Just so you know...when you play the "race" card, you can mark the exact point where you KNOW you've lost the argument.

Could make an exception for those in the military (which is probably a minority) that have zero income tax liability.

I think a better idea would be make EVERYONE have some skin in the game. That would mean getting rid of EITC welfare payment, and for those 47% with currently no skin in the game, all of them above the poverty level should have to pay a small amount, even just 1% would at least mean they would have some skin in the game.

The US will never get out from under the mountain of debt we are in as long as close to half the population can continue to vote themselves more largesse with no consequences.
Maybe the folks behind the whole "only those who own property can vote" were on to something.

Cool - I get a vote! I have equity in my house. Those that don't - are they screwed? How much property does one need to qualify? I see a side business oportunity - buy up a few square miles of desert for a couple grand, then sell square foot parcels to the landless. Instant voters!! :thumb:

What skin are you referring to...

Congressional Budget Office data suggests that, at most, about 10 percent of all households pay no net federal taxes. The number 10 is obviously a lot smaller than 47.

The reason is that poor families generally pay more in payroll taxes than they receive through benefits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. It’s not just poor families for whom the payroll tax is a big deal, either. About three-quarters of all American households pay more in payroll taxes, which go toward Medicare and Social Security, than in income taxes."

FICA taxes isn't skin in the game. That's your retirement $ that the govt is taking and then giving back to you upon retirement with a shi**y return- you know, you get that FICA statement every year that shows what you'll be paid based on the date at which you retire and how much FICA $ that you have paid in that they're holding. Thats not skin in the game.

Same goes for medicare- thats $ for your health care upon retirement. Thats not skin in the game like income taxes are.

The bottom line is that a substantial majority of people in the United States carry way less than their share of the federal tax burden if "share" is defined as total federal expendistures or total federal tax receipts divided by the number of individuals or households. WAY less.

So it's a system where politicians can continually increase programs, etc., while the overwhelming majority of the population perceives no real increase in what it has to pay for those programs. For example: In 2005 dollars (inflation adjusted), households among the bottom 60% of income earners in 1979 paid about $5,000 per year on average in all federal taxes. In 2005, the average for that group was about $4,100.*

Meanwhile, the housholds in the top 10% of income earners paid about $51,000 on average in 2005 dollars in 1979 as compared to about $92,800 in 2005. It's not hard to see what's going on. Provide more and more "goodies" then just pass the increased cost on to "the rich." Those in the majority never personally "see" the consequences of the increasing cost but politicians can crow about all they did for them.

*All figures are rounded to the nearest $100 because the numbers are somewhat imprecise.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
