Changes Abound in WCU's Spring Football Drills

Post by Appaholic »

After three disappointing seasons in Cullowhee, Western Carolina football coach Dennis Wagner decided the Catamounts needed a new approach.

He fired offensive coordinator Keith Heckendorf, assumed that role himself, shrunk the playbook in half and is implementing the “pistol” offensive formation with a no-huddle attack.
Whether that’ll be enough to get WCU out of the Southern Conference basement this fall remains to be seen.
But Wagner is convinced the changes are what the Catamounts need.

Based upon the article title, I thought they might have been changing uniforms & logos or at least an article on how the changes actually include "coachng" football during spring drills.....

Wagner does have a very good running back to build the offense around. Why continue to do the same things that haven't worked. Wagner is putting the total responsibility for the offense on his own shoulders which is smart considering the fact that another 1 or 2 win season and he's likely gone anyway. it would be nice to see the Cats competitve again in the SoCon.

Nope, I'm just posting articles about WCU football since Western fans don't seem to care to if their football program receives recognition from the press.....probably one of the plethora of reasons your program is in it's current state. :coffee:

App State will have more success in the FBS than WCU will ever have in the FCS.

Hey, I've advocated for Western, Wofford & Elon when articles in local publications appear as I like to advocate for FCS football in general. Of course, as an App alum, I'll usually tweak the bill of Western fans in the process, but it's in jest. You take me too seriously Cats...and that's dangerous since I'm not a serious person... Lighten up, Francis. :kisswink:

Honestly, as it pertains to WCU, right now I am way more interested in who will be the school's new chancellor. Should know something by the end of April.

I'm guessing you missed where Charlie Cobb has said that the Sun Belt is not an option. It's ok though...I know it's easy to offend you, I hope this post hasn't. Good luck to WCU this season, it'd be great to see Wagner right the ship.

I doubt that Appy State needs you to defend them, but since you did, my question to you now that you made the above insane statement, when do you think they'll be playing in a national title game in the FBS, since Western already has done that in the FCS (1AA)?

I figured the big news at Western Carolina was that they finally managed to get all of the cows off their practice field and that they didn't leave too many piles for spring football practice.

Appalachian State will probably be playing for the BCS championship before Western every makes the FCS playoffs, or has a winning season in football.

I do wish Western good luck though, it really hurts to see a school with so few wins each year, especially since my sister went there. She decided not to continue her education after she got out of high school.

63 total guys competing in spring drills. 10-15 being held out to finish rehabbing 2010 injuries and a few walk ons hit the road. Wagner and staff are disappointed that a few kids are having to sit out to concentrate on academics, but the majority of these are expected back in the Fall. LOTS of kids will remain on campus this summer doubling up on course work and lifting, etc just to stay ahead and we just brought in 4 new DBs over the weekend including Navy transfer De'Von Richardson.

It's taking Wags longer than I and others would've liked but this 2011 should be both his biggest and fastest team since he arrived in 2008. I am glad he and his staff are holding our kids accountable grades wise when other coaches failed horribly at this.

Again, just waiting patiently..........and for a new chancellor. Chancellor Bardo was a God send to WCU academically. It's time for a new leader to continue that work(including the Millenium initiative)and to improve the overall athletic department. Despite the naysayers, I'm excited to be a Catamount. GO CATS!!!
