Algae cheaper than gas- could power all our fuel needs
There's no need for middle east (or even Gulf or Alaskan) Oil at this point in time

You do realize just how many things are made from oil - outside of gasoline - don't you?
Re: Algae cheaper than gas- could power all our fuel needs
Algae is neat, but producing it in sufficient volume to be worthwhile is the real challenge.

I like burning gas. Thanks though.

I've done some work with a guy who does algae diesel in the Twin Cities - it's a LONG way from providing even a percentage of our fuel... as a proof of concept, it's interesting... it's scaling that is the problem.

It's not even close to feasible, just like every other whacky biofuel idea.

Do you really believe private investors would throw billions of dollars at them if they knew they couldn't get some sort of return?Pwns wrote:It's not even close to feasible, just like every other whacky biofuel idea.

It wasn't that long ago the going to the moon was a wacky idea. Just because the technology for efficient biofuel doesn't exist now, doesn't make the idea wacky.Pwns wrote:It's not even close to feasible, just like every other whacky biofuel idea.

They should turn it back into a linerboard plant and quit fucking up the town. (if you ask me) Oh, and allow some more logging to go on.Grizalltheway wrote:I guess we should tell the pepes who just bought the old mill out in Frenchtown to fuck off?grizzaholic wrote:

Re: Algae cheaper than gas- could power all our fuel needs
How many people did they put out of work? Then tell them that they would sell it and put a 10 year ban on competitive business on the site. What kind of BS is that? And not entertain offers from local investors that wanted to buy it.Grizalltheway wrote:Please educate me on exactly how they're fucking up the town?grizzaholic wrote:

The previous company that was interested in it wanted to scrap it completely.grizzaholic wrote:How many people did they put out of work? And the place would be still be producing and employing if they had either sold it to the employees or the investors in town that wanted to keep it a linerboard plant. But no....they pretty much told everyone to FUCK OFF.Grizalltheway wrote:The previous company that was interested in it wanted to scrap it completely.grizzaholic wrote:

There are people in Iowa working on it but it won't go anywhere until we kill the ethanol lobby in the state.grizzaholic wrote:If they did it in IOWA, I bet it would work great.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:

I hate ethanol. There are 2 places in Missoula where you can buy non-ethanol gas. It is either 91 or 93. It is where I fill up always...especially for lawn mowers/chainsaws/etc...HI54UNI wrote:There are people in Iowa working on it but it won't go anywhere until we kill the ethanol lobby in the state.grizzaholic wrote:

The only non-ethanol around here is 87 octane. 89 and 92 are both 10% ethanol. The shitty part is the ethanol is cheaper in Iowa, the only state I've saw that.grizzaholic wrote:I hate ethanol. I hate ethanol too. More subsidies for the farmers. Plus it uses way too much water to make it.grizzaholic wrote:I hate ethanol. There are 2 places in Missoula where you can buy non-ethanol gas. Our state senator (farmer) is a big ethanol backer. He's tried for several years (with no success fortunately) to get a requirement that all gas sold in the state have ethanol in it. I asked him what I was supposed to do about my lawnmower and boat and he had no answer for me.
