JMU to the Orange Bowl!

Post by SeattleGriz »

First off, huge congratulations to JMU for beating VA Tech.

Secondly, I don't know of a larger scam than Va Tech playing in a BCS Orange Bowl. Sorry, and not to take away from JMU, but losing to an FCS team that didn't even make the playoffs should be immediate exclusion.

Not to mention, they lost to Boise State as well.

Praise be for the real post season system!

As for UCONN, I have long believed it unfair to include the Big East champion in a BCS bowl, because it has been years since such a champion deserved it and because the Mountain West champion didn't get the auto bid, despite every year in perhaps a dozen now being markedly a superior team.

As for Virginia Tech, yes, I understand JMU's feelings here. But, going to the Orange Bowl from the ACC involves winning the ACC championship game and getting to the ACC championship game involves 12 games and not 1 or 2 and how that compares with the other five schools in the particular ACC division.

Are autobids for some conferences fair while others do not get them? At this point, I usually have somebody point out the SEC and I agree, I can't think of a year in the past couple of decades where the SEC champion should not go to a BCS bowl and should not be at least considered for the national championship game. That said, the standard isn't the SEC, as all other conferences would fail. A better solution would be to give a bid to the six conference champions that rank the highest in the final BCS rating, regardless of conference.

That said, if a 16 or 20 team playoff were set up, I would support it. The presidents of the FBS schools for the most part have not wanted such a system. If it is a 4 or 8 team playoff, I don't think much of it.

Thank you for the thoughtful post MJ, but you will soon realize I am a know nothing. I only post the obvious. Much like the guy who picks on the midget in a crowd of tough guys.

I like my opponents weak and...well, weak.

Makes me feel intellectually superior.

Beating a BCS team should be worth 2 wins. Fact. So in retrospect, JMU was actually 7-5. Fact. And with a 7-5 record JMU surely would have gotten into the playoffs over some scrub team like NIU or Delaware. Fact.

By your logic, if JMU actually beat Delaware during the regular season, they'd be 8-4 and looking at a cakewalk of a post-season lineup featuring teams like Lehigh, UNH, and Ga Southern on their way to Chatty, er, Frisco and their 2nd NC win since 2004 over a clearly out-matched EWU. Fact. Wait, by that logic UNH would be hosting Ga Southern for the Frisco trip. Fact.

IF Madison didn't lose the fertile recruiting ground of southeast Virginia to Old Dominion, maybe they would have had enough offense to win a few more games.

With the addition of Old Dominion to the football landscape, the Virginia/Delaware CAA teams are experiencing dilution. This while the northern CAA teams contemplate suicide and moves. Funny, huh?

Dilution of what? Yo bud, we're playing on Jan 7th! Welcome to the party. We've got players from Massachussets (and Vermont) down to Florida. We've got as many verbals from Florida as we do from NJ right now. It's all good.

You can have the mama's boys looking to commute home for Sunday dinner.

If we weren't around, they would be going somewhere else. Examples of Dilution.
<<<Old Dominion received two sizable commitments Thursday when linemen Connor Mewbourne from First Colonial and Josh Mann from Ocean Lakes said they would join the Monarchs. The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Mewbourne, one of the region's top linemen, picked the Monarchs over Richmond and Elon. The 6-4, 280-pound Mann, the region's top center, also had an offer from Delaware and growing interest from William and Mary and Coastal Carolina.>>>

<<<Taylor Heinicke, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound quarterback from Collins Hill High in suburban Atlanta, and David Born, a 6-8, 355-pound left tackle, committed to the Monarchs Sunday. Heinicke, who threw for 4,199 yards and 44 touchdowns with 12 interceptions this past season, picked the Monarchs over Richmond and Georgia State.>>>

None of these kids have Delaware listed on ANY of their Rivals pages or on the recruiting section of GoHens. I'm always amused by the press releases kids (and perhaps Universities) love to make for the local paper about how sought after they were.

