Cal Poly's 2011 recruits:
Christopher Brown, QB/DB, 6-0, 200, Los Angeles, CA (Dominguez HS)
Brown quarterbacked Dominguez High School under head coach Willie Donerson to a 10-2 record last fall, including its San Gabriel Valley League championship in four years and a second-round berth in the CIF-Southern Section Western Division playoffs. The Dons lost to eventual runner-up Arroyo Grande 17-7. As a senior, Brown passed for 1,219 yards and 13 touchdowns without an interception, completing 75 percent of his 175 passes. He also rushed for 774 yards and six touchdowns en route to first-team All-San Gabriel League honors for the second straight year. As a junior, Brown passed for 2,166 yards and 15 touchdowns with six interceptions, completing 169 of 256 passes (66 percent). He also rushed for 1,089 yards and eight touchdowns as Dominguez posted a 6-6 record and reached the semifinal round of the CIF-Southern Section Western Division playoffs. Recruited by Fresno State, Hawai’i and Nevada, Brown chose Cal Poly because “it was the top academic institution of schools that recruited me,” adding that “Cal Poly also recruited me as a quarterback from Day One. I believe that Cal Poly is a great place to be.”
Karlton Dennis, DB, 5-9, 180, La Palma, CA (Servite HS)
Dennis recorded nine interceptions in his last two seasons under head coach Troy Thomas at Servite High School. Both his junior- and senior-year teams posted 14-1 records. Servite won the Trinity League title and CIF-Southern Section Pac 5 Conference championship last fall, losing only to De La Salle 48-8 in the California State High School Open Division championships at the Home Depot Center. As a senior, Dennis notched six interceptions and 87 tackles en route to Trinity League defensive MVP, first-team All-Orange County, first-team All-CIF-Southern Section Pac 5 Conference and second-team All-State honors. Dennis, who has 4.5 speed in the 40 and runs on the Friars’ track and field team, also earned a spot on the Los Angeles Times High School All-Star Football Team. In 2009, Dennis’ junior season, Servite was the state Division II champion. Dennis notched three interceptions and 56 tackles (31 solo) en route to second-team All-Trinity League honors. He was a two-year starter at cornerback for the Friars. Dennis was recruited by Stony Brook (formerly SUNY at Stony Brook), Colgate, BYU, San Jose State and Weber State, but chose Cal Poly because it has a “great foundation and coaches as well as tradition.”
Christopher Fletcher, RB/DB/RS, 5-9, 175, Chula Vista, CA (Eastlake HS)
Fletcher accounted for over 1,000 yards of offense as a senior running back under head coach John McFadden at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista. Fletcher, son of former San Diego Chargers defensive back Chris Fletcher, rushed for 666 yards on just 66 carries (10.1 average per carry) and caught 17 passes for 389 yards. He scored eight touchdowns on the ground and produced a long run of 67 yards and added two scores receiving with a long of 75 yards. On defense, Fletcher notched 35 tackles (25 solo) with four interceptions and eight pass breakups. He also averaged 11.7 yards on 11 punt returns. Fletcher earned first-team All-Metro-Mesa League honors, was named the league’s offensive player of the year and also earned first-team All-CIF-San Diego Section accolades as he led the Titans to an 11-1 record, first-place finish in the Metro-Mesa League at 4-0 and a berth in the semifinal round of the CIF-San Diego Section Division I playoffs. Eastlake’s only loss of the year was a 20-0 decision to Mira Mesa in the semifinals. As a junior, Fletcher rushed for 538 yards and seven touchdowns, caught 22 passes for 503 yards and six scores and notched 22 tackles and four interceptions on defense. He also returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, averaging 29.4 yards on eight returns, and was named first-team All-Metro-Mesa honors, named his team’s best offensive player of the year and earned MVP honors from the San Diego Chapter of the National Football Association. Other schools that recruited Fletcher were Nevada, Montana State, Sacramento State and San Diego State. He chose Cal Poly “because of the instant connection once on campus.”
