Payton, Buchanan Weekly Outlook- Nov. 1

Post by SmallCollegeFBFan »

Here is my weekly outlook. I would love to hear feedback from everyone. Things are starting to play out but anything can still happen with three weeks left.

MY 20 PAYTON WATCH CANDIDATES
QB Matt Barr, Western Illinois, Sr.- 164-262, 2438 yds, 23 TD, 3 INT, 62.6%, 167.4 pass eff., 270.9 yds/gm, 72 carries, 398 yds, 5.5ypc, 5 TD in 9 games.
QB Mike Brown, Liberty, Jr.- 162-250, 2128 yds, 17 TD, 9 INT, 64.8%, 266.0 yds/gm, 104 carries, 546 yds, 5.2ypc, 5 TD in 8 games.
QB Matthew Johnson, Bethune-Cookman, Sr.- 108-164, 1590 yds, 11 TD, 3 INT, 65.9%, 165.8 pass eff., 198.8 yds/gm, 106 carries, 632 yds, 6.0ypc, 7 TD, 79.0 yds/gm in 8 games.

RB Frank Warren, Grambling State, Sr.- 179 carries, 1235 yards, 14 TD, 6.9ypc, 154.4 yds/gm, 16 catches, 131 yds, 8.2ypc, 1 TD, 2 KR, 33 yds in 8 games.
WR Tysson Poots, Southern Utah, Sr.- 71 catches, 1022 yards, 9 TD, 14.4ypc, 113.6 yds/gm in 9 games.
OT Ben Ijalana, Villanova, Sr.

MY TOP 5

1. QB DeAndre Presley, Appalachian State, Jr.- 127-199, 1663 yds, 15 TD, 1 INT, 63.8%, 157.9 pass eff., 207.9 yds/gm, 100 carries, 644 yds, 6.4ypc, 10 TD in 8 games.
Presley doesn’t have as strong of a hold on the number one spot as he hasn’t been as sharp and even threw his first interception of the season this week. However, he still has an impressive ratio and leads the number one team in the nation.

2. RB Taiwan Jones, Eastern Washington, Jr.- 134 carries, 1078 yds, 10 TD, 8.0ypc, 134.8 yds/gm, 16 catches, 290 yds, 18.1ypc, 2 TD, 3 PR, 28 yds, 9.3avg, 11 KR, 224 yds, 20.4avg in 8 games.
While Jones doesn’t leave the nation in rushing and he has missed time due to injury, he has shown the last two weeks that he is the most explosive player in FCS. His speed, versatility, and big play ability make him likely to finish as high as number two if he keeps this up and I project he will so therefore I moved him up.

3. QB Matt Barr, Western Illinois, Sr.- 164-262, 2438 yds, 23 TD, 3 INT, 62.6%, 167.4 pass eff., 270.9 yds/gm, 72 carries, 398 yds, 5.5ypc, 5 TD in 9 games.
Barr has WIU ranked and looking good to get in the playoffs at this point and is coming off a gaudy performance. His 23-3 ratio, 167.4 pass efficiency rating, and 28 total touchdowns make him a good looking top three vote getter.

4. QB Jeremy Moses, Stephen F. Austin, Sr.- 232-371, 2618 yds, 23 TD, 3 INT, 62.5%, 140.7 pass eff., 327.2 yds/gm, 11 carries, -60 yds in 8 games.
With their loss this past week Moses is not looking as attractive as he has been. He is below Barr in both pass efficiency and total touchdowns while his completion percentage is lower as well. He should still finish in the top five but is no longer a lock to finish in the top three and there is a good chance he won’t, if Barr keeps up his recent play.

5. RB Nate Eachus, Colgate, Jr.- 235 carries, 1295 yds, 14 TD, 5.5ypc, 161.9 yds/gm, 12 catches, 115 yds, 9.6ypc in 8 games.
Eachus leads the nation in rushing and we all know how the nation’s leading rusher is likely to finish in the top five. His 5.5 yards per carry and 14 touchdowns land him fifth on my ballot as of today.

