Earnest Collins named UNC's head coach.
Alcorn head coach Earnest Collins will be returning to Greeley to coach the UNC Bears. He was a star player here in the 90's and has numerous coaching stops along the way. I'm certainly excited about the news! Collins is a great motivator and has a great eye for talent (he recruited Vince Jackson to UNC).

Congrats Bears. It's always cool to have a respected guy come back to the program as a HC.BigSkyBears wrote:Alcorn head coach Earnest Collins will be returning to Greeley to coach the UNC Bears. Re: Earnest Collins named UNC's head coach.
This is a potentially great hire, as long as they don't expect him to hire a staff with country club memberships and free cable TV.
They tried to hire Dave Logan, AKA Mr. All-Colorado everything, to come in and lead the Bears but could not get a contract agreed upon. He was a late addition to the crowd of originally 5 finalists. As soon as his name was mentioned, Breske and that douche from Mines bugged off. That left Collins and Chadron's Bill O'Boyle left in the field.
I thought O'Boyle would be the best hire because he would bring along some long time staff members. Chadron has done a great job competing in division 2 with a fraction of the maximum scholarships allowed. They did not even have the maximum allowed by their conference which is 28. It would have been a like experience dealing with the no money situation in Greeley.
After just having had an e-mail exchange with one of my old team mates and a member of the UNC search committee, I am convinced UNC hired the best candidate out of the field, including Logan. Again, I hope he can afford to hire assistants that can get the job done.
BSB, no more silly ass talk about NAIA coaches, ok?

I must have missed something on the NAIA coach thing but if Wedge thinks it's a good hire then I trust that judgment. I can definitely see the benefits with the Chadron guy but wouldn't the guy coming from Alcorn also have been working the budget constraints that he will be seeing in Greeley?Wedgebuster wrote:This is a potentially great hire, as long as they don't expect him to hire a staff with country club memberships and free cable TV.

he wasn't working with much at Alcorn and did a decent job there. that's two new job openings in the SWAC.Ursus A. Re: Earnest Collins named UNC's head coach.
The cyber rumors to which he was a part on various boards was that Van Diest snuck into Greeley on 12/20 for a secret interview. The hype even resulted in an article in the Helena paper that UNC might be interested in Van Diest.
This interview simply did not happen.
Here is a link to an article on Collins in the Greeley Tribune from about 10 days ago-

Not sure what Alcorn's budget is like, but he was quickly cleaning that squad up from having dwelled in the conference sewers for quite some time.

Oh, and to prove my excitement for the new hire, I tossed a pretty good lump of coin their way about an hour ago. Something I have not done in quite a while, and never to this extent.
They do something exciting next fall, like win about 3 or 4 of those close ones, and I will dig a little deeper.

You must be pretty self-centered to think that your shit is worth anything to somebody...Wedgebuster wrote:Oh, and to prove my excitement for the new hire, I tossed a pretty good lump of poo their way about an hour ago. Something I have not done in quite a while, and never to this extent.

I am too. I just want to see him control of the defense a little better. The 2000-2001 were very aggressive without all the extra shit that cost you 15 yds. every here and there.Grizalltheway wrote:Glad Breske will be sticking around.
Since this about UNC's hire though I'll say I'm glad they didn't hire him away from us.
