Appalachian State Faces Homegrown Test

Post by Appaholic »

ASHEVILLE — Home’s been mighty good to Appalachian State’s football team in recent years

Since 2002, the Mountaineers have won 53 of 56 games played In Boone.

Overflow crowds have turned out for their last 33 games at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

So it’s somewhat ironic that in order for Appalachian State to guarantee itself a share of its sixth straight SoCon title on Saturday, the Mountaineers will need to slow down a guy who grew up in their own backyard.

Eric Breitenstein, formerly a standout for Watauga High, spearheads Wofford’s overpowering rushing attack and leads the SoCon in rushing (1,189 yards, 132.1 per game)

Its things like this that you gotta love about CFB. A chance for Breitenstein to make a statement, knocking off his hometown team :thumb:

It's not his first chance to do so. :coffee:

Pretty sure I remember a game from 2008 in Boone, NC between a top-5 Appalachian State team and a top-5 Wofford team (with Eric Breitenstein) with the SoCon championship on the line. But, Wofford came up short... well, wayyyyyy short. :coffee:

(Breitenstein did have a good game though. Rushed for over 150 yards.)

He was just about the only bright spot for Wooford that night.

I hope your team doesn't have that attitude or the Yosefs will be the ones who comes up wayyyyyyyyyy short.

I have seen both teams this season, and believe me the Apps will be fortunate to come out with a win Saturday afternoon. They are that good.

What's my attitude? I'm not at all confident that we win this game. It's a toss up. I believe we can win it. But, I haven't been running my mouth saying we're going to win or we're going to blow out Wofford or anything. :|

I'm just saying if Wofford wins... it won't be because of any sort of revenge factor with Eric Breitenstein. I'm sick of hearing about that. Though, I'm sure it will be written about an analyzed exhaustively again next year.

I think his grandfather (?) was head coach at App for one season in the 1950's. Bob Breitenstein. Not sure on his dad, but I would believe it.
