We'll fly into Nashville, pick up son and wife and drive up to Knoxville. Already workikng on it.

As with Oregon and Iowa, the D will play well until the O's three-and-outs kill them with lopsided TOP.

But, the last time I went to a Griz away game, we lost! And, there isn't anything I like less than leaving the Missoula area!!!
When was the last away game you went to?

2008 National Championship game.

I got to go to a game a Neeland many years ago to see TN and GA play. WOW what an atmosphere. I do not think I have ever been in one place with that many people before or since.

Seriously though, I was raised in a Tarheel family and out of all the members of my family who went to college, am the only one who didn't attend UNC for at least a couple of years. So i was raised to bleed carolina blue. Some of my fondest family memories growing up are setting around watching Dean & the boys play basketball. We were late, my mom included, to her mother's wake because we were watching Rick Fox bank in a last second shot to beat #1 seed Oklahoma to go to the 1990 Sweet 16. It's a family tradition in the south....

Football in general is huge in the south and, historically, there have been very few pro football teams in the south. So, if you wanted a football fix beyond Friday nights, you picked a local college team to pull for....and that get's passed from generation to generation whether you attended the college or not.....it's bragging rights....
That sounds about right. Nearly everyone in my family attended Texas and I was raised a Longhorn fan, however, I came to my senses and got the hell out of that backwards a$$ place as soon as the opportunity presented itself. You can't throw a stick in Texas without hitting someone wearing burnt orange. Hell, even the redneck in the rusted trailer with three teeth in his mouth down the street was a die hard Longhorn fan.
You never met my family...none of us has ever been impressed with UT (and all their money and arrogance). Then again, I don't know when you left.

Appa's out for this game. Booked vacation and will be backpacking in UP (Porcupine Mtn Wilderness) that week. Enjoy and hope to see some later in Sep in the Zoo if I can swing that....

Why not just book some time off around the EWU game and go backpacking in a real wilderness area, like The Bob? :coffee:

If anyone would like to actually talk about the game, tennessee will win by a large margin. Maybe 49-14 or something like that. The vols have 2 six ft five inch tall recievers named da'rick rogers and justin hunter and a fast and tall tight end in mychal rivera that montana will have no answers for. Tyler bray throws for 5 touchdowns before he takes a break for most of the second half. I would really be stunned if this game was close at all. I'm sure i'll get bashed for this, but that's just the truth of what I see happening.

And 6'5 WR Matt Milton. Wide Receiver U is back.

And a returning 1,000 yard rusher.

Tennessee scores at will and wins by as much as they feel like.

Anyone have an extra ticket in the Griz section? I'll drive down if I can sit with FCS people. Hell, I'd even pick up any FCS fans along the way. Knoxville is only a ten hour drive. Piece o' cake.

If it were not the first game of the year, I might agree. Of course I am hoping the first game of the year problems affect UT and obviously don't Montana. I have no clue how it will go, but you know I want Montana to keep it close enough to make the UT fans to complain as to why they didn't beat us by more.

Actually, I am meeting friends in Nashville and they are taking me over so my "me-ness" should be diluted.

I believe it's more of a 'mountain' thing. You can't throw a rock without hitting a UT fan in east Tenn'see and western NC (including Boone) -- through the Blue Ridge and Smokies.

BTV (before television) in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s UT football was really big in the hills and hollars of southern Appalachia, so you essentially have 4-5 generations of mountain folk who were raised on Volunteer football. Other than making likker and growin' tators, what it was, was UT football.

And for youin's from UM who might be headin' to the game in Knoxville, I hope you like Rocky Top. Woooooooooo!

Sidebar: Coach Robert Neyland was recently inducted into the SoCon hall of fame. His overall coaching record at UT from 1926-52, was 173-31-2.

Not bad

I don't know why that's necessarily a "southern thing" - I would expect to see similar instances elsewhere in the country. If you like college sports of any kind (whether you're an alum or not) I guess you have to pick a team. I never played NFL but I have favorite teams.

Iowa is the same way, as all big teams are. Every drunk, bedhead high school dropout trailer fvck in Iowa is a Hawks fan and lives or dies by them. Minnesota is an urban university, with a higher educated alumni base and the trailer quotient is waaaay lower than Tennessee and Iowa.

You've obviously not been to many Gophers games. Their fans are fairly quiet right now because the team is down. If they start winning again, you see a resemblance to the Iowegan Hawkeye faithful.