My thoughts:

The only reason Scott Riddle fell out of the top five is the injury but it would still not surprise me to see him finish in the top five because of his career achievements. Coleman was dropped after throwing five interceptions and potentially killing their chances at a playoff berth. Mike Brown leads the nation in total offense while Josh McGregor leads the nation in pass efficiency and have become definite names on the short list of preseason front runners for next year.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
QB Sean Brackett, Columbia, Soph.- 108-179, 1405 yds, 16 TD, 3 INT, 60.3%, 152.4 pass eff., 200.7 yds/gm, 102 carries, 330 yds, 3.2ypc, 2 TD in 7 games.
QB B.J. Coleman, Chattanooga, Jr.- 168-289, 2257 yds, 21 TDs, 12 INT, 58.1%, 139.4 pass eff., 282.1 yds/gm, 34 carries, 4 yds, 4 TD in 8 games.
QB Thomas DeMarco, Old Dominion, Jr.- 183-321, 2002 yds, 17 TD, 11 INT, 57.0%, 120.0 pass eff., 250.2 yds/gm, 96 carries, 296 yds, 3.1ypc, 6 TD in 8 games.
QB Ronnie Fouch, Indiana State, Jr.- 135-229, 1762 yds, 15 TD, 3 INT, 59.0%, 142.6 pass eff., 220.2 yds/gm, 24 carries, -83 yds in 8 games.
QB Cameron Higgins, Weber State, Sr.- 162-282, 1930 yds, 13 TD, 11 INT, 57.4%, 122.3 pass eff., 241.2 yds/gm, 18 carries, 32 yds, 1.8ypc, 1 TD in 8 games.
QB Justin Roper, Montana, Sr.- 143-231, 1539 yds, 18 TD, 8 INT, 61.9%, 136.7 pass eff., 171.0 yds/gm, 40 carries, 93 yds, 2.3ypc, 1 TD in 9 games.
QB Brad Sorensen, Southern Utah, Soph.- 208-314, 2484 yds, 16 TD, 4 INT, 66.2%, 147.0 pass eff., 276.0 yds/gm, 57 carries, 25 yds, 2 TD in 9 games.
RB Jordan Brown, Bryant, Soph.- 195 carries, 1044 yds, 5.4ypc, 11 TD, 130.5 yds/gm, 10 catches, 129 yds, 12.9ypc, 1 TD, 3 PR, 144 yds, 48.0avg, 2 TD, 9 KR, 197 yds, 21.9avg in 8 games.
RB Gino Gordon, Harvard, Sr.- 108 carries, 804 yds, 7.4ypc, 6 TD, 114.9 yds/gm, 9 catches, 102 yds, 11.3ypc in 7 games.
RB Bryan Hilliard, Sacramento State, Jr.- 187 carries, 862 yds, 11 TD, 4.6ypc, 107.8 yds/gm, 3 catches, 17 yds, 5.7avg in 8 games.
RB Nick Schwieger, Dartmouth, Jr.- 158 carries, 778 yds, 7 TD, 4.9avg, 129.7 yds/gm, 20 catches, 146, 7.3ypc in 6 games.
WR Joel Bradford, Chattanooga, Jr.- 66 catches, 1027 yds, 15.6ypc, 7 TD, 128.4 yds/gm, 1 carry, -10 yds, 6 PR, 68 yds, 11.3avg in 8 games.
WR Chris Summers, Liberty, Jr.- 62 catches, 835 yds, 12 TD, 13.5ypc, 104.4 yds/gm in 8 games.
WR Raymond Webber, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Sr.- 71 catches, 1019 yds, 8 TD, 14.4ypc, 127.4 yds/gm in 8 games.

LB D.J. Smith, Appalachian State, Sr.- 82 TT, 3 TFL, 1 sack, 1 INT, 3 PBU, 2 QBH, 1 FR in 8 games.

CB Korey Lindsey, Southern Illinois, Sr.- 28 TT, 2.5 TFL, 5 PBU in 8 games.
FS Mark LeGree, Appalachian State, Sr.- 37 TT, 5 INT, 5 PBU in 8 games.
SS Eugene Clifford, Tennessee State, Sr.- 58 TT, 0.5 TFL, 0.5 sack, 4 INT, 6 PBU in 8 games.

MY TOP 5

There is a lot of movement in my projected top five this week.

