So I posted this thread over on eGriz hoping to get some reasonable responses, but of course it has turned into a pissing match with maybe 1/2 of a response that adds to the conversation.
What is your guys take on the fact the Griz had huge fumble and tackling issues this last year. As always, I don't know enough to comment, but thought the article I reference below made sense to me. The Griz had a huge amount of starters injured this last year.
Here is my post:
I read an interesting article in regards to the UW Huskies and their beginning to mid-season tackling issues. The coaches realized they were not allowing the team to practice hard enough due to injury and worry of possible injury, and thus when gameday came along, the Huskies had too many broken and missed tackles.
Watching this last season, I just couldn't figure out how the team "forgot" how to hold onto the ball and tackle. Could this have been a factor? The coaches not able to let the team practice hard enough due to all the injuries? I don't know enough to say one way or another, but believe this is a valid point.
Someone who watched both Hauck and Pflu practices might be able to add more, and those that know more about football in general can tell me if I am nuts.

Re: Fumbles and missed tackles
as i posted over on egriz, i think this all has to do with pflugrad's inexperience as a head coach. great recruiter? sure. does that translate to head coaching? we'll see. considering who he was replacing, i don't think last year was suprising. the thing he has to make sure of is that the penalties, turnovers, ect aren't a common theme. maybe not the easiest task for someone with no head coaching experience OR a guy trying to replace bobby hauck.
i experienced something similar my senior year of high school football. that year, our team got a new head coach. the new coach replaced a very popular coach who had the reputation as being a hard ass. the new guy was the exact opposite. a great coach and a nice guy but was more of a buddy than the classic head coach/father figure/drill sergant type. long story short, our team struggled heavily that year. our biggest problem? no discipline: penalties, turnovers, and piss poor tackling. not only that, but it seemed some guys on our team took advantage of the new "less stressful" atmosphere. no one, especially seniors, was held accountable. the insane were running the asylum.
don't know if this is what's going on witth the griz, but it wouldn't shock me

I have the same take on it. That's about the same thing I said in a conversation with some friends after the season.big_meowski wrote:as i posted over on egriz, i think this all has to do with pflugrad's inexperience as a head coach. great recruiter? sure. does that translate to head coaching? we'll see. considering who he was replacing, i don't think last year was suprising. the thing he has to make sure of is that the penalties, turnovers, ect aren't a common theme. maybe not the easiest task for someone with no head coaching experience OR a guy trying to replace bobby hauck.

Hauck had a similar type of result but for the opposite reason...I think he decided to lighten his own load and let his staff have a little more direction in what went on and BH started to concentrate on the big picture and the details of it all a little more.
I think (hope) Pflu learned a lot about tightening up his personal style to the benefit of the whole team and we'll see how it works out. I'll bet he saw some ways he can make a better run at it this year.
BTW did your new coaches last name start with a "P" too? I figure there is a reason you didn't throw it out there but if so he's a friend and I know the struggle he went through taking over out there.

This problem persisted all season long right? I think that answers some of the questions.
