Texas State and UTSA announcements tomorrow

Post by T-Dog »

Word is that Texas State and UTSA have functions scheduled for tomorrow, November 11th which are heavily rumored to announce their accepting the WAC's invitations.

UTSA has to formally present their move to the UT System Board of Regents tomorrow for approval, but it's a formality at this point.

Also, the Worldwide Leader has put this out.

Interesting. UTSA and TS-SM - a couple of hyphen schools.

Are hyphen schools better than directional schools?

Denver makes sense - they didn't fit in the SunBelt.

Just confirming what was assumed for months. Too bad we had to lay a turd in our last true FCS season.

I dunno, we'll find out when PickAState-PickACity plays Central Southeastern PickAState and Upper Northwestern PickAState.

Montana is supposed to decide if they are staying or going by the end of the week too.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

I suppose, for now, they'll still be at 8 for football, as Lamar will replace TXST on the schedule. UTSA has never played football, so that doesn't affect anything.
As for the other sports, they'll likely stay at 10; unless they decide to pursue other options in the future.

WAC membership become "official" on 1 July, 2012, so we'll still be playing FCS next year but will be ineligible for post-season (I believe) because we have accepted the invite.

So Montana decides to stay with the Big Sky Conference.
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/n ... ana-bigsky

President Royce Englestrom cited their desire to...
maintain the cross-state football rivalry with Montana State, he wanted UM to compete against institutions with similar academic missions and he wanted to maintain the prestige and integrity the program has demonstrated over the years.
Translation: We want to stay in the conference we have have been the top dog in since its inception and don't want to move to somewhere where we will be nothing more than the conference doormat and overall laughing stock.

Instead the WAC chooses to admit Texas State, UTSA and University of Denver, both of which have yet to play a football game of any sort.

UTSA has not played a game, but has had Larry Coker on its payroll as head coach since February 2009. There are players on scholarship redshirting this year. The original plan was for two years in the FCS and then in 2013 to begin FBS play anyway. It remains to be seen what kind of team UT-SA will put on the field. But, the WAC needed teams period just to survive.

Denver is not adding football and is being brought into the WAC as a non-football playing member. 8 football and 9 basketball schools are not the best numbers. I think the numbers would work better with 9 football and 10 basketball members, guaranteeing 4 home conference games in football to each school and allowing for 5 sets of traveling partners in basketball. But, they lost three schools and want three schools to replace them.
