SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played on Saturday, September 18. Chattanooga's Joel Bradford and Furman's Adam Mims were named Co-Offensive Players of the Week while Western Carolina's Torez Jones earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Furman's Shawn Boone was selected as the Freshman of the Week, and Appalachian State's Jason Vitaris was tabbed as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office...

Congrats, especially to Mims and Boone. :thumb:

Eric Breitenstein would of had it locked down....had he played more than a quarter and half (6 carries for 133 yards  )...granted it was against Union but yards are yards :D

WCU's Torez Jones Honored Nationally

Cullowhee, N.C. - In addition to being named this week's Southern Conference's Defensive Player of the Week; SoCon Player of the Week by SouthernPigskin.com and College Football Performance Award's (CFPA) National Defensive Performer of the Week, Western Carolina's Torez Jones was also named a College Sporting News All-Star and the FCS co-Defensive Player of the Week by The Sports Network.

Jones becomes the first Catamount to earn a national weekly award since Mordy Ornguze earned Special Teams plaudits from The Sporting News during the 2006 season. Jones shared this week's defensive award with Jon Saelinger, a DB from Penn who recorded three picks.

Jones, a defensive back from Wilson, N.C., led the Catamounts with a career-best 12 solo tackles and tallied a school - and SoCon-tying - record four interceptions in WCU's 28-14 road win over Gardner-Webb. Four interceptions in a single-game has only occurred four times in SoCon history, with the most recent coming by Charlie Benson of Davidson back in 1957 in a game against VMI.

Elon WR Aaron Mellette gets Southern Pigskin's SoCon Offensive Player of the week for week 3. 18 Receptions 195 Yards 2 TDs (the second one as time expired is among the best grabs I've ever seen.)

From Elonphoenix.com
Also this week, Elon receiver Aaron Mellette received recognition for his Elon-record 18-catch performance at Richmond. Mellette, who posted the second-most receptions in league history, put up 195 receiving yards and two touchdowns on Saturday. He was honored as SoCon Offensive Player of the Week by SouthernPigskin.com and as the national wide receiver of the week by College Football Performance Awards. Mellette was also selected as a week three College Sporting News All-Star.
