Canada's Conservatives score massive election win

By Janet Guttsman and Louise Egan

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's Conservatives stormed to a decisive victory in Monday's federal election, winning 54 percent of the seats in Parliament and securing a stable four-year term in power after vowing to focus on the economy.

The Conservatives grabbed 167 seats in Canada's Parliament, well above the 155 they needed to transform their minority government into a majority, according to provisional results. They won about 40 percent of the vote, beating expectations.

The victory, a relief for Canadian financial markets, left support for the separatist Bloc Quebecois in tatters and the party's leader without a seat. Bloc Quebecois advocates independence for the province of Quebec.

The Liberals, who have ruled Canada for more years than any other party, were reduced to a dismal third place showing with their worst ever seat haul.

"What a great night. ... Canadians can now turn the page on the uncertainties and the repeat elections of the past seven years and focus on building a great future," Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper told a victory rally in Calgary, Alberta early on Tuesday morning.

"Our plan (is) to create jobs and growth without raising your taxes," he said to loud cheers.

The market's nightmare scenario of an unstable minority government headed by the pro-labor New Democratic Party never came to pass. Harper now has free rein to keep corporate taxes low in the nation of more than 34 million people and bring in a string of tax breaks once he balances the budget, projected within four years.

"It's going to reinforce quite a bit of stability and confidence, and Canada is going to continue to be very attractive for foreign investors," said Youssef Zohny, portfolio manager at Van Arbor Asset Management in Vancouver.

"With a Conservative majority, you're essentially assured a fairly business-friendly platform, low taxes, continued investment in energy and potential future energy projects. In terms of investment it's definitely got a bullish bias."...

Now the Canadian dollar might shoot up to $1.50. Free market trends up there are stronger than they are down here.

your understanding of Canada is limited, Padawan.

even the Tories in Canada would largely be Dems here... notice - nobody is talking about dismantling their National Health Service... it's a matter of degrees.

the Liberal Party was poorly run, and lost primarily because the NDP - the more progressive party - won. The Tories success came from winning ridings in the Maritimes and southern Ontario... where the left was fractured.

the real winner last night was the NDP, who are now the largest minority party in the country. while the election was a rousing success for the Tories - having a clear majority is certainly big for a party that was a shambles 10 years ago... Harper faces something altogether different from the NDP than he did from the Liberals... should be interesting to watch.

the other positive development from Monday was destruction of the BQ. down to 4 ridings now - their party, and likely their movement, has had their Waterloo... Gilles Duceppe, their leader, lost his own seat. Long term, the NDP sweep in Quebec does not augur well for the Tories... and now they'll have to walk the line for four years - the party is far out of step with Canadian voters, according to their own Prime Minister... anything too radical would send them reeling.

As for the Liberals - it's likely time for them to start talking to the NDP about re-uniting the Canadian left. the Tories still didn't get 50% of the vote - and likely never will... so at this point it's their splitting of the left votes that is costing them dearly.

It's not like Canada is some bastion of freedom or anything. However, it does show that if given the choice, people will choose self determination over a state controlled planned community most of the time.

Hey, Einstein, we get it that it's a matter of degrees: nobody is claiming that the parties are equivalent to what we have here in America. T-Man's point was that, given the choice the Canadian people chose the most conservative option.

also, they didn't... the tories took just under 40% of the national vote - between the liberals and the ndp, they took 49% (toss in the greens and they were over 50%) with the rest going to the BQ...

as it is - they're in the majority because that's how elections work and I don't deny, nor dispute that... it's the way things crumble... however - it's not a roaring mandate for the Tories... and I suspect Harper, a shrewd pol, knows this.

Anytime someone starts a comment with "your understanding of XXXXX is limited..." can go fuck himself. He has no fucking CLUE how much anyone knows about the politics of Canada. Just becuase he works in politics and happens to live in a state that borders Canada doesn't make him an expert on all things political, not to mention the fact that he seriously twisted T-Mans words into something he didn't say anyway.

You can attempt to spin this any way you want. Fact remains, a larger portion of Canadians chose the more conservative of the three options. :coffee:

except that they didn't. they won a three, and in some cases four party race in many ridings.

as it is - the parliment has
162 Tories
102 NDP
34 Liberal
4 BQ
1 Green

the left has 137 to the rights 162 - with 4 going to the Bloc
if you take the popular vote the combined left got 48% - the right got 39% - the bloc got 6 and the greens got 4
riding-by-riding, had the left been united... 46 additional seats would be in their hands 44 from the tories and 2 from the bloc - giving them 183 to the tories 118 and 2 to the bloc...

point being - the Canadian left lost this election primarily because it was divided. the real message from this election was twofold - 1. the Liberals need to get their shit together and their house in order... and find a way to unite with the NDP - or the what happened to the conservatives for decades (when the reform and progressive conservatives split the torie vote) will happen to them and 2. the Bloc Quebecois is finished, and it's time to move on.

"holier-than-thou" wtf?

1. i twisted NONE of T-Man's words - he said virtually nothing aside from his headline - which was, as i pointed out, misleading.

2. the only thing i didn't do, which i should have, was acknowledge that T-Man got one thing right... the separatists time in Canadian politics is in fact over. 4 seats puts them down with the greens as a fringe party.

3. i study and follow canadian politics, partly because i like their system, partly because i know a couple guys who are torie operatives in southern ontario (hung out with them in vegas after the 08 election, and still talk to them from time to time) - and while the tories are, understandably, happy with last night - there is, smartly, caution in their joy - they realize they can't overplay their hand because only 39% of the country is with them.

Yes, holier-than-thou. Again, when you start a statement with condescending remarks like "your knowledge is limited", or something to that effect, you just come across as a pompous ass talking down your nose to the masses. And there's nothing misleading about his headline. Conservatives now hold a majority. Period. You can try to donk spin it anyway you want but facts are facts.

Basically you're saying that the fractured libs in Canada count as "one" so there's no majority with the conservatives, but the fractured conservatives in America (republicans and tea party) DON'T count as one and the party is split. Can't have it both ways, Einstein.

Can't have it both ways, Einstein.
what the what?

the tea party IS THE GOP... for chrissakes... they don't have a separate apparatus, they don't run on separate ballot lines... they are a FACTION... completely different things.

the Canadians have a multi-party system... we don't. My point is that if the Canadian left united like the Canadian right did, they would win back the government with relative ease.

If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

Yeah. The usual suspects: GATW, Analjelly, You, Cap'n Cat, etc., etc.

Surprise, surprise.

Doesn't change the fact that he comes off as an arrogant, condescending blowhard. :kisswink:
