2011 Missouri Valley Recruiting Rankings

Post by guinzone »

Paladin, the most hated YSU fan in Youngstown, has done some studying of the 2011 MVFC recruiting picture. He reports the following. And as a side note, if any of you guys want proof that this guy is not a YSU homer, I'll provide you dozens of posts. Here is his analysis:
I've looked at the MVFC schools recruits and compared them with YSU. This is the first year I've been doing this that I can say YSU finished with the best recruiting class in the MVFC. By sheer quality and numbers, YSU stands head & shoulders above the rest. It wasn't close . Have never ranked YSU #1 till now.

Of note --
I'd rank UNI second. They added 17 H.S. recruits ( 2 QBs & the kid from Jencks Okla. looks like a winner).
I thought SDS was third with 26 H.S. & 2 Jucos.
Next would be WIU, who brought in 20 H.S. and One transfer ( Theon Dixon , Cleve. Glenville /Ball St.) and 2 Jucos. They hit Fla. (5) & Texas (1) with some good players. They may be better than I think.
NDS would be next with 21 H.S. recruits. The rest of the MVFC wasn't all that great.
This was a year in which YSU went heavy on Jucos/transfer while the rest of the MVFC went for H.S. kids. Thus, there is no immediate help coming to the MVFC schools whereas YSU should be getting numerous starters from the Jucos/transfers that help immediately. Considering that I believe YSU has its best Juco class ever, this is an edge that the Guins should hold for a couple of years while the H.S. kids are learning the ropes.
Personally, I would have UNI at first and YSU at second. Haven't studied the other schools that extensively, but NDSU would likely be my third and SDSU around fourth.

Yeah right this is the first year EVER that YSU has the best recruiting class in the MVFC--those that think YSU has had a great recruiting class in the last 10 years definitely missed their seat on the comet!!!! Where the hell did you get that info from--your neighbors dog????? UNI choking in the playoffs--now thats like clockwork!

I have NEVER come on here and said we earned the top recruiting class in the past. Our recruiting classes under Heacock were embarrassing and loaded with D2 talent. Our recruiting under Wolford has improved drastically. Under Heacock we were competing with the Walsh's and Slippery Rock's for recruits, now we are competing with the MAC and sometimes Big East for recruits and we are beating them out.

I don't think anyone from YSU was silly enough to brag that our recruiting class was tops--in fact this year I see that you have stated that UNI has the best recruiting class in the MVFC.It will be interesting to see how the MVFC turns out this year--the Sycamores are back so the whole MVFC is one big question mark--YSU's talent level will definitely be much higher(with a 3 star and 4 star linebacker) but it doesn't guarantee that we will be much improved.Recruiting classes can have a large bearing on the coming season but with so many variables and intangibles its difficult to predict what the final standings will be. :coffee:

Wrong.

The program that picks up the HS players and develops them always has a fresh batch of starterts in the wing. They get help every year. The transfer programs are a crap shoot.

So how is that ONE recruiting class would turn it around overnight when it was overwhelmingly high school players?! Explain that one Iowans. In addition, when I made those remarks I did not know that we would lose our top three tacklers on defense! Two were kicked off the team, while a third was ineligible due to academics.

With that third player returning, and with a load of very solid JUCO players coming to help provide depth on defense, I truly feel we have a great shot to go 7-4 this year.

Will we win the league?? No. UNI or NDSU will. But I feel we will be around that 3rd spot.

JUCO's are not the answer. If you are building your program off of JUCO's you will fail.

We had 10 JUCO's, 24 HS players, and 1 FBS transfer who will also likely start.

YSU has had plenty of JUCO's starting over the years, but never had we had such an influx at once. A few All-American JUCO's and a number of first team conference players as well. I did notice our early JUCO's were pretty damn smart too. Really high on the kid from Snow College in Utah. Chose YSU over BYU and Missouri State. Kid seems very intelligent from what I've heard.

That represents 40% of the total number of aid recipients a FCS team can have (which I believe is 85). A lot of house cleaning must be going on at YSU to have 34 signees. Hence the immediate need for JUCO players.

I would agree with clenz that regularly having more 3-4 (at most) JUCOs/transfers in a signing class is going to lead to longer term problems.

Last year our recruiting class was so-so but considering that a new coach was just hired and the fact he wasn't allotted much time left to recruit he did an admirable job.Having a great recruiting class is an important factor but its by no means the only factor.Nobody can ever predict key injuries or even if a stud h.s. player will hack it at this level or get kicked off for disciplinary actions or inadequate grades. I do remember guinzone saying things about us getting recruits from Florida last year--we might be in trouble because we only got one from Florida this year lol.Mike Furrey and Bill Bealles were two of UNI's greatest players--both making the NFL and both hailing from the Buckeye state!(Plenty of talent up here but we have Cincinnati,Ohio State,Bowling Green,Kent State,Dayton,Akron,Toledo,Ohio U.all here in Ohio in Division 1 as well as Pitt and Robt Morris 60 milesaway.)Two decades ago YSU was a dominant force--Last decade YSU was a joke--Last year was transitional--we came in last, winning only 3 games (of which 2 were gimmees) however we were never blown out(except Penn State) and this year will be the new coach's first full year of recruiting and I'm expecting a much better season with many locals jumping back on the bandwagon--also hoping the MVFC puts up a much better showing in the playoffs. :twocents:

I don't see you going 7-4 or finishing 3rd - the MVC is going to be up next year and there is a 600 lb. gorilla in the room that everybody is ignoring.

So awful that we easily handled 2 of 3 conference playoff teams with freshman DBs. Like the one that pick 6ed you in his first start.

You're just being snippy because we've been beating your azzes with metronomic regularity for years now. There may still be a 5th year senior or two around that can vaguely recall losing the boys in lavendar..... :coffee:

True dat, YSU is bad loss no matter who you are or how you slice it. 4-7 next year, tops. :coffee:

For YSU? Do you want to bet on that one? I don't see us losing to St. Francis (PA) or Valpo at home. In addition, we also have MSU, WIU, SDSU, ILSU at home. If you can't win 3 of those 4 in Youngstown then you got issues. The road games will tell the whole story for YSU. At SIU, NDSU, UNI, INSU, and Michigan State.

6-7 wins.

I don't know what is more pathetic. Your lame ass excuses, you claiming that SIU "handled" anybody last year, or the fact that you think SIU has surpassed UNI in any way.

Excuses? :? True that .500 in conference is way below our standard, but

We beat you this year. We beat you last year at your place. We beat you the year before that too. We have surpassed you on the field. The only thing we haven't surpassed you in is spectacular choke jobs against non-scholarship teams in the national playoffs. You're our bitches, to put it in today's vernacular.

But at least you'll always be a part of FCS history.
