your response to me seems to be one for another post. I am only talking aobut how or why WBC continues to be a thorn in the side. My response is only to that and not about either political party. It has nothing to do with that at all.native wrote:I don't think the demonization of the right will be quite as effective this time as it was when Clinton blamed Republicans for Waco and Oklahoma City.Ursus A. In the first place, the non-left has achieved a larger critical mass, at least for the time being, and they know dang well that they do not stand for violence against innocents
In the second place, hysterical and disingenuous cries of "racism," haven't worked. There is no reason to believe that the equally hysterical and disingenuous cries of fomenting violence will work, either.
Finally, the left cannot control as much of the media as they did in the mid-90's, and cannot stand scrutiny of their own even more violent, vitriolic, hateful and incendiary speech:
The left using bulls-eye imagery to "target" Republicans:
Candidate Obama threatening the use of guns (rhetorically, of course):
Even President Obama labeled Republicans as "enemies" (and by inference, the majority of Americans) in his famous October 2010 speech to Latinos:

My post was in response to the 2nd amendment/gun rights elements of the discussion on THIS thread. I thought about it and hesitated but decided that my links and analyses were pertinent to the gun rights issues.Ursus A. Horribilis wrote:your response to me seems to be one for another post. Gotcha. I guess I didn't read all the posts cuz I didn't even notice the gun rights stuff being a big part of the WBC handling. I'll go look and try to catch up.native wrote:My post was in response to the 2nd amendment/gun rights elements of the discussion on THIS thread. EDIT: In fact I went back and re-read your response to Jon about "permits." I Now realize you were talking about assembly/demonstration permits and not gun permits. My bad!
My post would have fit better on another thread, but in the bigger picture a lot of the threads deal with 1st and 2nd Amendment issues.

Re: What is the appropriate response to Westboro Baptist??
I've mentioned it before, but I still think its funny that when WBC picketed an NDSU FB game a few years ago, it just happened that the local waste management company sponsored the game and parked two giant, brand-new garbage trucks on display on the pavillion area right in front of the FargoDome. The only place left available for WBC was way off to the side where no one had to get too close.
Ignoring and drowning out ala Patriot Guard is the right answer. They keep everything legal as far as permits and such, and several of Phelp's kids are lawyers, so they'd like nothing better than for some machismo guy to show up and start a fight.

Re: What is the appropriate response to Westboro Baptist??
They are almost never near the event going on. They are always placed well out of the area of the funerals, and so forth that they protest. If you want to be offended by their display you have to drive by them on the street or search them out normally. The thing is that people do search them out to confront them and chide them and get their point out. As I said they usually get what they want because people are too fucking dumb not to fall into their snare.mebison wrote:I've mentioned it before, but I still think its funny that when WBC picketed an NDSU FB game a few years ago, it just happened that the local waste management company sponsored the game and parked two giant, brand-new garbage trucks on display on the pavillion area right in front of the FargoDome. Ahh, I got ya now. Yeah, the permit was to SH about his response that they (WBC) could simply be stopped by that route as if it had not been thought of before.native wrote:I probably read too much into your response to jonboy.Ursus A. Ignoring them will just keep them doing this kind of crap.
What needs to happen is a stealthy group of ass kickers need to show up one day and clean their clocks, really beat their asses into the ground..................then go after their friends, kids and families. Give em what they want, just way more than they ever intended.
After the ass kickings you tell each and everyone of them, anyone of you file a lawsuit, everyone of you loses a kid.
Play fu*king hardball with the street slime and you win. If not they will just keep getting media attention and protesting funerals.

A couple years ago I suggested the GLBT community just hang out with them wherever they go and do what gay pride groups and dance and sing in assless chaps all around them.ALPHAGRIZ1 wrote:Ignoring them will just keep them doing this kind of crap.

Get permits out in the area where they live and make sure that the GLBT's associate closely with them so that everything WBC ever does it is seen as a Gay Pride Parade.

those trucks weren't an accident... that idea came from the student senate (well, a bunch of sitting in the Union during lunch) - when someone mentioned the sponsor was waste management - a couple of us had the idea at the same time - my thought was to put roll-offs between them and the crowd - but the new trucks were a much better idea... the President's office took the suggestion to WM and they loved the opportunity to get their trucks out there.mebison wrote:I've mentioned it before, but I still think its funny that when WBC picketed an NDSU FB game a few years ago, it just happened that the local waste management company sponsored the game and parked two giant, brand-new garbage trucks on display on the pavillion area right in front of the FargoDome. I agree that the WBC should be ignored. When an idiot runs out onto the field during a baseball or football game they aren't shown on TV. This is intended to discourage future idiots.
The networks need to take the same approach with the WBC. Don't show them, and never mention them by name.
