That is another reason I took him off as well. I hate to mention those politics but a FBS transfer needs gaudy numbers to have any real shot.Chemhen wrote:And Hall'd.GannonFan wrote: Doesn't matter - Devlin is unofficially ineligible since he had the temerity to start his college career at a non-FCS school. The whole Payton award thing is a joke. I remember watching 2003 Payton award winner Jamaal Branch and realizing he was too slow to start at Delaware or most other CAA teams.
Eric "What's his name" of UNI came in second in 2007 for the Payton awards while Joe Flacco was not even on the ballot. It is iditotic to vote for a Payton award winner prior to the playoffs as teams from different parts of the country don't to compete against each other.
Flacco was easily the best QB in the country in 2007 but he never got on the ballot. That is all anyone needs to know about the Payton award.

so it is not really about who is the best FCS player. It is about who is the most politically correct player.SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:That is another reason I took him off as well. I hate to mention those politics but a FBS transfer needs gaudy numbers to have any real shot.Chemhen wrote:

Eric Sanders deserved to win the trophy that year.blukeys wrote:GannonFan wrote:

Anyone who was at the UniDome in December 2007 and who had an ounce of objectivity knows that Sanders was not the best quarterback on that field.clenz wrote:Eric Sanders deserved to win the trophy that year.blukeys wrote:

That doesn't mean he didn't deserve the Payton.blukeys wrote:Anyone who was at the UniDome in December 2007 and who had an ounce of objectivity knows that Sanders was not the best quarterback on that field.clenz wrote:Eric Sanders deserved to win the trophy that year.
What he did, and what he was, for that UNI team more than made up for his lack of eye popping stats....
Re: Weekly Payton, Buchanan Outlook- November 8
Fair enough clenz and I stated in the past that Sanders was a gutsy kid.clenz wrote:That doesn't mean he didn't deserve the Payton.blukeys wrote:

I can use your formula for Flacco as well. What Flacco did for the UD team more than made up for eye popping stats. There is no way UD gets to the finals without Flacco. The fact is Sanders came in second in the voting whereas Flacco did not even get on the list. How anyone considers this to be an honest objective assessment is drinking something that I would love to have my hands on. Flacco was obviously the better QB when he and Sanders were on the same field. The Payton is supposed to be for the BEST player in FCS. Sanders in no way is a better football player than Joe Flacco.

Really?3. LB J.C. Sherritt, Eastern Washington, Sr.- 106 TT, 9 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 3 INT, 3 PBU, 2 QBH in 9 games.
What has made his season so impressive with the lack of big numbers in tackles ...
106 TT through 9 games not a big number?
I realize on the Sherritt scale it doesn't stand out, but seems like a pretty big number to me.
That being said, I don't really have an issue with your top 3 or their order. Clearly you know the field better than I do as I primarily follow EWU, thus my admitted bias. I hope it comes down to who finishes the strongest, and JC comes up big for the Eags.

Sanders was better than you are given him credit for.blukeys wrote:Fair enough clenz and I stated in the past that Sanders was a gutsy kid.clenz wrote: That doesn't mean he didn't deserve the Payton.

He holds the all time career record for highest completion percentage at somethng like 69.8%. He threw one INT in the final 150 pass attempts of his career, I believe he also holds the record (or atleast was the highest in the 2005 season) for passing yards in the playoffs. The resaon Sanders didn't get the attention he deserved nationally is because UNI has never been a pass happy team. UNI has pretty much always had at least 2-1 run-pass ratio.
Now, what it a "joke" Flacco didn't get votes? You bet. He was the best pure QB in the FCS during his years, I can't and won't argue that. However, that doesn't mean he was a lock for the award, nor that he should have been.

The award isn't about who is the best prospect. Its about who had the best year, taking into account wins and statistics.
Sure Flacco was a "better" QB. But Sanders was a 4th year starter, with impressive stats on an undefeated #1 ranked team.