1. DT Kenrick Ellis, Hampton, Sr.- 72 TT, 12 TFL, 2 sacks, 4 QBH, 2 FR, 1 FF in 7 games.
Ellis moves into the top spot as he continues to dominate week in and week out. His numbers would be even more impressive had he not missed their first game. Ellis is a monster and is no doubt having the biggest impact on a defense of any player in the nation. With nobody pulling away from the rest of the pack as there has been in previous years it is still wide open.

2. LB J.C. Sherritt, Eastern Washington, Sr.- 106 TT, 9 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 3 INT, 3 PBU, 2 QBH in 9 games.
Sherritt’s numbers aren’t gaudy like last year but he is eighth nationally in total tackles (106). He has played well and is the top player on their defense. Still, his reputation should see him finish no worse than third or fourth if he plays well and could still win it.

3. DE Ameet Pall, Wofford, Jr.- 37 TT, 16.5 TFL, 10.5 sacks, 6 QBH, 1 FR, 1 FF in 8 games.
Pall is having a great season leading a Wofford team that has risen from unranked all the way into the top 10 and has become a sleeper national title contender. He is second nationally in sacks (10.5) and fourth in tackles for loss (16.5). If Wofford upsets App State and he stays at or near the top of the national rankings he should become an attractive vote getter.

4. LB Tyler Holmes, UMASS, Jr.- 85 TT, 11 TFL, 4 sacks, 3 INT, 1 PBU, 2 FF in 8 games.
Holmes leads a sold UMASS defense who has played pretty well outside of the debacle against UNH. He is a fast, explosive player who makes plays in both the running and pass game. He is barely holding on though as several players are making a push for the top five.

5. DE Jabari Fletcher, Appalachian State, Sr.- 40 TT, 11.5 TFL, 7 sacks, 1 INT, 3 PBU, 8 QBH, 3 FR/returned one for TD, 1 FF in 8 games.
While LeGree is their best NFL prospect and the only two-time first-team All-American Fletcher has had the biggest impact of late with back to back player of the week awards from the SoCon and rumbling 40 yards for a touchdown to help seal their win over Furman on Saturday. He is becoming a legit candidate to finish in the top three if he keeps up his recent play.

My thoughts:

There is still a lot that can happen with the Buchanan Award and it should be very interesting to see who pulls away at the end, if anyone does. It would not be surprising to see no definite front runner going into the voting as we have had in the last few years. Pough, Charles, and Glazier move into the top 20 as Pough leads the nation in tackles for loss, Charles is the most consistent for SFA, and Glazier leads the nation in total tackles. Jabara Williams fell off due to his injury, Eddy was dropped due to recent play, and Rogers falls off as Richmond is struggling and does not warrant two candidates on the list at this point.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
DE Coulter Boyer, North Dakota Sate, Jr.- 37 TT, 8 TFL, 1 sacks, 3 PBU, 6 QBH, 3 FR, 1 FF in 8 games.
DE Erik Clanton, The Citadel, Sr.- 53 TT, 12 TFL, 8 sacks, 1 QBH, 1 FR, 3 FF in 9 games.
DE Chris Donald, Chattanooga, Jr.- 43 TT, 12 TFL, 7 sacks, 1 QBH, 2 FR, 4 FF in 8 games.
DE Preston Pemasa, Gardner-Webb, Fr.- 45 TT, 10.5 TFL, 5.5 sacks, 9 QBH, 1 FR, 1 FF in 8 games.
DE Zack Nash, Sacramento State, Jr.- 27 TT, 10 TFL, 8 sacks, 2 QBH, 5 FF in 8 games.
DE Ben Obaseki, Indiana State, Soph.- 48 TT, 14.5 TFL, 8 sacks, 1 PBU, 3 QBH, 1 FR, 1 FF, 1 SAF in 8 games.

Do a player's stats in playoffs games up until the championship game factor into the decision? If not, do you think TJ still has a chance to win it? Also, would the fact that TJ has put up the numbers he has despite missing almost two full games factor into the judges decision?

I guess Jones still has another year if he doesn't win the Payton this year. His numbers would be massive if he hadn't missed what equates to two games. He is a threat to break one literally every time he touches the ball. 200 rushing yards against Portland State - in the first half. Only got a couple carries in the second half of that game, but they wisely pulled him. If he stays healthy next year he should be favored to win it, and he could still have a chance this year. The Big Sky hasn't had a running back win the award in quite some time.

