Historically, this is usually a close game and the victor is usually the home team. GW had other thoughts today. QB Chandler Browning took control of the offense after CSU was able to kick a field goal to open the game. Chandler had a good game going [10 of 11 for 106 yds] until he left in the 3rd Quarter due to injury.
John Rock came off the bench for the first time in 2 games to complete 7 passes for 104 yds.
GWU gained 419 yards on 71 plays Saturday, and scored as many points as it had in the previous three games, including several big plays in a balanced afternoon. The Dogs gained 209 yards on the ground and 210 through the air and owned an edge in time of possession. Patrick Hall accounted for 129 rushing yds.
Blount ran for 33 yards on eight carries and caught three passes for 39 yards out of the backfield in a solid all-around effort. Miller hauled in four passes for 64 yards and James Perry added four catches for 38 yards to pace the receiving corps.
Turnovers are lots of fun when you are on the receiving end of them. Turnovers are even more fun when the D becomes the O marching down the field for lots of yardage. Here, Gianni Olivas [Fr.] tries to return the int to the house with the help of his teammates. He didn't make it, but the D looked good trying.
Gerald Stevenson is as good as advertised and he is as good as Tim Maypray at VMI last year. Yesterday, Stevenson shattered the Charleston Southern and Big South all-purpose yardage record with 389 yards, including two kickoff returns for touchdowns. He had another kickoff return that was voided by a holding penalty. For future Big South opponents and your coaches - you kick the ball to Gerald Stevenson at your own personal peril. He really is this good. If he was not on the field yesterday, GW would have won this game handily. Here is Gerald making my son look stupid on a punt return.
Coach Patton spent a large portion of the game having pleasant conversations with the zebras. [CSU had 14 penalties for 120 yds!] Mostly, they chatted about their favorite lowcountry restaurants when Coach Patton wasn't screaming at them for missing obvious penalties. Towards the end of the game, Coach Patton went postal when CSU went for it on 4th down and came up way short. One of the refs blew an inadvertent whistle that enabled CSU to have another down after GW's O had already taken the field. Coach Patton coolly told his D that they were going to have to retake the field and win this game again.
The Runnin’ Bulldog defense was stout, allowing just 282 yards and one offensive score by the Bucs. Dami Teniola led the way with 12 tackles, and was joined in double figures by Bryce Nixon (11 hits) and Lyndrez Leslie (11 hits). Preston Pemasa added five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and his fifth sack of the season.
Charleston Southern quarterback Andrew Trudnowski was held to just 13-of-39 passing (33.3 percent) for 132 yards, one touchdown, an interception and two sacks. Stevenson had 65 yards rushing, 47 yards receiving, a 32-yard punt return and his 243 yards on kickoff returns. Here's Andrew sharing a light moment on the sidelines with AJ Toscano during the game. I'm sorry that AJ had his college career cut short by injury.
Gardner-Webb will return home next weekend to host Presbyterian at 1:30 pm on Saturday, October 23. The game will mark the team's first home appearance since September 18. I never thought I would get excited about getting back to Boiling Springs.