Dylan Gutierrez, OL/DL, 6-4, 250, Ventura, CA (Ventura HS)
Gutierrez notched 14 sacks in his last two seasons under head coach Brad Steward at Ventura High School. His 52 tackles in his senior season included 8.5 sacks and Gutierrez also recovered a pair of fumbles as Ventura finished 6-5 overall and second in the Channel League at 3-1. The Cougars qualified for the CIF-Southern Section Western Conference playoffs. On offense, Gutierrez carried the ball one time and scored a touchdown on it, a one-yard run, against Camarillo. He earned first-team All-Channel League, first-team All-Ventura County and first-team All-CIF-Southern Section Western Conference honors as a defensive lineman, in addition to several team awards. In his junior season, Gutierrez recorded 35 tackles, including 5.5 sacks, and also played tight end on offense, catching 15 passes for 225 yards and five scores en route to first-team All-Channel League honors on defense. He was recruited by Air Force, San Jose State and New Mexico State, choosing Cal Poly because of its “great academics, location and coaches.”
Jordan Hines, QB/WR/DB, 6-2, 190, San Diego, CA (Eastlake HS)
A teammate of Christopher Fletcher, another Cal Poly national letter of intent signee, at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, Hines was a quarterback and wide receiver on offense and a defensive back on the other side of the ball during his senior season under head coach John McFadden. Hines completed 30 of 55 passes for 578 yards and six scores before shifting to wide receiver, where he caught 11 passes for 304 yards and four scores. He also rushed 25 times for 115 yards and another touchdown. On defense, Hines made 15 tackles and broke up four passes. He earned first-team All-Metro-Mesa League honors on offense and was named San Diego Union-Tribune athlete of the month for September 2010. Hines helped lead the Titans to an 11-1 record, first-place finish in the Metro-Mesa League at 4-0 and a berth in the semifinal round of the CIF-San Diego Section Division I playoffs. Eastlake’s only loss of the year was a 20-0 decision to Mira Mesa in the semifinals. As a junior, Hines was primarily a wide receiver on offense, catching 13 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns. He recorded 19 tackles, one interception and two pass breakups in the defensive secondary en route to second-team all-league honors. Hines was named the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Southern Section Athlete of the Year and helped the Titans to an 11-0-2 record and the CIF-San Diego Section Division I championship in 2009. He was a quarterback in his first two prep seasons. In addition to Cal Poly, Hines was recruited by Cal, Iowa, San Diego, Columbia, Brown, Air Force, Fresno State and San Jose State. He chose to be a Mustang simply because of “the people.” He also lettered in hockey and track, competing in the hurdles, long jump and triple jump in track. Hines placed fifth in the triple jump at the 2010 state finals with a mark of 48 feet, 10 inches, and received offers from Cal and Iowa for track.
Tu’uta Inoke, QB/LB, 6-1, 205, Sacramento, CA (Luther Burbank HS)
As a quarterback and linebacker under head coach John Heffernan at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, Inoke accounted for nearly 3,000 yards in total offense and 27 touchdowns as a senior. In nine regular season games, Inoke rushed for 1,653 yards (10.6 yards per carry) and 19 touchdowns with a long run of 85 yards. He also completed 46 of 80 passes (57.5 percent) for 1,097 yards and eight scores. His performances include nine 100-yard games rushing and four games over the 200-yard mark, topped by a 276-yard performance (17 carries) and three touchdowns against Florin. He also scored four touchdowns against both Sacramento and Kennedy. Inoke was named most valuable player of the Metropolitan Conference and also was a second-team All-Metro selection by the Sacramento Bee. Inoke led Burbank to a 6-5 record, a share of the Metro Conference title with Rosemont and a berth in the CIF-Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs.
Kristaan Ivory, RB/DB, 5-8, 195, Los Angeles, CA (Cathedral HS)
Ivory rushed for 2,059 yards, caught 95 passes and made 263 tackles in three varsity seasons under head coach Kevin Pearson at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. Ivory earned first-team All-Mission League and team MVP honors in his senior season, rushing for 324 yards (8.8 average per carry) and five touchdowns and catching 54 passes for 615 yards and three scores, including a 10-reception game against Chaminade. A team captain, he also make 111 tackles (53 solo), including 25 against Serra, along with nine pass breakups, two sacks, one fumble recovery and an interception which he returned 35 yards for a touchdown against West Adams Prep. The Phantoms were 5-5 overall and 1-4 in their first season in the Mission League. As a junior in the Del Rey League, Ivory rushed for 956 yards and 12 touchdowns, caught 32 passes for 338 yards and three scores and made 68 tackles, intercepting two passes and breaking up eight others. He returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown against Pioneer Valley. Ivory was team defensive MVP and an all-league linebacker and running back as a junior. His sophomore-year statistics include 779 yards and five touchdowns rushing, nine catches for 96 yards and two scores and 84 total tackles, including 17 against Harvard-Westlake. He also had six sacks and four interceptions, one of them returned 61 yards for a touchdown. Ivory also competed in track and field, claiming the 2010 Del Rey League shot put title with a mark of 48 feet, 10 inches. He was a four-year scholar-athlete, earned academic honors in mathematics, history and English and was a four-year varsity starter and three-time team MVP in football.