Saw this on youtube. It's missing quite a few big runs he's had, but not bad overall. The one against Sac State towards the end is pretty sick.

I still think Sherritt has a very good chance to win the Buchanan this year. 2nd in total voting last year, which I am sure will be on people's minds. Like you said, his numbers aren't quite as huge as last year, but this is in large part because EWU's defense is better all-around this year and the injuries haven't hit us as hard, particularly in the LB corp.

Hell, I think both of them should win it, but of course I'm slightly biased. ;)

Funny is'nt it that Matt Barr is not even listed as a candidate on the Sportsnetwork website. The injury he sustained last year killed the season for the Leathernecks who were already in a bit of a turmoil in regards to Coach Patterson's situation. He did have a huge game against SHst and was NPOW because of it. He is once again the NPOW and I truly hope that his name is added in the very near future.

Kyle Glazier is also not listed and he happens to be leading the nation in tackles. WIU was linebacker U for a couple of years with Milton and Hartwell both winning the Buchanan Award. Funny how a 1-10 season really puts you underneath everyone's radar.

Nice job with the data you have supplied! Looks like a lot of work to me!

Does the opponent have any sway? TJ had 12 for 145 on the ground, and 2 catches for 92 and a touchdown (basically long handoffs) against Nevada.

I would say opponent should matter. Matt Barr had 286 yards passing against Purdue for 1 touchdown! Had 8 rushes for 37 yards but got sacked a couple of times. I would think that stats in the Missouri Valley Conference would be stats in the Big Sky and visa versa! Of course, the way the people in the east see it, neither would stack up to the CAA!

Playoffs are not factored in. Votes are due before the playoffs start.

I think he has a shot to finish high in thing, as I told you before. If he stays healthy and Presley doesn't start playing better or Barr does not keep it up I believe Jones should be in most people's top 2 or 3.

Hell, I think both of them should win it, but of course I'm slightly biased. ;)
I don't think Ellis will win the award but I put him number one this week to make a statement. He really needs to be considered and given looks. He has taken games over more than any other defender I have seen so far.

Both races really are wide open I think. There is no definite winner like we have had with Armanti Edwards, Greg Peach, Arthur Moats, etc. the last few years.

WTF is with all the QB's in there? I mean, seriously, Payton was a RB. It's a disservice to the person for whom the award was named to have a zillion QB's in there. And WR's? These are the guys that make the QB's look good.

And why are you not considering Jabara Williams from SFA? He's been on the watch list all year

The game has evolved quite a bit...

Most QB's at the college level are as much as RB's as the RB's on the team are. Takes carries away from RB's and boosts the QB's numbers.

It's even harder for a WR to make the list because he's one of 3-4 other targets a QB has throughout a game. For every TD a WR on a team has, the QB also has one, and it's likely not all his TD passes are going to that receiver. For every yard that WR has...well, you get the idea.

Then maybe they should have a separate award just for the QBs. I think someone suggested that way back.

Closest thing you can get for FCS is All-American awards I guess. :|

Some great runs on that video. I especially like the fact that he never turns around to taunt the other team, although he definitely has the skills to justify doing so. :notworthy:

Yeah, that's one of the many things fans and coaches love about him. He's extremely humble about his skill and performance on the field. All he cares about is helping the team get a win. Not to mention he's tough as nails and gives it his all on every play. Like Baldwin has said in an interview... you practically have to take his helmet away to keep him off the field. :notworthy:

Just the way the game has changed but even with that said there are 8 RBs and 10 QBs. Not like there are 13 QBs and just 4 RBs or something.

I took Jabara off mine this week because of the injury. If he plays and does well this week I will put him back on.

IMO, he is the most talented running back in FCS. If I had to rank those at the top of NCAA rushing list I would say 1. Taiwan Jones 2. Frank Warren 3. Nate Eachus 4. Kyle Minett 5. Eric Breitenstein

Andre Pierce, Henry Harris, Nick Schwieger, Gino Gordon, and Mike Mayhew are all very good backs likely to be in All-America discussion as well.

 Baldwin wouldn't tolerate that kind of stuff anyway, but from the interviews I've listened to and what I've heard about the guy, he understands humility - gives credit to his o-line and receivers for making blocks down field.
