No parents trying to push their ideas on us (they did try, but i was always quick to tell them who was paying which always shut them up), no unwanted invitees (i.e., rarely seen family members), no church, no suits/ties (no shoes for the men either), plenty of good food/booze; 52 people travelled to the Virgin Islands to attend our wedding party week. Almost every single one of them has said it was the best wedding they've ever been to, from their time at the hotel resort to the actual wedding on Magen's Bay to our reception. And every one of them that I've ever visited since has a picture from our wedding in their house. There's no doubt in my mind that if given the choice we would spend the same amount of money to do it all over again. :thumb:
If i'd been in a different financial position 20 years ago, I'd have done something similar. And by paying for it yourself, you're entitled to do whatever the fuck you want.

I was prepared to go to Vegas after week 3 with the Griz Goddess...we didn't and ended up getting married 7 months later. She now wishes we'd just continued on (we were already at the Grand Canyon) and done it. Your wedding sounds a LOT like the one my daughter has dreamed up in her head....with ME paying for it, of course. I'm encouraging her to elope. :coffee:
Really, being able to pay for it ourself changed everything and made the whole experience rather enjoyable. Even planning it was enjoyable and exciting. We took a 5 day 'recon' trip there 6 months in advance to pick out the hotel, reception site and our wedding planner, but finished ahead of schedule and spent the last 2 days just getting blasted throughout the islandw. The wedding planner was the kicker though, she took care of all the nitty-gritty stuff on the island that would have driven us crazy if we tried to do it state side. When I'm not in the Caribbean I have a very hard time dealing with 'island time'.

Traditional weddings are just impossibly complex - something will inevitably piss off the bride (not hard to do, given the stress), which totally sucks no matter who's paying the bill. Sounds like you guys had the right idea - I've already started giving my daughter Beaches/Sandals brochures (friggin' catalogs are what they are) for her to plan her wedding/elopement from (when she's old enough, in about 20 years).

Wedding planner, huh? Well, we're not all Matthew McConaughey-rich, like you bandl. Remember, most of us here are just angry, fat, cheeto-eatin' white guys who are pissed off that we're going to be in the minority soon and lashing out at people like dOpie because of it......

We ended up paying a lot of money for our wedding and didn't (and don't) regret a thing - it was a great party, the food was great, the cake was legendary and the honeymoon (two weeks in Hawaii on Kuai and at Kona on the Big Island) were great. We still look at the video every anniversary and even looked at the pictures just this past weekend. I wouldn't have spent a dime cheaper considering how happy I was with the outcome. :thumb:

Matthew McConaughey is not as good looking as me, so he probably would have ended up paying more for a wedding planner, but I understand what you're saying. In the end though her services only added up to about 4% of the total cost I believe.