Roland Jackson Jr., WR/DB/KR, 5-10, 150, San Diego, CA (Francis Parker HS)
Jackson (pictured above) was a two-way starter and return specialist under head coach John Morrison at Parker High School in San Diego. Parker finished the regular season with a 4-6 record and a fourth-place finish in the Coastal Conference, but qualified for the postseason and finished second in the CIF-San Diego Section Division V playoffs, losing to Bishop’s 20-9 in the title game. Jackson caught 23 passes for 381 yards and six touchdowns in his senior season. On defense, he recorded 30 tackles (22 solo) and intercepted a pair of passes, returning one 29 yards for a touchdown. Jackson also returned 10 punts an average of 12.4 yards per return with a long of 30 yards and averaged 25.2 yards per kickoff return, including a 92-yard return for a touchdown. He earned second-team conference honors as a receiver and was named to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s All-Academic Team for the second straight year. As a junior, Jackson caught 24 passes for 495 yards and nine touchdowns, recorded 41 tackles and three interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, on defense, and averaged 12.0 yards per punt return and 36.5 yards per kickoff return (one touchdown). He was named first-team all-conference as a receiver and led the Lancers to an 11-3 record, the Coastal Conference and CIF-San Diego Section Division V championships and a runner-up finish in the small schools division of the state finals, losing to Modesto Christian 44-40 at the Home Depot Center in Carson. UCLA and San Diego also recruited Jackson, who chose Cal Poly because “it was the right place for me, both education- and football-wise.” He also is a four-year track letterman, competing in the 100, 200 and short relay.
Chris Judge, TE/LB, 6-3, 210, Westlake Village, CA (Oaks Christian HS/Air Force Academy)
After two years at Air Force, including a redshirt season in 2009, Judge has three years of eligibility remaining. He played in seven games with the Falcons last fall, recording a solo tackle against Northwestern State and an assisted tackle against Utah. Judge is a 2009 graduate of Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, where he was a wide receiver and linebacker in his senior season under head coach Bill Redell and helped the Lions to their sixth straight CIF-Southern Section division title, a 14-0 overall record and 5-0 mark for first place in the Tri-Valley League. Judge caught 27 passes for 522 yards and five touchdowns on offense and recorded 83 tackles (47 solo) on defense, along with five sacks, four interceptions and three pass breakups. He made 11 tackles against Carpinteria and earned second-team All-Tri-Valley League honors on defense, second-team All-Ventura County honors as a tight end and first-team all-county honors as a linebacker. Judge also was a first-team all-state linebacker. Other schools that recruited Judge included Army, Navy, Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona.
Marcus Paige-Allen, OL/DL, 6-0, 275, Sacramento, CA (Sheldon HS)
Paige-Allen. a nephew of former Dallas Cowboys standout Larry Allen, was named Delta River League co-defensive player of the year as a senior under head coach Josh Crabtree at Sheldon High School. Paige-Allen, who can bench press 440 pounds, notched 72 total tackles (34 solo), along with two sacks and a fumble recovery. His season high was 12 tackles against Oak Ridge and Paige-Allen recorded four double-digit games in tackles. Sheldon was 4-6 last fall, including a 2-3 mark for a third-place tie in the Delta River League. As a junior, Paige-Allen earned 54 tackles (20 solo) and five sacks en route to first-team all-Delta River League honors. He was all-league honorable mention as a sophomore.
Matthew Reza, DB, 6-2, 205, Huntington Beach, CA (Edison HS/Saddleback College)
Reza, a 2009 graduate of Edison High School in Huntington Beach, played two seasons at Saddleback College and will have two playing seasons remaining at Cal Poly. As a sophomore at Saddleback, Reza garnered a team-leading 77 tackles (41 solo) along with three interceptions, six pass breakups and a fumble recovery, leading the Gauchos to an 8-3 overall, 4-1 conference record and a spot in the Southern California Bowl, where Saddleback lost to Cerritos 34-14. Reza notched 23 tackles as a freshman, including 2.5 for lost yardage, one sack and one interception. As a senior under head coach Dave White at Edison High in 2008, Reza earned 69 tackles, two sacks, one interception and a pair of fumble recoveries as the Chargers posted a 7-3 record. Reza earned first-team All-Sunset League honors as a linebacker and was selected to play in the Orange County All-Star Game. He was a scholar-athlete at Edison and, in addition to football, also competed in track and field, volleyball and wrestling.
