Sep 17 - vs. New Haven (Division II)

W&M fans are blaming Penn for sticking them with the D2 game. I find it hard to believe that an Ivy League team would be forced to back out of a game, given that they only schedule 10 games per season, non-conference games are irrelevant to their championship hopes, they don't play FBS opponents and their conference schedule is set for the next 100 years or so, but that's the word from W&M fans.

So far, the Penn backing out rumor is the word from only 1 W&M fan on our board. There were a couple of responses to that statement but nobody looks sure and some are even taking it with a grain of salt so who knows if it's true.

That said, if you go to the W&M board, you will see only 1 person that seems to be ok with New Haven (and that guy only has 24 posts and he has no clue what he is talking about) and the rest of us are not happy at all. W&M screwed up big time scheduling this year.

The New Haven game is a major disappointment. I'll be interested to hear our AD's explanation, but I fear this is a matter of just not taking care of business.

As for Lastminuteman....really? That's what you took from your participation in the threads on our boards? :tothehand:

From what I understand, the athletic department looked high and low for an FCS opponent for the third OOC game. Since the Tribe was already scheduled to play at VMI and at Virginia, the game had to be at Zable. Not too many teams want to play on the road for a single-game contract against a potential playoff team.

The athletic department is just as disappointed having to pull in a D2 opponent as the fans are, but a 4-game home schedule would be worse. (Just ask the EWU fans how happy they are with their home schedule in 2011)

While I will give you that it might be hard to find a replacement at a later date, your premise is a little shaky. UD has gotten MANY I-AA teams to come to the Tub for a one game deal.

This may not be an apples-to-apples comparison. The average attendance at UD is twice what it is at W&M. Presumably the guarantee UD provides would be larger as well.

The only single-game OOC opponent at Zable in the last 15 years was Central Connecticut in 2009, which I understand was arranged by (and partially paid for by) ODU to get out of playing W&M in their inaugural season.

I honestly have no idea what UD pays a Duquesne, Albany, Monmouth, etc... Money isn't the entire reason to play a game at Zable though. You need to bill it as the gateway to the Hampton Roads area and the fertile recruiting grounds. :thumb:

ODU already has that area locked up. Marge and Willy might as well fold 'em up and give up playing football.

Why did we need to schedule a single-game contract? Couldn't we sign a home and home contract with the 2011 game being at W&M? Agreed that we need a home game but it's very short-sighted if they were just looking at single-game contracts and not at home and homes

I thought the 757 area was overreccruited or the students there just couldn't get into schools based on their academics :D

Perhaps we have H&H contracts already set up for the next few years? Teams might be reluctant for a 2011/2016 H&H.

I agree - UD's proven you can get teams to come for single games as they've done it successfully for the better part of a decade now. And even though W&M doesn't bring in as much revenue as UD does, I'm sure they could swing it just once.

So if they couldn't, it just sounds like someone did back out on them at a late date and all the FCS teams that would go for a single game deal were already booked. Heck, even if W&M didn't demand a single game and would've been fine with a home and home deal (assuming in Williamsburg this year) they might've still had trouble finding someone to play at this late date.

On the bright side, W&M just needs to go 8-3 and, even with a DII on the schedule, they're a mortal lock for the playoffs. 7-4 won't cut it, but going 7-4 with that schedule isn't really playoff worthy anyway.

CCSU was paid $70k by ODU to travel to Zable for that game.

The last figure I heard on this was $60k. This was to cover their travel expenses. A hefty price, nonetheless, for a scheduling mistake. But it was all good in the end. ODU got an extra home game which netted $200k+.
