Then the guy got all defensive when I mentioned he shouldn't question my football knowledge. Yep it sure blows when your teams message board only wants to talk hoops and only wants football to move up so hoops can become better. Actually, most Redbird fans I know want to move football up for the very simple reason that it's the right thing to do. Most Redbird fans want to compete with more similar type institutions (i.e. less smaller regional/directional unversities and more larger/non-directional/national universities). Yes it's true that a move up for football, properly done, would greatly help the other athletic programs (especially basketball), but the move is needed as much for the university as it is for the athletic dept.

That all sounds great on the surface, but the reality is nothing could be further from the truth. The only likely viable option is the MAC. The MVC is so vastly superior to the MAC in all sports other than football, it isn't even close really. Leaving the MVC for the MAC makes about as much sense as nailing your own testicles to a 2X4 with an air nailer. The MAC flat out sucks as compared to the MVC.

The trick is to advance football without tossing the rest of our athletic program in the crapper. Easier said than done.

We are traditionally a basketball school, in the sense that that's where the big donors and support comes from. Go to them with any plan that involves leaving the MVC and you'll be flat out laughed at. It just isn't happening anytime soon.

As far as the university goes, we're doing just fine. We have seperated ourselves academically from everyone not named UI(among the publics). And they are hearing footsteps and starting to get a little puffed up about it. I know its just one indicator, but the avg ACT for entering freshmen is right there with UI, and clearly better than any other public in IL.
