Lets see if anyone can make any sense out of this... it could just be that its 3am so I aint getting it...


CAA TIE BREAKERS:

4.01 The team with the best conference record based on win-loss percentage shall represent the Conference as the NCAA
automatic qualifier.

4.02 In the event of a tie, the following tie-breaker format will be utilized to determine the Conference automatic qualifier.

4.03 Tie-Breaking formats.
1. Head-to-head competition. If three-or-more teams are involved in a tie and all have played each other, the win-loss percentage is computed using each team’s record against the tied teams as a group rather than individually.
2. Win-loss percentage versus the highest-placed common opponents and proceeding down. When arriving at another set of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record against the tied teams as a group rather than individually.
3. Number of conference road wins.
4. Coin Toss.

4.04 Tie-Breaker Operating principles.
1. All ties are broken in descending order.
2. Once a team has been eliminated at any point, the process reverts back to the beginning with the remaining tied teams.



Now lets assume...

UNH wins out and finishes 8-3 (6-2)
W&M loses to UNH and UNC and finishes 8-3 (6-2)
Delware loses to Villanova and finishes 9-2 (6-2)
Villanova loses to UNH and finishes 8-3 (6-2)
UMass only loses to Delaware and finishes 7-4 (5-3)
JMU loses to Umass and W&M and finishes 6-5 (3-5)
Richmond loses to JMU, Villanova and W&M and finishes 5-6 (3-5)
Maine loses to Umass and JMU and finishes 4-7 (3-5)
URI loses to Villanova, Richmond and Umass and finishes 3-8 (2-6)
Towson loses out and finishes 1-10 (0-8)

Who wins the auto qualifier in this scenerio???? If the tie breaker got to the road wins in conference it looks like Villanova gets the auto bid as they would tie with Delaware but then would revert back to head to head... but its the tie breaker just before it that has me confused.

This description could use some further clarification on what to do when teams don't play each other (particularly for common games), but here's how I think it would go…


1. Skip combined H2H because UNH doesn't play Delaware.

2. Skip common games vs. UMass because they don't play Nova.

3. Use common games vs. the 3-5 tie—UNH eliminated because they are 2-1 while the others are 3-0.

4. Use combined H2H between the remaining three 6-2 teams—W&M gets the auto because they are 2-0.



It seems clear that, for combined H2H, everyone must play each other or it can't be used (UNH would be 2-0, but didn't play Delaware). I believe that, for common games, everyone must play the common opponent. I'm also assuming that, when looking at common games against a lower tie, everyone in the first tie must play everyone in the common games tie or it gets skipped. The description is a little vague, though, so I'm not 100% sure if I'm right on the last scenario.

Um Travis... it falls under the category of "Who cares?". All four are going to the playoffs and the selection committee has shown before that they don't care who the AQ is when it comes to seeding and pairings.

Couldn't agree more. Amazing how much time people care to spend on determing who gets the official AQ when the teams involved are all going to the playoffs and the AQ has no bearing on the awarding of seeds. It just doesn't matter.

This is used all the time in Big South Basketball, so I'm familiar with it.

1. Radford
2. CCU
3. VMI
4. Liberty
4. G-W

Liberty and G-W are tied for the last home playoff spot, and it needs to be broken. Both teams played Radford, and both lost, so we move down. Both played CCU, and both lost, we move down. Both played VMI, LU won, G-W didn't, LU gets the tie breaker.

The instance of "When arriving at another set of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record against the tied teams as a group rather than individually" would be...

1. A
2. B
3. C
4. D
4. E
6. F
7. G
8. H
8. I
10. J

In this example, H and I are tied for the last playoff spot. They both lost to A, B, and C. however, H beat D and lost to E, whereas I lost to both D and E. So because H is 1-1 against D-E, they get the tiebreaker.

Hope that helps. In your example, all the 6-2 teams would compare who did the best against the 5-3 teams, assuming the 6-2 teams played the 5-3 teams, and move down the list from there.
