Re: #6 UM @ #18 EWU Game Thread
Not gonna lie, this win feels GREAT!
We always give the Griz a tough fight, and vice-versa, but usually they come out on top with that one play that swings the game. So for once, we finally get that play. The Griz played a hell of a game, and it was ugly on both sides of the ball; 9 turnovers total between EWU and UM.
If Taiwan Jones doesn't get the Payton this year I'll be surprised. He's on track.
I rescind my statements before the season about BLM. He looked great in spring/fall ball. Not so much during the season. He's 52/99 (52%), with 5 TDs, 3 INTs.
Can't throw a deep ball to save his life (missed wide-open TJ down the sidelines tonight), and is always throwing high, causing our receivers to extend and tip passes, causing INTs.
Definitely a lot to work on, but a great win tonight. Another big game next week on the road against MSU, despite winning 7 in a row against the Cats. GO EAGS!!!!

I could have/should have added "crappy play calling" to my poll. How many times have we been in the red zone and settled for field goals because of movement backwards?Mvemjsunpx wrote:The bottom line is that the players—and coaches—need to manage the game better. I was particularly confused by the short-yardage play-calling. There was one series where Reynolds ran twice for 9 yards, then the team lined up in a 4-wide shotgun and ran a spread option w/ Roper (he was stuffed). There was also the toss play on 2nd.-&-goal from the 1 near the end when all the O needed to do was fall forward for a TD. If the Griz score there, they most likely win the game. Instead, it was 3rd.-&-goal from the 5 and eventually a field goal.

But wouldn't that also be poor discipline?AZGrizFan wrote:I could have/should have added "crappy play calling" to my poll. Poor discipline relates to the stupid penalties.grizzaholic wrote:But wouldn't that also be poor discipline?AZGrizFan wrote:

What about missed blocking assignments, poor blocking, poor decisions with the ball... Those are all lacking discipline.AZGrizFan wrote:Poor discipline relates to the stupid penalties.grizzaholic wrote:

Maybe this team NEEDS a hard ass as a coach that doesn't/shouldn't/won't put up with mental mistakes. I really hope the bus ride back to Missoula was filled with stops, flat tires, break downs.....anything and everything to make the feeling of back to back losses sink in as far as possible. This team has ZERO discipline. Special teams is a joke...D still cannot defend an option/running attack..for how many years now...since Wofford???? Earlier????.... QB play shows flashes and then shows bad decisions and dumb mistakes.
SO fucking pissed right now. Still. I have been telling lots of people and have been ridiculed for it....BH was a good coach...Boring but he knows how to play a grind it out game and win a few games along the way. With a high reward coach Offense/Defense comes a very high risk...We are seeing that right now.

And how can UM win the game if the D is on the field the entire time??? I like the big play as much as the other guy...but if the Griz score in 2 minutes or less or whatever the D gets no down time.

For as good Sambrano is, and he is very good. The thought of Reynolds pounding it out for 3 quarters and then running against a tired defense in the 4th quarter, scares me a lot more.
In defense of BML, he's not missing by much on a lot of his long balls. I would have liked to see a little more air under that deep ball to TJ in the 1st quarter, he was already 10 yards past any defender. Just let him run under it. We need to get Edwards going, and hit Hart coming out of the slot on short routes. We do that and BML will be fine. You can't expect to have Nichols every year.
The season Kaufman's (#1) has had so far cannot be overlooked. In addition to doing some outstanding down field blocking for TJ, he has made some incredible catches. This guy's legit.
Who called time out with 9 seconds left to kick the field goal? Make it a little easier on all of us and call that timeout with 3 or 4 seconds left.
I think Montana is a lot closer to going 9-2 than 1-10.

MSU scares me next week. That was a big win, and team should celebrate, but there is no room for a let down in preparation for an outstanding MSU team next week at Bozeman.

Montana may have turned it over 6 times and lacked discipline, but we made some mistakes as well. BLM's two int's the fumble on the kickoff, several key dropped passes.
The highligths for the griz were the brilliant end around call after the fumbled kick return, #29 (a receiver whose name I didn't recognize), the no huddle offense, and the most educated, well traveled, and rowdiest fans around.
The BSC is wide open at this point, and you guys have more depth at nearly every position than anyone else. So as injuries pile you'll absorb them better and improve.
No need to panic yet.

This team hasn't shown us any reason not to panic.kalm wrote:No need to panic yet.
The Big Sky is much better this year. If we don't right this ship soon, I could see us losing two or three more games.
Re: #6 UM @ #18 EWU Game Thread
Never got a chance.....but good game Montana fans, and good luck the rest of the way.
