New Conference For Youngstown State: Suggestions?

Post by Cap'n Cat »

I throw a lot of poop at YSU, but I do respect their fans and program in real life.

Youngstown is the odd man out in our grand conference in which, if there is going to be expansion, it will be to the south and west. YSU has no rivalries in the Valley and belongs somewhere in the East.

First - any talk at YSU about getting out of the Valley?

Second - if so, where you gonna go?

Third - anyone else want them?

They should move to the OVC. They would OWN that conference.

Would make sense to have a team from the Ohio Valley conference from Ohio since there are currently 0...

I'd personally hate to see YSU go anywhere else, but financially, how can they keep up having to go out to the Dakotas every year, and it's not like UNI/MSU/WIU are that much closer.

Youngstown has some history with Delaware but it was all in the 1970s. If you ever mention "the shootout" to a UD fan that wasn't born yesterday, they will immediately know what game you mean.

Anyone remember the original reason for EIU moving out of the Gateway? And YSU used to be a part of the OVC...Not that it'd be great to trade YSU for EIU.

EIU was a founding member of the Gateway. Left because they got tired of not being able to compete with UNI for the conf title. The Purple Cats were in the middle of a seven-year title run when EIU left.

I would love that if URI is official they take in more programs to get to 12. If it was Dayton/YSU it makes sense for the alignment.

Youngstown was in the OVC from '81-'87
then went Independent from '88-'96, when the joined the Gateway/MVFC.

I think many would agree with you about the MAC, but I hope you are not saying YSU is a flat ass broke football program lol..

When it comes to attendance this year, here is how the Ohio schools stack up:

1. Ohio State: 105,147
2. Cincinnati: 44,530
3. Toledo: 23,375
4. Ohio: 21,205
5. Bowling Green: 17,530
6. Youngstown State: 17,357
7. Kent State: 16,535
8. Miami (OH): 15,738
9. Akron: 12,716
10. Dayton: 3,593

I'm going to say that the numbers ffrom YSU on down are tickets sold, not butts in seats.

In years past the numbers were definitely off, but this year they have been pretty damn accurate. For instance the last game had 17,600 people, though I would have thought we had more. The east stands were completely sold out and the west stands, the big ones, had people in every seat except in the extreme corners.

Looks like a lot of empties to me. Anything would be better than our last visit. Hoping to make my 3rd straight trip in a few weeks.

I just gave myself a little Google Map geography lesson. I found out that Youngstown to Fargo (1,047 miles) is a farther driving distance any current Big Sky school to Missoula. It is 5 miles farther than Missoula to Flagstaff and 75 miles farther than Missoula to Sacramento. When Cal Poly comes aboard they will beat them.

You are in the land of FCS abundance east of the Mississippi. It's rediculous that you would travel farther than Big Sky schools for a confernce game. Time to cut down your carbon footprint with all that gas you're burning.

A move to the MAC would likely increase ticket sales revenue from more visiting fans, decrease travel costs greatly, and increase revenue from "money games" to such an extent to offset the cost of addition scholarships. If you look at a map comparing the MAC foot print to that of the MVFC & Horizon its a no brainer.
