2010 At-Large Eligibility

Post by UNHWildCats »

October 16, 2010: As of the final scores tonight 67 teams remain eligible for an at-large birth in the 2010 FCS Playoffs. Not including the Ivy League and SWAC 49 teams remain eligible for an at-large bid.

Jacksonville State is the first team to lock up at-large eligibility.

After next weeks games, six team will definitely be eliminated because of match-ups between teams both one loss from elimination. This brings the total of remaining at-large eligible teams to 43 no matter what happens next week.

Another 17 teams face elimination on top of the guaranteed 6 eliminations. If all 17 of these teams were to be eliminated next week, only 26 eligible teams would remain, or 34 if we count the Ivy League and SWAC.

thanks for doing the graphical representation of this again this year. 'tis always a handy reference.
perhaps you can make some kind of notation if a team locks up a conference AQ as well, as that removes them from at-large contention too (but not in a negative way). Perhaps you've done that in previous years already, I can't remember.

Anyhow, one small correction: Two of Indiana State's wins have come against non-DI opponents, so their next loss knocks them out of at-large contention.

no worries, just trying to help out.
also, on a minor proofreading note, you have an extra 'e' in "Southwestern Athletic"

I thought 8-3 was the magic number, or has it changed to 7-4 with a 20 team playoff? Or did the Ole Miss win give us some kind of bonus point?

Not that it really matters 'cause we're not making the post-season, but isn't ODU two games away from being eliminated? We're 3-3 and have 5 games left. If the magic mark is 7, we need to lose two more for elimination.

Georgia State is the same, unless Lamar and South Alabama don't count for qualification purposes. If so, then you're right. Otherwise, GSU has 4 FCS wins right now with 4 games remaining. They need to lose two to be disqualified (again, assuming the magic mark is 7).

Thanks for this btw!

McNeese may or may not already be out. I'm confused. If Lamar does not count as a DI win then they are out. 2-4 with 5 games left.

Lamar is a new program not a transitioning program, they count as a Div I win.

This is a mistake on my part. I accidentally confused North Carolina Central and Winston Salem State's status. WSSU ended its Div I transition, I inadvertently used that status on North Carolina Central, I will fix all effected teams.

The playoff committee has always required 7 division I wins to be eligible for an at-large bid. (they do leave some wiggle room so that they could potentially take a 6-win team, if there are no qualified alternatives, but I don't believe that has ever happened).

Of course, getting 7 wins doesn't guarantee you a spot by any means (nor does 8 wins, necessarily).

Sure there may be some autobids with only 6 DI wins, but I don't think there will ever be a 6-DI-win at-large bid - unless of course, the playoffs are expanded well past the current already expanded post-season tournament.

I agree. But they've always worded it in the bylaws/playoff handbook/whatever so that they still could have that option if they ever felt it necessary.

But I thought we weren't eligible for the playoffs one way or another anyway?

It will certainly be interesting if both Dayton and JU finish up 10-1, (9-1 FCS). Maybe the PFL gets two at large bids this year. Wow!

Georgia State is a new program just like Old Dominion right? So long as you get 7 Div I wins you could be selected for an at-large bid, however with the weak first year schedule there is absoloutely no way Georgia State would be selected, even if there was no other 7 Div I teams, they would select a 6 Div I win team over them.

wont happen. they would take a 6 Div I win team before they take two Pioneer teams. Sorry, but the strength of schedule is just too weak to justify a second team.

TexasTramp posted on AGS that he has confirmation Lamar and Georgia State dont count as Div I wins this year so I will have to make some adjustments, though it makes no sense why they wouldnt count.

GA State would fall under that rule that was set up for the NEC a couple of years ago where they could be considered if they were ranked high enough and so forth I think. That is very unlikely to happen.

I wouldn't exactly call their schedule weak with Jacksonville State...and 'Bama on there (pretty sure that makes up for everyone else on the schedule), but I get your point.

And yeah GSU fans, you are eligible. ODU was eligible...I don't see why wouldn't be. I think the rule is that if you were under the Division 1 banner, and you're not transitioning to FBS, then you're eligible. It's a widely believed myth on CS.com, CAAzone, (and probably AGS) that we weren't eligible. Absolutely not true...our coaches said we were and so did the papers, and I believe them more than some posters on a message board. Here are some quotes from ODU's last season (and this absolutely applies to GSU too):
"Our goal in scheduling is to primarily play schools in the Football Championship Subdivision, so that we'll be playoff eligible in 2009." said Wilder. "We anticipate announcing additional home dates for our first season in the near future, with the goal of playing six home games per year."

Rich Radford wrote:After a week off, ODU will close out its season on the road. Could the Monarchs go to Lexington with playoff hopes dancing in their heads? Not likely, but despite being a first-year program, ODU is eligible for an at-large berth to the FCS playoffs if deemed worthy. The Keydets are picked sixth in the preseason Big South poll.