Stephen Sippel, OL, 6-3, 250, Folsom, CA (Folsom HS)
Sippel was a center under head coach Kris Richardson at Folsom High School, helping the Bulldogs to a 14-1 overall mark, the Delta River League title and the state Division II championship game at the Home Depot Center in Carson, defeating Serra 48-20. Folsom won 14 straight games after losing its season opener to Grant (Sacramento) 49-14. A team captain, Sippel earned first-team All-Delta River League and All-Metro honors as an offensive lineman. He also was named to the Sacramento All-Star Team on the offensive line and earned second-team all-state Division II honors on the offensive line as selected by MaxPreps. In addition to Cal Poly, Sippel was recruited by UC Davis, San Diego and Sacramento State. He chose to be a Mustang because of Cal Poly’s “academic reputation and ‘Learn by Doing’ approach” along with an “opportunity to play competitive football, its graduates are sought after by industry, beautiful location and great college town/community.” Sippel’s sister, Elizabeth, is a sophomore architecture major at Cal Poly.
Garrett Steele, RB/QB/S, 6-1, 205, Kingsburg, CA (Kingsburg HS)
Steele, the California Medium Schools State Player of the Year, produced state and national headlines with two Hail Mary passes in the 2010 season -- one for 80 yards as time ran out in the opener at San Luis Obispo and the other for 81 yards with two minutes to play in the final game of the year against Porterville -- leading Kingsburg to the CIF-Central Section Division III championship and a 12-1 record. The Vikings, coached by Garrett’s uncle, Dave Steele, finished in a three-way tie for the Central Sequoia League title with a 5-1 mark. Steele is believed to be the first player in California prep football history to both pass and rush for more than 2,000 yards in one season. He was originally set to play running back in 2010 before the original starting quarterback for the Vikings suffered a season-ending wrist injury in the first game of the season at San Luis Obispo. Steele took over the signal-calling duties and rushed for 2,008 yards on 249 carries (8.1 yards per carry) and 21 touchdowns. He also completed 121 of 261 passes for 2,177 yards and 26 scores. Steele notched 11 100-yard games rushing, including 269 yards on just 21 carries and three touchdowns against Immanuel, and four 2000-yard games passing. As a safety on defense, Steele notched 54 tackles and two interceptions. He also averaged 36.6 yards on 20 punts with a long of 50 yards. He has 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash and also plays basketball and runs track at Kingsburg. Steele was named most valuable player of the Central Sequoia League and was runner-up for Fresno Bee Player of the Year honors. He also earned first-team All-Fresno Bee, Cal-Hi Sports medium schools player of the year and first-team all-state honors. ESPN Radio 1430 named Steele Fresno County Player of the Year while CBS-TV 47 named him Fresno County offensive player of the year. As a junior running back, Steele rushed for 1,006 yards and 19 touchdowns with five 100-yard games and caught 28 passes for 429 yards and eight more scores. He notched 42 tackles on defense, intercepted two passes and was named to the All-Central Sequoia League first team as both a running back and defensive back. Steele also was named co-offensive player of the year in the Central Sequoia League, first-team All-Fresno Bee and second-team all-state, helping the Vikings to the first of their back-to-back CIF-Central Section championships. He was recruited by Sacramento State, Nevada and Army, choosing Cal Poly because “I felt comfortable, it has a great environment and I fit in well.”
Willie Tucker, WR/DB, 6-3, 200, El Dorado Hills, CA (Oak Ridge HS)
Tucker was the leading receiver in the CIF-Sac-Joaquin Section last fall, catching 55 passes for 1,257 yards (22.86 yards per catch) and 14 touchdowns as a senior under head coach Eric Cavaliere at Oak Ridge High School. He broke two school records -- single-season receiving yards and yards per catch -- held previously by Austin Collie of the Indianapolis Colts and Seyi Ajirotutu of the San Diego Chargers, respectively. Tucker caught three touchdown passes against both Cordova and Del Oro. He also averaged 31.9 yards on 25 punts with a long of 49 yards and was a defensive back as well, recovering a Cordova fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Tucker was named to the All-Delta River League first team, All-Metro first team as selected by the Sacramento Bee and first-team All-CIF-Sac-Joaquin Section. He also was named second-team All-NorCal by NorCal Preps and second-team All-State by Max Preps and was his team’s co-MVP. Tucker helped the Trojans to a 7-4 overall mark and a berth in the CIF-Sac-Joaquin Division I playoffs.
