Helmet stickers

Here you go small child, this is a sticker to show how well you did today.

Not a big fan of the helmet stickers, but as mentioned by others, I could really care less. The one thing I did like about the College Game Day piece was the way that Florida State issues the stickers... if you fuck up, they take the sticker back. So it's not just a small token to show that you are doing well, if you fumble you lose the sticker... if you throw an INT, you lose the sticker... etc.

My high school used them and I loved it.

Sure, there were players who tried to get as many as they could regardless what it did for the team - and my senior year it cost our team badly because the QB (who actually plays for USD) was all about him.

However, they were a source of program pride. The goal of the team was to get every players helmets as full as possible, even the people who didn't play. They weren't easy to come by either - not like Ohio State who gave Ted Ginn Jr 13 in one game.

Loss the game, no stickers because if you lost, who really gave a shit how well you played....

There are lots of players on a team, and there a lot of squads within that team. In order for a team to win games, they must be proficient in a lot of areas not easily recognized by your average fan, especially when talking all the various special teams squads.

Helmet stickers are used to signify success by these squads and are measured by meeting squad goals, ie Kick Off Squad, in order for members of Kick-Off and cover to earn a sticker, you must hold our opponent to under 20 yards a return. For the Kick Return team, you earn a sticker for averaging over 25 yards per return, ect.

Only the members of the team can fully understand the meaning of the stickers, but the average fan notices there are people other than quarterbacks, running backs and receivers that seem to be getting honored for their play out there.

If you just read the game story and summaries, you could begin to think there are only 3-5 players achieving anything in a game.

I was an offensive lineman, but I also was on all but two special teams. We worked hard to achieve the goal, and the sticker was the affirmation. I wore my helmet stickers proudly, and had more than any of the premidonna backs and recievers, even though I never got a mention in game story lines, or in any media releases.

I don't know what you're having trouble with here Appa since I just said that a team wearing black isn't intimidating to ANYONE in Wa Griz but I can't go further with the explanation.

Montana State is a good team and they did what good teams do. They come in and take a game from ya once in a while.

None of that changes the fact that I don't think stickers a big offense either. They are just a real sissy, pussy kind of thing to treat young fella's playing a rough game like children. The fact that some of them shun that type of thing is commendable. Does the wife give you little stickers when you do good things like not shit all over yourself? If she does then you can look back on those two days and remember it for years to come.

I agree with the unit stickers more than the individual. Never agreed with giving them for TD's to the individual. If anything, you needed to give it to the O-Line for giving the guy the opportunity to score.....

The way ours was set up it never went to just the RB, our team didn't pass more than twice a game so we didn't have to worry about that. The RB would get one, but so would the o-line, lead blockers, etc... The QB wouldn't get one for the TD unless it as an option play and he made a good pitch to get the score.

Each unit for my high school had their own system for getting stars (we used black stars)

I always strived for the simple team 'W' and never focused on individual stats. But that's just me...guess I'm too much of a team player.

And we wonder why so many kids these days are pansies when it comes to team sports.

Talons? In China those are called dinner. 'That guy has many chicken feet on his helmet - he must be a bad ass.

I've heard that back in the 60's EWU players that were ROTC wore black helmets while the rest of the team wore red. Anybody else heard of this or something similar at other schools?

Delaware sort of has helmet sticker - but kind of the reverse. When ever one of our players has contact with his helmet a chip of paint comes off. Seriously, don't know how it is that we can't keep paint on - I know all the hard hits.
