Re: Rich Ellerson Not Exciting Me Reply
I don't get excited about Rich Ellerson either. I'm concerned about long-time Div 1AA/FCS coaches to begin with (Ellerson has been HC at Cal Poly for 8 years). Western 1AA/FCS teams are a notch down from East Coast & Midwest Div 1AA/FCS teams. Other than the Univ. of Montana, the top teams in the Div 1AA/FCS playoffs routinely are from the Colonial (former Atlantic 10), Southern and Missouri Valley conferences.
In 8 years at Div 1AA/FCS, Ellerson's Cal Poly team only made the playoffs twice. This year his team was knocked out in the first round.
Honestly Todd Berry had more success in Div 1AA/FCS than Ellerson has, and Berry's Illinois State team played in the much tougher Missouri Valley Conference.
Also, Ellerson's star QB this year was a senior and two year starter. But he was recruited from a community college. Sorry, but this is the BIG problem with most Div 1AA/FCS coaches-- they rely on junior college and Div 1A/FBS transfers to recruit their talent. Because scholarships are even more limited at Div 1AA/FCS schools (versus Div 1A/FBS), they use their scholarships on guys who only have 2 or 3 years of eligibility left so the scholarships aren't tied up as long and because after seeing them play for a year or two at a JC or Div 1A program, they have a better idea of whether they are worth giving the scholarship to. And because the NCAA transfer rules allow Div 1A/FBS players to transfer to Div 1AA/FCS schools and play the next year without sitting out, this is an interesting option for players who don't like the situation at their current Div 1A school.
However, these recruiting options don't work for USMA! We need a coach who excels at recruiting top high school candidates.
Seriously what a dumbass. Its quite apparent that this guy doesnt know a single thing about the FCS or about anything to deal with Cal Poly or their program.

East Coast Bias...or stupidity. Funny how fans of a 3-9 team can complain that a coach only made the playoffs twice! This from a conference w/o and auto bid and that they would rather have the coach from Illinois State. Obviously they didn't remember the Wisconsin game as there is NO WAY IN HELL Ill. St could have come close to beating the Badgers.

But remember, West Point alums come from all 50 states and territories...there's not one area bias from the military schools...

Funny Appa
At least he knew enough to mention Montana
. I just think his knowledge is limited as far as Poly. He never mentioned that Ellerson had 2 Buchanan award winners that are playing on Sundays and will have a receiver drafted. coaching a military academy is akin to coaching at Notre Dame or Stanford. Admission standards wil limit the kids you can bring in but I think Ellerson will do just fine.

I follow Army quite a bit since my cousin went there, and I can say I'm excited to see what he can do there.