Andrew Walsh, WR/DB, 6-0, 195, Foothill Ranch, CA (Trabuco Hills HS)
Walsh was a two-way starter as a wide receiver and safety in his senior season under head coach Scott Orloff at Trabuco Hills High School. A team captain, Walsh recorded 39 tackles (26 solo), two interceptions, a fumble recovery and six pass breakups, leading the Mustangs to a 4-6 overall record. On offense, Walsh caught 32 passes for 463 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing eight times for 41 yards. He earned first-team All-South Coast League and All-Orange County honors and was a top-10 receiver in the league in receptions and the top 25 on defense. A 4.46 sprinter in the 40, Walsh turned down an offer from Kansas and also was recruited by North Dakota and South Dakota State, deciding to be a Mustang in his college career because “Cal Poly is a great university with an outstanding nationwide reputation. Cal Poly has an excellent football program, with a great coaching staff who really care about their players, both in athletics and in academics.” Walsh also runs track at Trabuco Hills High, competing in the 100 and long jump. As a junior, Walsh notched 47 tackles (23 solo), one sack, two interceptions, recovered three fumbles and scored a defensive touchdown en route to second-team all-league and all-county honors. His Pop Warner team also was the Mustangs.
Deonte Williams, RB, 5-10, 190, Oakland, CA (Pleasant Grove HS/NAU/Sierra College)
Williams, a 2008 graduate of Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, played one season at Northern Arizona, transferred to Sierra College for the 2009 campaign and signed a national letter of intent at San Diego State last summer but returned to community college in order to attend classes and obtain his AA degree. He has two years of eligibility remaining at Cal Poly. As a senior at Pleasant Grove High, Williams rushed for 2,447 yards and 27 touchdowns to lead the Eagles to an 11-3 record, first place in the Delta River League with a 5-0 mark and a second-place finish in the CIF-Sac-Joaquin Division I playoffs. He was named offensive player of the year by the Sacramento Bee and most valuable player in the Delta River League. Williams, a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, also caught 11 passes for 150 yards and a score and returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown against Vanden. He played as a junior at Valley High School in Sacramento and rushed for 518 yards and two touchdowns and returned a punt 90 yards for a score. As a freshman at Northern Arizona in 2008, Williams was named Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year after rushing for 950 yards and 12 touchdowns in 11 games. He had 22 carries for 194 yards and three scores against Idaho and was named runner-up for FCS Freshman of the Year honors. In 2009, Williams rushed for 1,037 yards and 14 touchdowns under head coach Jeff Tisdel at Sierra College, receiving All-NCFA Valley Conference honors. He chose Cal Poly over Montana State and Arkansas State “because of the location, academic tradition and because of the good coaching staff.”
Kyle Zottneck, OL/DL, 6-1, 260, Los Alamitos, CA (Los Alamitos HS)
A tackle on both the offensive and defensive lines, Zottneck helped lead Los Alamitos High School under head coach John Barnes to an 8-3 overall mark, first place in the Sunset League with a 5-0 record and a berth in the CIF-Southern Section Pac 5 Conference playoffs. Zottneck recorded 69 tackles on defense, including six sacks, and also notched four pass breakups, forced four fumbles, recovered a pair of fumbles and blocked a punt. Zottneck was the Griffins’ long-snapper for three seasons and earned the rare distinction of Sunset League overall MVP honors as a lineman last fall. He also earned first-team All-Orange County and first-team All-CIF-Southern Section Pac 5 honors and was named team MVP. A scholar-athlete, Zottneck also was named a National Football Foundation scholar. As a junior, Zottneck garnered 50 tackles, including three sacks, and forced a fumble en route to first-team all-league and team defensive lineman of the year honors. Zottneck was recruited by Northern Arizona, Air Force, Penn, San Diego and Colgate, choosing Cal Poly because its “academic programs are amazing, the area is beautiful and I like the offensive line scheme.”
