The Oyster Bowl

Post by ∞∞∞ »

For anyone who knows anything about it, well it's finally back to its proper home at Foreman Field! When JMU visits ODU on October 29, the 62nd annual Oyster Bowl will officially be played. It's the first one at Foreman Field since Georgia Southern beat VMI 31-13 in 1995. It used to be a pretty big deal in Hampton Roads until it became a game held between mostly DIII and NAIA schools, so hopefully this makes it into a big deal once again.
The Oyster Bowl, an annual college football game in Hampton Roads for 61 years, will return to Old Dominion University's Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium as a featured game on the Monarchs 2011 football schedule, as announced today by athletic director Dr. Wood Selig.

Sponsored by the Chesapeake based Khedive Temple of Shriners International, the Oyster Bowl was played at ODU's stadium from 1946-1995. The Monarchs home contest on Oct. 29, against state and CAA rival James Madison University, will serve as this year's 62nd Oyster Bowl, with an additional $1 added to the ticket cost of this game to support the Shriners' Hospitals for Children...

But the deal about some of the proceeds going to the Shriners is pretty cool :thumb:

Should be a good time once again. In the local paper, our AD hinted that it's not just gonna be a bowl in name, and that they're going to make this a huge event for the Hampton Roads community, even if they don't have tix for the actual game. Should be fun to see what they come up with, plus it'll get more people out to campus which is never a bad thing. And lookin' back at the tradition, there's been some name programs come to Foreman Field:

The Citadel, NC State, South Carolina, Duke, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Navy, Georgia, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Southern Mississippi, Clemson, East Carolina, Richmond, Temple, W&M, VMI, Georgia Southern, and Tulane.

Of course, this is ODU's first appearance and will be JMU's second appearance (lost in '85 to Richmond).

Tickets for that particular game went up $1. The money raised from that game will go directly to the Shriners. Means they will make roughly $20,000 from that one game.

Some more history on the game...

VMI vs. the Citadel in the Oyster Bowl. It was billed as "The Military Classic of the South". Remember it well. Sort of. The Shriners manned the gates and let you bring in coolers of whatever you wanted.

VMI v. The Citadel is always "The Military Classic of the South", no matter where the game is played...........and I still get sick recalling Jervey's long run thru the entire VMI secondary.

Sounds like a great time and is certainly for a great cause. Hope for a sell out and a good haul for the shrine's to benefit the terrific work they do.

ODU sells out every game.

This year will be no different.

Oyster Bowl in the '80s rocked, as was the only football game of the year.

ODU's website now shows it with a 3:30 start time. That must have been added this week, because when I checked last week it was still listed as TBA. I'll be there. Might even bring my smoker and do smoked oysters....

Things like that were common occurrences when VMI played in the Oyster Bowl.

Favorite Oyster Bowl memory....1977 W&M vs. East Carolina. W&M QB Tom Rosantz breaks loose around the right and is headed for a long TD run when a retired ECU coach comes off the sideline and takes him down around the 20. ECU is penalized, and W&M goes in for the score to win 21-17.

W&M was 1-1 in "bowl" games that year, losing the Tobacco Bowl at Richmond City Stadium to Va Tech 17-8.

Tribe4SF, I hope you don't mind me posting on here what you posted on the JMU page on the Zone, as I want to get a response from an ODU fans(s). On the thread on the JMU page on the Oyster bowl you posted:

"Start planning your tailgate location early. There's plenty of parking in the garages at ODU, but no tailgating there. The tailgate lots are almost exclusively season pass lots. We found three passes to the Blue lot on Craig's List last year for the W&M game. It's right across Hampton Blvd. from Foreman next to WHRO. Once you're in it's open parking so you can be together. Extra folks can park in the garage two blocks away, and walk in to tailgate. Pre-game festivities, and stadium atmosphere at ODU are second to none."

I highlighted and posted in reply:

"That sucks. I'll probably be in a group with 2, possibly even 3 vehicles. Even if we could come up with a couple if these Blue Lot passes, I want to be tailgating where all the other JMU folks are, and it dosn't sound like too many JMU folks could get passes for this Blue Lot. If JMU folks can't tailgate en masse because of some stupid Villanova like tailgating rule (like Nova used to have) where only season ticket holder lots can tailgate, then I'm sure there will be a pre game sports bar or 2 where a lot of JMU folks meet up at in lieu of tailgating."

So for any of you ODU fans to confirm, there is no tailgating in all non season ticket holder lots?

Here's the link to their game day parking map. The lots 52, 54 and 55 are technically general parking, but there are very few spots available on gameday, and they're a good hike to the stadium. I think you can get one-day passes for their Brown Lot, but it's an even longer walk. All the lots, and garages with color names are Big Blue Club pass only.

ODU has over 14,000 season ticket holders, and 4,000 students at every game. They need all their surface lots for Big Blue Club, and we visitors are left out in the cold.

Ok then, sounds like away fans if they want to tailgate with a bunch of others from your schools you got to get your arse their early for Lot 52, 54, 55, or Brown before they fill up. ODU fans, what time/how many hrs before kickoff do those Lots open up gameday?

Right now I don't know of a single CAA school where away fans and non season ticket holders don't have a lot or lots to tailgate. Nova for a couple seasons (07'-08'?) closed down tailgating to all but their donor lots. Caught a lot of flack for that from non season ticket holders and away fans- I remember Bruce Dowd criticized that in a CAA Today column a few years ago. I know a yr or 2 ago they started allowing tailgating in about 1/2 of their big lot across from the stadium for $20 a car.

OK, I'm having a conversation with myself.

ODU fan Smudge over on the CAA basically stated:
-Contact ODU athletic department and inquire about getting passes to the BROWN lot. The other lots are always packed, but the BROWN lot always has more than enough spaces available. Tailgated there a few times and every time it's not even half-full, but is furthest from the stadium
-He wasn't quite sure if away fans can get passes for the lot. Everytime he tailgated there he got the passes from ticket holders.

So ODU fans, can you'all confirm yes or no on can away fans get a day pass to the Brown lot? If its a mile or so walk would just start walking over around 45 min before the game for the walk and getting into stadium, piss, and getting to seats.

Lot 52 doesn't exist anymore, and I don't think 54 nor 55 will either by the end of the summer (teacher housing being built). And even if they did, tailgating has never been allowed in any of those lots. The only lots tailgating is allowed on are the following:

BLUE
PURPLE
BLACK
SILVER
RED
LIGHT BLUE
GREEN
ORANGE
YELLOW
WHITE
BEIGE
BROWN

As for confirming the open spaces in BROWN lot, I can't 'cause I'm the one who gave you that info (I'm smudge). Hopefully someone else will be able to give you further confirmation about that, but calling up ODU is probably easier.

ps. there are places around campus (Baptist Ministry comes to mind immediately) that charge a fee for being able to park and tailgate on their property. Not sure how much, and spaces are probably limited, but that's another option.

The whole mall area is open for anyone to tailgate. It's a sweet spot, usually bands playing and lots of things going on.
