CA Envirowhackos Caught Fabricating Pollution Data

Overestimate fueled state's landmark diesel law

Wyatt Buchanan, Chronicle Sacramento Bureau

California grossly miscalculated pollution levels in a scientific analysis used to toughen the state's clean-air standards, and scientists have spent the past several months revising data and planning a significant weakening of the landmark regulation, The Chronicle has found.

The pollution estimate in question was too high - by 340 percent, according to the California Air Resources Board, the state agency charged with researching and adopting air quality standards. The estimate was a key part in the creation of a regulation adopted by the Air Resources Board in 2007, a rule that forces businesses to cut diesel emissions by replacing or making costly upgrades to heavy-duty, diesel-fueled off-road vehicles used in construction and other industries.

The staff of the powerful and widely respected Air Resources Board said the overestimate is largely due to the board calculating emissions before the economy slumped, which halted the use of many of the 150,000 diesel-exhaust-spewing vehicles in California. Independent researchers, however, found huge overestimates in the air board's work on diesel emissions and attributed the flawed work to a faulty method of calculation - not the economic downturn.

The overestimate, which comes after another bad calculation by the air board on diesel-related deaths that made headlines in 2009, prompted the board to suspend the regulation this year while officials decided whether to weaken the rule.
Musta been faulty Chinese made slide rulers...

...a walk down memory lane...

Upheaval at the California Air Resources Board

3 July 2007

http://www.greencarcongress.com/2007/07 ... t-the.html
The off-road regulations are intended to help address these non-attainment areas.

The California Air Resources Board (ARB)—the state organization chartered with providing safe, clean air to Californians and thus the group tasked with implementing the state’s advanced air pollution and greenhouse gas regulations—has been in turmoil recently.

Last week, ARB Chairman Dr. Robert Sawyer told the Los Angeles Times that he had been fired by Governor Schwarzenegger for refusing to follow orders to limit the number of immediate greenhouse gas regulations (earlier post), and for refusing to fire Air Resources Board Executive Officer Catherine Witherspoon.

“I was fired, I did not resign...The entire issue is the independence of the board, and that’s why I got fired,” Sawyer said in a telephone interview with The Times.

Sawyer said he had declined to fire the agency’s embattled executive director, Catherine Witherspoon, and objected when his longtime communications director Jerry Martin was also fired, then reassigned to another agency by the governor’s office without notifying him. Finally, last week, he said he was called by a Cabinet secretary who ordered him to limit to three the number of so-called early action measures the board was considering to slow global warming.

...Sawyer, ignoring the order he had received, unsuccessfully sought to persuade fellow board members to add more measures to the list.

The Los Angeles Times linked the upheaval partly to pressure on the Governor’s office from the state’s construction industry over the upcoming issuance of stringent off-road diesel emission rules, still currently under development.

...Under the regulation, diesel PM emissions from existing offroad diesel vehicles would decrease by 92% from the 2000 baseline. The regulation is expected to reduce diesel PM emissions by 5.2 tons per day (tpd) and NOx emissions by 48 tpd in 2020.

The cumulative PM and NOx emissions reductions from 2010 to 2030 are expected to prevent approximately 4,000 premature deaths and tens of thousands of cases of asthma-related and other lower respiratory symptoms.

The ARB estimates that there will be significant health cost savings of $18 to $26 billion over this time period, primarily from avoided premature deaths. ARB estimates the total cost of the regulations is expected to be between $3.0 and $3.4 billion, in 2006 dollars. The state’s construction companies say it could be at least three times that amount.
Huh...

...$9 billion in economic losses to support a lie.

You gotta gree that ALL these such problems go back to one thing - we are overpopulating our planet. More and more people need fossil fuels and chemicals every hour and you're concerned about costs to taxpayers.

This law was supposed to save millions/billions of dollars mainly through the prevention of premature deaths. So, a law designed to save the planet by preventing premature deaths is actually killing the planet because there are too many people? :ugeek:

Never ceases to amaze me how these fucks try to hide their greed in the "advancement of man and the economy" bs. They're just greedy fucks, plain and simple, who only think short term, selfishly, and fail to appreciate the concept that the environment is worth more healthy than polluted with plastic, oil and strip malls.

Assholes should go to China and try to breath there or swim in a river. No Clean Air Act there. No EPA there. They will die in their own shit.

As long as the Tbags of the world are kept in check, we will actually have something beautiful to give to future generations, other that floating islands of plastic the size of Texas and oil filled beaches.

The only thing you're passing on to future generations with your short-sighted, disingenuous rhetoric is a world which abandoned technology and industry, responsible for all the great quality-of-life developments, for a neo-feudal world of elitists and the poverty-stricken who apathetically followed their demagoguery.

Yeah, whatever John Galt. Time to put Atlas Shrugged away for a while. Give it (your greed and short-sightedness) a rest. Great book with great ideas but the health of planet is more important than more and more industry and technology and people.

The planet is a closed system and can only handle so many trains, shitting babies, chemical plants, automobiles, oil rigs and fertilizer/pesticide plants and logging camps.

The irony being that a lack of regulation, the ideal of perpetual growth/progress, and the resulting overconsumption is what's going to lead to de-industialization.

The bad new's is your children and grandchildren will probably die a horrible death due to war (over water or oil) or cancer related to pollution or some type of chemical/nuclear disaster.

I call it "nth degree extremism". If the underlying principle is sound, implementation has no limit.

When liberal government is the body responsible for implementation, politics (money/power) creates the ever-expanding boundary.

CA has become the petri dish for such extremism.

Manufacturers of basic needs are quashed under nonsensical environmental regulation:
Bakers, farmers, lumber mills are required to install multi-million dollar "air scrubbers" that remove CO2 (...necessary to prevent climatological cataclysm. Only one problem: The laws enchaptering the scrubbers were passed years BEFORE the scientific community had published any peer-reviewed studies concluding CO2's correlation with climatological change). Chemical producers are vilified for "destroying the environment", absent facts to support such claims. Developers are targeted by land-use advocates bent on creating a society of hut-dwelling "locavore" sheep imprisoned in communities demarcated not only by the distance a person can walk to/from in a single day, but moreso, to create "tribal" definitions which are used to distract the sheep. Social culture is censored to further government agenda. Freedoms (as well as essential commodities: energy, water...)are re-defined as "privileges" assigned by government proclamation, then gradually weighted using "social engineering" education to create the perception those freedoms harm the "greater good"...before the freedom is restricted, then outlawed, only later to be returned to a specific "class" whose "needs" require said "privilege" (...and have the means to pay for the privilege)..."for the greater good".
All of these oppressive mechanisms are routinely monitored and regulated by government, for a "fee", with draconian penalties for "offenders".

The methods are endless. They are real. They're happening today, in the United States.

The enigmatic D1B rails against "Mother Church" "mythological" religion and it's well documented uses to confine, oppress and control the human spirit for nefarious purpose, while mindlessly selling government's and secular elitists' (the true "greedy") designs to achieve the same goals.

D1B asserts the problem is the absence of probative judgement, I assert the problem is an absence of enlightenment and truth.
