2011 Delaware Recruiting Class

This is the 2011 football recruiting class announced by the University of Delaware today, with comments from coach K.C. Keeler:

Derek Battle, 6-2, 185, LB, Providence (Charlotte, N.C.): High school safety who is eyed as a linebacker. Attended UD one-day camp and, Keeler said, “We really loved his speed and his ability to hit.”

Nick Boyle, LS/TE, 6-4, 235, High Point Regional (Sussex, N.J.): Versatile player who’ll eventually handle long-snapper duties, after likely 2011 LS Mark Schenauer graduates, but should also earn tight end time. “Tremendous physique,” Keeler said. “He’s 6-4, 235 but could grow into being 255, 260 without any problem at all . . . An on-the-line tight end, physical guy, runs well, catches the ball well.”

Patrick Callaway, LB, 5-10, 205, Martin Luther King (Lithonia, Ga.): First-team All-State pick in Georgia after making school record 177 tackles in 2010. “He’s the kind of football player who could possibly come in and play right away for us,” Keeler said. “Really advanced as a football player. Tremendous intelligence, great body control, very dynamic. I could see him competing for nickel and dime situations at the linebacker spot, helping us on special teams early.”

Ben Curtis, OT, 6-5, 260, Calvert Hall (Columbia, Md.): Probably had as many offers as any UD recruit, including JMU and several other CAA schools, and some I-As. “Tremendously athletic,” Keeler said. “Long arms. We think he’s a prototypical left tackle, blind-side guy. Great feet. We’re really excited about getting him.”

Eric Farkas, DB/K/P, 5-11, 170, Seminole (Heathrow, Fla.): Turned down Mississippi offer. Had 15 interceptions, 206 tackles and 128 extra points in 137 tries in career. “Really dynamic football player,” Keeler said. “Can do it all. He’s a heck of a punter. He’s a heck of kicker. He will compete for kickoffs, he will compete for field goals, he will compete in the punting position and he’ll compete at the free safety or strong safety spot.”

Steven Hughes, QB, 6-2, 190, Palm Bay (Melbourne, Fla.): Completed 330 of 573 passes (57.6 percent) for 5,695 yards and 65 TDs and rushed for 498 yards and 21 TDs in his career. Temple, Louisiana Tech, Marshall and Middle Tennessee were other suitors. “We’re just so excited about getting him,” Keeler said. “He has great poise in the pocket for a young player . . . Can run the belly read. Can pull the ball down and make a lot of yards. Great athlete. Went and watched him play basketball and he’s averaging 27-plus or so at one point in the season . . . I think he gives us as good a group of young quarterbacks as there is in the country at our level.”

*Jerel Harrison, WR, 6-0, 180, Varina (Richmond, Va.): Signed with Richmond last year but because of the prior coaching change and some paperwork issues never attended. “Can punt return, can kick return,” Keeler said. “Great speed. Good size at 6-foot. Really a very good football player.”

&Laquan James, CB, 5-10, 190, Cicero-North Syracuse/Nassau CC (Syracuse, N.Y.): Had 42 tackles and four interceptions in two seasons at Nassau, one of the country’s top JUCO programs. “Laquan had a lot of Division I interest coming out of high school,” Keeler said, “but had an ankle injury and went to junior college. He can come in here and compete for us immediately.”

*Michael Johnson, WR, 6-2, 205, Gainesville (Fla.): Part of UD’s 2010 class whose entrance was delayed by a half year as he continued to recover from ACL surgery on his knee. Now 100 percent. “What a tremendous talent he is,” Keeler said, “and we’re excited about him coming mid-year.”

*Michael Kastel, DE, 6-7, 225, Exeter Academy, N.H. (St. Charles, Ill.): Basketball standout who made himself into a football prospect. “Big body that can run,” Keeler said. “Really came off the edge. A tremendous athlete.”

Christian Marchena, C/OG, 6-2, 285, Raritan (Hazlet, N.J.): First player to commit to UD from 2011 class. “Really physical football player,” Keeler said. “He has that center/guard body that we were looking for.”

Matthew Rodriguez, TE, 6-4, 230, Park Vista (Lake Worth, Fla.): West Virginia, Duke and Wake Forest also recruited him. “Matt is a special athlete,” Keeler said. “Great speed . . . He’ll be more of an off-the-line tight end, a guy we can put on the line but move him back, H-back, spread him out wide, fullback. He’s multi-dimensional in what we can do with him.”

#Logan Shultz, DT, 6-3, 275, Gettysburg (Orrtanna, Pa.): Member of 2008 UD recruiting class who chose Delaware over some I-A offers but was injured that summer. “One of the top kids we’ve recruited here,” Keeler said. He still has some nerve damage causing arm and shoulder problems. “We’re going to bring him along real slow,” Keeler said.

David Tinsley, DL, 6-1, 215, Armwood (Seffner, Fla.): Chose Delaware over Ohio University. Had 97 tackles with 18 for lost yardage as a senior. “Really dynamic football player who can play end or tackle,” Keeler said. “Will probably end up playing inside for us . . . The kind of kid who you’re hoping you can get a lot of pass rush opportunities out of.”

Jeff Williams, LB, 6-2, 192, Freeport (N.Y.): Was under the radar of several CAA schools. “Very athletic,” Keeler said. “Good frame on him. The type of kid who will be 220, 225 without any trouble at all.”

* — 2010 high school graduate who will take part in 2011 spring practice.

& — Junior college transfer; will have two years of eligibility.

# — 2008 recruit who was severely injured when run over by a truck, now enrolled.

Two three-star recruits (James, Tinsley) and four two-star recruits (Farkas, Hughes, Rodriguez, Schultz) in the class.

From my wife's alma mater: Good athlete that played on the big school state champs his JR year... he'll do well at UD.

Ah yes, the old "paperwork issues". Never list that a kid hails from Vagina, VA. That pisses them off every time.
