly do a better job of it than CA.

The Bobcat ladies are going to win another championship this year Silenoz. You'd think SH would be all over it being a ladies thing and all.

Has Weber ever won a National Championship in basketball SH ?

It really shows how much you know if you think some of those clowns that post on egriz are the best posters .

What are we supposed to be defending?

Green Cookie Monster wrote: Good post SDH and SUU. Sac is already paying through the azz to send the tennis team to Pocatello, Flagstaff and Bozeman et al. Which would be the same in sending the tennis team to Las Cruces, Moscow and San Marcos. Making a switch for Sac State is probably one of the easiest and most straight forward scenario's in WAC expansion.

Some problems: Perception, perception, perception. Coach Sperbeck of Sac State makes the highest salary for college coaches in the Sacramento region at $193,000/yr. The Cal-Davis coach makes $172,000/yr. This link was posted on the first page of the Sacramento Bee:

http://www.sacbee.com/2011/06/15/370272 ... letic.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And people are shittin a brick that he makes too much for a 'State' employee. Imagine what would happen if Sac State went FBS and had to pay the HC a minimum of $300,000/yr. or more, which is pennies compared to other FBS HC's. The cal-Davis scenario would be even more difficult and they are already behind in having to fund scholarships that are twice as much as a CSU scholarship. The perception is that since the state is broke, why are we funding college athletics and subsidizing their tuition. CP and Cal-Davis are too happy playing in the Big West and cost containment for olympic sports (nothing wrong with that) and I dont see them pulling out to join the WAC with higher FBS costs and no revenue sharing from the league.

The biggest hurdle for Sac State is politics and unfortunately we are ground zero in the universe for whackos, nut jobs and liberal activists who want funding for everything besides universities and athletics. Plus, the leadership at Sac State hasnt publicaly stated any interest in joining the WAC, which I don't understand. How can you fund raise for a growth period if you don't make the 200,000 Sac State alumni aware of your intentions?

Methinks the Sac State administration is biding their time to retirement and then will let the next people worry about this athletics issue.
:+1: Great post GCM. It's all about the $$$ and being non-AQ in FBS doesn't guarantee any revenue increases, especially in the WAC or SBC.

What a riot. Like so many others, CA tries to bully me, but it just doesn't work. Asking about Weber winning a hoops title, with the clear implication that MSU actually has. Well, that works if you accept a "title" decided by a poll done back in the '20s. Smooth move for a guy representing a school that has never won a D-I tournament game and hasn't even been to the Tournament since '96.

Bragging about a National Title would be like ODU fans bragging about a National Title at the D-2 level from the '70s. Nobody cares.

I never once put done WSU basketball accomplishments like you are doing with MSU. They have a great Bball program and MSU could be considered good. How many tourney games has Sac won and how many BSC titles in MBB have they won?
You still haven't answered why WSU and EWU are ready for the WAC and MSU isn't. I know it must hard to be considered one of the strangest posters along with Opie and I can also take the fact that you just hate MSU for some reason but c'mon man.

I'm not bragging about that old championship but it was all I could come up with at the time.

OK. I exaggerated a bit, CA. I guess I temporarily got you confused with Opie, AKA D1B Jr.

There are certain issues I've seen cited in other threads that are going to be an issue. More to the point, however, is your lack of baseball and softball teams, which will cause problems for jumping into leagues where that might be considered a "core sport." Of course, that's also going to be an issue for the Griz, but I suspect that they're better equipped to handle that. I don't have anything other than personal supposition to back that up, though.

PDX doesn't have baseball, but they at least have access to a baseball stadium so they wouldn't have the infrastructure costs the Montanas would. Plus, the fact that the Viks field softball already makes it less likely to be forced to operate on a barnstorming schedule so they can fit in the required games given the un-baseball-like weather that's common there. Great for football, not so much for baseball and softball.

Reasonable argument. That wasn't so hard was it. You didn't even say kittie. ;)

I don't exactly know the core sports are needed for the WAC but Idaho and Utah State don't play baseball . MSU would have to add a women's sport probably soccer or softball to cover title IX. UM is adding softball but they are in a hard spot because of the number of women on campus and,I believe, would have to add another women's sport to once again be title IX compliant. Personally I don't want to move to the WAC .

Given the typical weather in the state, soccer would make more sense than softball for MSU, assuming that one girls sport is all that's required. Soccer is generally played yearround regardless of weather (barring dangerous stuff like lightning and hail), while snow pretty much kills off the diamond sports unless one torques their schedule in the barnstorming direction. I'm not sure what your topography's like around Bozeman, but if you have a large lake or river within a reasonable distance, crew might be a good option. Sac has been pretty competitive with that, even against the likes of Cal.

You might also want to check out what club sports you already have. If you have a few that are successful, bumping them to varsity status might be a bit cheaper than starting one from scratch.

There are still a lot of delusional WACers that think they can land Montana and Montana St. or Sac St. or CP or UCD or PSU or UNT or ULL or Someone's Mother

I explained to them that all of the CSUs and UCs are set to take a $20 million cut from the state. Fresno St. will drop 20 schollies from who give a fuck sports to help cover the loss. So I'm still waiting for an answer on that board how any CA school can afford to add and maintain 22 more mens and another 22 womens schollies. I can't see any school laying off teachers and turning away students shelling out money to move up(figuratively BSky and WAC'12 look related to me) in fb.

They won't die, they have 9 schools and 7 for fb, they need an 8th by 2014. Lamar and SHSU are laying on the bed naked waiting to be taken. Plus UVU and CSUB still want in too.

It almost seems like the WAC would be best to try and get someone like Long Beach or UC Santa Barbara to add football.

I don't live in Southern Cali, but they have a noticeable void of DI football since the old Big West programs like Fullerton, Pacific, and CSULB all dropped football in the late 80s or whenever it was.

true, and USC is undergoing NCAA sanctions right now. I think a FCS program in Southern Cal would definitely be beneficial.

Northridge had actually developed into a pretty good program at the time they disbanded around 2000. Not sure why the state and that university couldn't see some value to being a quality FCS program, and the only one in that part of the country.

Not to get too far off topic but, how many DI football programs are there in CA? (FBS & FCS)

(for comparisons' sake TX has 16 - didn't count UTSA)

Not trying to make any point here. I'm just wondering

Just off the top of my head...

FBS - USC, UCLA, San Diego State, San Jose State, Stanford, Fresno State, Cal

FCS - Sac State, Cal Poly, San Diego, UC Davis

FWIW USD is non-schollie.
Also the LA area will never flock to FCS football. The only hope would be for a large school to have a large alumni turnout support the program. (LBSU for example.) :twocents:

This. And whenever I need a good laugh, I head over to the WAC board to read the latest "What about _____ being invited to the WAC" thread. I think those posters have looked at anyone with a pulse as a possible football playing member.
