SDSU @ UNI pre-game,game, post-game thread
Alright let's get this bitch rolling.
2 teams coming off FBS games last week. Jacks falling to UN-L 17-3 and UNI losing to Iowa State 27-0.
I have no idea what to make of this game. I do know the Jacks are relatively healthy, except a few dings. I don't think crowd noise and atmosphere will affect them any way you look at it. I was at Nebraska and let me tell you the UNI Dome isn't going to instill any sort of fear after that.
I don't remember the last time the Jacks went 0-4. However if the OL and DL play like they did last Saturday, I don't think I'll have to worry about it this year either. If we swarm 3-5 tacklers every play like against the Huskers, it'll be a long day for UNI. Show up like we did against Ill State....well....then it's a whole different ball game.
For the Jacks it all hinges on lessons learned and confidence gained by our young players.

I don't really have any confidence in UNI, and their ability on offense. But I do have confidence in the defense, and I don't think that SDSU has a team that can come into the Dome and win.
So I'll take UNI, 20-7

Other than fumbles why don't you have confidence in an offense that is putting up 410 yards per game?DJH wrote:I don't really have any confidence in UNI, and their ability on offense. Re: SDSU @ UNI pre-game,game, post-game thread
because of the fumbles
Really, it comes down to actual results, rather that potential. They haven't given me any reason to make me believe that they will fix this turnover problem. If we don't turn it over, we are a pretty damn good team. But that problem has not gotten any better in the first 3 games.

Series vs. SDSU: UNI leads, 25-17-2
TV:
Mediacom: Larry Morgan (play-by-play), Jerry Kiwala (analyst)

