I voted for AE, hard to top two FCS titles and two Payton awards.

I am far from a Georgia Southern fan, but leaving Tracy Ham off of that list is a complete joke. Ham was AE long before AE was even a glimmer in his daddy's eye.

Re: Best All Time FCS QB
You must be talking to different people than I. 1996 was a fantastic team but I don't know if I've ever talked to anybody that would call that team better than 1995. Joe Douglass was unbelievable no doubt. We had a lot of fantastic receivers and I hung out with most of them. If you could find one that would say that DD didn't make them all a lot better players I'd be stunned. Wells told a group of us having beers one time that it was just uncanny that you could never give up on a route because even if the pocket collapsed DD would get you that ball...in a place that you could make a play on it and no one else could even if he had guys dragging him to the ground.Silenoz wrote:Well how about the fact that the 1996 team is often considered the greatest Griz team of all-time, riding on a stellar offense, sans-Dave?
Jeez, I complement our receivers of the time (Douglass was considered our greatest up until about a year ago) but no-one wants to agree with me![]()
If you think I'm taking anything away from those receivers you are mistaken but we had many, many great receivers starting with Trevathan & Clark & Tony Breland & Marvin Turk & son on and so forth from 1986 going forward to when DD got there. But nobody could get those receivers the ball like Dave could get it to his greats and the records that were falling showed that.
In games he started Dave was 33-4. The losses were to:
Delaware with Tubby Raymond at the helm and a beast of a wing T offense with Darryl Brown.
Boise State in a game where he only played about a quarter before getting injured.
Washington State with a guy leading them by the name of Drew Bledsoe.
And then Idaho with another future NFL QB.
The only guy I've seen that compares to Dave is Armanti. You say that Dave's were stacked and I'm telling you that they were not stacked in the sense you seem to be implying it here. Armanti had more to work with than Dave did. Armanti ended up with more than Dave did by virtue of that. But those guys are equal in my book. They were both God's on the field.

Re: Best All Time FCS QB
I would put Andy Hall on par with Flacco as far as being a great college quarterback. Joe was obviously a better passer, but Andy at least made up for any gap in that department with his ability to make plays with his legs.89Hen wrote:Not sure I would go that far. I assume you are putting Komlo and Nagy ahead of him?GannonFan wrote:Agreed - Flacco isn't in the top 3 of best UD QB's of all time
I think Vergantino had to be mentioned as one of the great all time UD quarterbacks as well. He was an average passer at best, but a true magician with the football. Noboby ever led the misdiretion wing-t like Billy V did.
BTW, Nagy would not be not on my short list of all time great quarterbacks at Delaware. Sure, he put up lofty passing stats during his career, but was as mobile as a bird shit post and lacked that "X" factor that makes players great. If it was crunch time and the game was on the line, Nagy would not be anywhere near my first choice amongst UD QBs to be leading the offense. Hell, I would take a healthy Dale Fry over Nagy in that situation

PSU dropped down to DII shortly after Lomax graduated.Ursus A. Horribilis wrote:I think PSU was D2 when Lomax was there but it works anyway and I'm not even sure about what I'm saying there anyway.
Lomax was a pretty good pro QB, too. Too bad he was cursed to play for a series of awful Cardinals teams.

Re: Best All Time FCS QB
The 1996 team was better than the 1995 team because the '96 team had 10 senior starters on defense. The D in '95 was pretty bad the whole regular season, but they figured things out in the playoffs & rode it to a title. The 1996 team inherited that defensive surge.Silenoz wrote:Well how about the fact that the 1996 team is often considered the greatest Griz team of all-time, riding on a stellar offense, sans-Dave?
I voted for Dickenson, of course. I think it's between him & McNair, but DD had tougher opposition (as someone else pointed out). Edwards may have ended up #1, but those injuries later in his career hampered his running. He improved greatly as a passer, but still had a few clunker games (something Dickenson never had as I recall).
Like McNair, Dickenson also proved himself as a pro. He didn't get a fair shot in the NFL, but he finished his career as—by a large margin—the most efficient passer in the history of the CFL.

I never consider anything about pro career when judging how a QB was as a college guy but just different ways of looking at things I guess.Mvemjsunpx wrote:The 1996 team was better than the 1995 team because the '96 team had 10 senior starters on defense. Thanks for the correction on Lomax, I hadn't realized that's how it went down and just assumed they were D2 all along.
Re: Best All Time FCS QB
The 1995 and 1996 teams still had the two best offenses (or at least the highest scoring) in UM history despite both playing Pac-10 teams. I'd like to think that was because a) we had our best player in program history for one of them and b) he was surrounded by studs who didn't miss a beat playing under Ah Yat
Actually, I should of never said who I voted for

Probably not "all time" QBs, but these two guys are certainly two of the best of the last 10-15 years, and they had a couple of classic duals in the playoffs.

Hey Appa, my 5k trotting friend, perhaps a poll separating RUSHING from PASSING Qb's would be very helpful? It could include Tracy Ham and this guy.........http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2007 ... ame/?print among others.

Meyer should be on this list based on his pass efficiency % alone. I don't think anyone has touched it since.

Out of curiousity, I know you're putting Gannon over Flacco, no argument there, who are your other 2? Vergantino, which is arguable, and????GannonFan wrote:Agreed - Flacco isn't in the top 3 of best UD QB's of all time, so I don't see how he could be on this list.89Hen wrote:FWIW, I think I might choose Gannon before Flacco, but DD ahead of either.
I go with DD as well. McNair was great, but DD did it against better competition.
FWIW, Tracy Ham should be on that list (as well as Gannon, of course). And since I don't see MJ around here, where the heck is the love for Mike Buck?????

Re: Best All Time FCS QB
When I saw the list and read that the criteria was their play in college, my first reaction was why is Flacco on there instead of Santos? Ricky played four years, won the Payton Award, UNH went 2-0 in the head-to-head match-ups (acknowledging that Toman finished off the go ahead TD and the game in the second meeting), he was 3-0 against FBS teams (two were BCS), etc. Aren't Ricky's passing yards something like 3rd all time in FCS. His Wildcat teams were never viewed as deep and talented as most top CAA teams let alone the top tier FCS teams yet he put up ridiculous numbers and had four playoff appearances and three quarterfinal runs. The first round loss was the game when UNH was the last team in and went out to UNI where he almost beat the overall #1 seed Panthers (juggling TD catch with :07 left for a three point win).

I'm not saying that he's the best all time, but he deserves to be on that poll list.

Santos should totally be on this list over Flacco. The only reason Flacco is on this list is because he's in the NFL now. And the only reason Tracy Ham isn't on the list either is because the poll was started by an Appy State guy.UNH_Alum_In_CT wrote:When I saw the list and read that the criteria was their play in college, my first reaction was why is Flacco on there instead of Santos? I'm gonna make a distinction here between best and favorite.
Best FCS QB: Super Dave.
SH's Favorite FCS QB: Paul Carillo.
(I understand that most of you have never heard of Carillo. He was a Sac dropdown from Ole Miss in the mid-'90s. I'm biased toward those who were around when I was.)

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.
