The federal income tax code is far too complex and, for self-employed individuals, a burden beyond what is reasonable. It is unconscionable that self-employed individuals have a "duty" to account to the federal government for all their revenue, expenses, etc. to the extent demanded by the tax code. My tax returns run in the neighborhood of about 40 pages every year. Ridiculous and unfair. And frankly, it is nobody's business what I make -- and that includes the federal government. I shouldn't have to tell the people working at the IRS how much money I make.

Get rid of the income tax and replace it with a national sales tax. Significantly reduces paperwork (and does away with personal paper work); does away with dishonesty which is rampant in the system through the under-reporting of income or the inflation of expenses/deductions; and will bring within the tax system people who make money illegally (drug dealers, prostitutes, organized crime) by taxing them on what they purchase. On the last point, is there any legitimate why reason those who make money illegally get, as an added bonus, a pass from federal taxation, when law abiding citizens pay based on what they lawfully earn?

There is no reason why, in this free nation, we have a tax system that people are afraid of.

From my experience in practice with clients, I have observed that the vast majority of clients who have incurred late-filing penalties from the IRS are intelligent persons who are organizational messes -- and seem to be afflicted with adult Attention Deficit Disorder. As such, the tax code/IRS penalty enforcement discriminates against those who suffer from a neuropsychiatric disorder. A national sales tax is a fairer, less burdensome method of taxatin.

There's a theory that A.D.D. is not a neuropsychiatric disorder, it might be an evolutionary character trait that rewards multi-tasking but became less successful once humans switched from hunting/gathering to single task oriented agriculture. My Latin teacher used to always tell teens with ADD in the sternest way (non-verbatim), "You don't have a disorder so stop acting like it. Your parents just raised you wrong." It always got them to focus and I've been sold on his theory since.