Radio: Panther Sports Network
Gary Rima (play-by-play), Scott Peterson (analyst)
THE GAME
Both teams are looking to bounce back after losing multiple games. The Panthers have dropped consecutive contests, losing to Stephen F. Austin and at Iowa State, and SDSU is looking for its first win of the season after suffering losses to Delaware, Illinois State and Nebraska.
THE SERIES
This is the 45th meeting between UNI and South Dakota State, and the Panthers lead the all-time series, 25-17-2. SDSU won the last meeting, 24-14 when the teams met last season in Brookings. The teams were knotted at 14-14 in the third quarter of that game, but SDSU scored 10 unanswered points to claim that victory.
THE COACHES
UNI head coach Mark Farley is in his 10th season at the helm of the Panther sideline. Farley has posted a mark of 84-44 in eight seasons, which includes five trips to the NCAA FCS playoffs.
John Stiegelmeier is in his 14th season as the Jackrabbits head coach. He has posted a mark of 83-63 at SDSU, and he took the Jackrabbits to the FCS playoffs for the first time in school history in 2009. Stiegelmeier served as a graduate assistant coach at UNI in 1981.
SECOND-HALF DEFENSE
The Panther defense has not given up a point in the second half in each of the last two games. UNI held Stephen F. Austin scoreless in the final two quarters on Sept. 18, and Iowa State’s only points in the second half came on interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.
STOPPING THE RUN
UNI leads the FCS ranks in rushing defense, giving up just 165 total yards in their three contests, averaging 52.00 yards allowed per game. The Panthers are giving up just 1.64 yards per carry.
RARE SHUTOUT
When UNI fell 27-0 to Iowa State on Saturday it was the first time the Panthers were on the wrong side of a shutout since losing the season opener to Iowa State 23-0 in 2004.
TURNOVER TROUBLES
The Panthers are -8 in turnovers on the season, throwing four interceptions and dropping seven fumbles, while forcing just three turnovers from their opponents. Seven of UNI’s turnovers have come in the red zone, including five inside the opponent’s 10-yard line.
A SPECIAL HONOR
Sophomore running back Carlos Anderson was named the MVFC special teams player of the week on Sept. 19 after racking up 179 yards on kickoffs, including 99 yards for a touchdown, when the Panthers faced Stephen F. Austin. Anderson also tallied 81 rushing yards.
RED ZONE WOES
The Panthers fumbled the ball inside the Stephen F. Austin 20-yard line three times, with SFA recovering all three drops. UNI turned the ball over inside the 20 twice in its season opener to North Dakota State, and the Panthers also missed a pair of field goals in that win.
ALL OR NOTHING
The Panthers’ three touchdowns against Stephen F. Austin all came on big plays, and two were on the first play of a drive. QB Tirrell Rennie took the Panthers’ first play from scrimmage for 75 yards and a touchdown. In the second quarter, RB Carlos Anderson returned a kickoff for 99 yards and a TD. Later in that quarter, WR Jarred Herring took a Rennie pass 83 yards for a score.
IN THE LONG RUN
Carlos Anderson’s 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown is the longest kickoff return among FCS teams this season. Tirrell Rennie’s 75-yard touchdown run against Stephen F. Austin is the sixth-longest run among FCS teams this season.
KEEP ON RUNNING
The Panthers have two of the nation’s top 10 rushers on their roster, with Carlos Anderson and Tirrell Rennie each ranking in the top 10 in rushing yards per game. Anderson’s average of 119.5 ranks seventh, and Rennie is 10th with 114.0 yards per contest.
MVFC HONORS
Ben Boothby was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week following his record-tying four-sack performance against North Dakota State on Sept. 11. The junior finished with 4.5 tackles for loss and seven total tackles in the Panthers’ season opener. Tirrell Rennie was named MVFC Newcomer of the Week after throwing for 172 yards and rushing for 96 in his Panther debut.
SACK ATTACK
The Panthers tied the school record with 11 sacks against North Dakota State on Sept. 11. Ben Boothby led the way with 4.0 sacks, tying the school record for sacks in a game. James Conley notched 2.5 sacks, and L.J. Fort tallied 2.0. The 11 sacks cost the Bison 77 yards, and the Panthers totaled 15.0 tackles for loss, resulting in 91 yards lost for NDSU. UNI’s 11 sacks are the most by an FCS team this season.
NATIONAL LEADERS
The Panthers enter their fourth game ranking among the national leaders in several statistical categories. UNI leads the nation in rushing defense, allowing just 52.0 yards per game. The Panther D also leads the FCS ranks with 5.67 sacks per game.
Carlos Anderson’s 198.0 all-purpose yards per game ranks third nationally, and Ben Boothby is tied for fourth in the nation with 1.67 sacks per game.
NATIONAL HONORS
Punter Kyle Bernarnd and linebacker James Conley were each named honorable mentions for the Week 2 College Football Performance Award at the FCS level on Sept. 12. Carlos Anderson was named the national kick returner of hte week by the organization on Sept. 19.
DOUBLE THREAT
Quarterback Tirrell Rennie tallied nearly 300 yards of offense in just three quarters of action against Stephen F. Austin. The junior threw for 162 yards and ran for 132 more before being knocked out of action with an injury late in the third quarter.
CARLOS’ CAREER DAY
Carlos Anderson set a career high with 158 rushing yards against North Dakota State on Sept. 11. Anderson carried the ball 11 times, averaging 14.4 yards per carry. It was the second career 100-yard game for the sophomore, with his previous mark of 113 coming against Youngstown State in 2009.
GETTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT
Quarterback Tirrell Rennie had an impressive debut for the Panthers, throwing for 172 yards and rushing for 96 in the Panthers’ win over North Dakota State. Rennie, a junior college transfer, was 10-of-20 for UNI.
QUITE A KICK
Kyle Bernard broke the UNI-Dome record with a 75-yard punt in the third quarter against North Dakota State on Sept. 11. With the Panthers leading 9-3 and facing fourth-and-two on their own 11, Bernard pinned the Bison inside their own 20, starting their drive on their own 14. The Panther forced NDSU to punt from their own 18 on that drive, and the ensuing UNI possession resulted in the Panthers’ only touchdown of the game.
WRONG WAY!
The UNI defense held North Dakota State to -40 yards rushing on Sept. 11, marking the first time the Panthers held an opponent to negative rushing yards since holding Northern Arizona to -44 yards rushing on Nov. 19, 2005. That total is still the fewest rushing yards allowed this season among FCS teams.
DOME-INATION
UNI holds a 174-44-1 record in the UNI-Dome. The Panthers have gone undefeated at home in a season seven times since 1990. Prior to a September 24, 1994, loss to McNeese State, UNI had won 29 straight regular-season games in the Dome dating back to the 1989 season when it lost 22-14 to Mankato State in the first game of the year.
PRESEASON ACCOLADES
UNI senior tight end Schuylar Oordt has earned several preseason honors, including preseason All-America honors from College Sporting News, the FCS Senior Scout Bowl, The Sports Network and Consensus Scout Services.
GETTING HIS KICKS
Kicker Billy Hallgren is on pace to become UNI’s all-time leading scorer. The senior has 298 points to his credit, 33 shy of the record of 331 set by Brian Wingert from 2003-06. UNI assistant coach Dedric Ward is second on the list with 304 point scored from 1993-96.

Your QB sucks, period.
We ran the ball 50 times today and averaged 5.5 yards per carry. If you can't slow a team that runs 50 times to less than 5.5 yards per carry you deserve to lose.
On the flip side, Minett is the real deal, and your only bright spot.

SDSU has no offense, and their QB is not good.
I said going into the game that if UNI didn't turn the ball over, they would have no problem winning. SDSU turned the ball over, and UNI didn't. And that was pretty much the story.

Mathematically, it's still possible that they could pull off 7 straight wins and get an at-large (or even the AQ if a bunch of Valley teams end up with 2 losses in conference).DJH wrote:Its October 2nd and your season is over.