How many more years will scholarship fantasy land be operating in Norfolk anyways? When do you guys join the rest of the free world with a normal quantity of offers to make and commits to accept? Is this the last year, or do we have to hear about ODU offering the moon to an entire community in the Tidewater next year too?

5 of 6 commits from South Hampton Roads. Sounds like a very 'collegial' environment. If Wilder gets a job offer elsewhere, should we expect them to hire the coach from Ocean Lakes to steady the ship? Maybe Bethel?

We already have 3 verbals from Offensive Linemen. If Mewbourne had a Richmond offer, I'm guessing that ship sailed when Caleb High verbaled back in November.

I don't know anything about Heinicke but would be surprised if we offered a QB that was only 6-1.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade because ODU obviously has some real good things going, but I think Richmond is going to be OK with ODU around. I can't speak for others.

Just $18 million to each team and more people watching than have watched or will watch every game in the FCS playoff.

Just $18 million to each team, to share with ALL of their conference mates and get held over the barrel by the Bowl Committee to sell over 17,000 tickets at over $100 per head or lose their shirt to the tune of millions, and more people watching than have watched or will watch every game in the FCS playoff.

18 Million divided by 10 or 12 depending on which conference you come from subtracting out whatever tickets to said meaningless bowl game you're on the hook for from allotment but couldn't sell. Don't look now, but you can buy 10 seats directly from Va Tech 5 rows off the field in 139, and it will only cost you nearly $2k! Yippee. OR you could go to stubhub and buy 10 equivalent tickets for 40 percent of the price!

I don't trust anything regarding recruiting. Not Rivals and not the local press. But when coaches can walk out their offices and travel to 60 schools in a 1 hour drive radius, there is a tremendous advantage for building relationships with the HS coaches and players. And when they can bring them in on gameday to see 20k fans tailgating with all the traditional pageantry, it's hard not to believe that we will be taking recruits from other CAA schools.

This is our 4th recruiting class so things are somewhat normal as far as numbers go. The first two classes were somewhat large in order to field a team, but we didn't blow it out like Coastal did. We are "benefitting" from attrition and JUCO graduation now so the recruiting numbers from the first two years are now being recycled to balance things out to a normalized level. In summary, we are at normal levels now.

Regarding the "collegial" environment, yeah we get some kids that are rough around the edges. But Wilder has developed a track record of weeding them out. He pulled a scholarship on a RB before he arrived on campus. He is now at Marshall. He dismissed our first ever recruit for missing too many classes. He is now at JMU. And he just dismissed a couple of decent players for violating team rules. We are a lot closer to other CAA teams than we are to Miami of the '80's. And things will get better once we have upperclassmen leadership from guys that have been in the program for 4 or 5 years. Thus far, our leadership has come from transfers and JUCO's.

You guys are in a good location and have good things happening. I'm merely pointing out, brusquely in some cases :D , that the Tidewater of VA isn't the only place decent high school football get's played, and that your arrival to the scene isn't going to have as big an impact on how everyone recruits (at least not UD) as much as you all would probably like to think.

Sure we'll bump heads over recruits, but while UD has a few good looking kids from VA, it's never been where we butter our bread. A scan of our roster would indicate that. I like that UD has the feelers out up and down the seaboard and we have a diverse team geographically. I'd like to see us do better in Western, PA and Ohio, reach out to TX too.

The collegial comment wasn't directed at the character/intelligence of your kids, just the quantity of very similarly originated guys on your team. It may do good things for area pride to have ODU around, but I think a dependency on local product for your team could be a double edged sword in some ways. Too much home cooking can lead to more challenges than just behavior stuff...it affects your ability to recruit other areas, and a little too much familiar 'kitty' with local coaches (if you pick up what I'm putting down).

I do get a laugh to hear about Mickey going dumpster diving for ODU scraps though. :thumb:
