Not only that, but it was also one of the phantom personal fouls called on Jimmy Wilson. It not only allowed Cal Poly to keep the ball, but it also gave them a first down.Willie wrote:No excuses being made here, but check this out. I really didn't want to be the guy to say it, but in spite of what you brought back from last year it's still a transition year with the new coach. I thought the preseason #1 or #2 was MAYBE a bit high, but UM always fields a solid team. I wish the best to UM this season (hopefully you're #2uofmman1122 wrote:Ugh....What a heartbreaking loss. That said, hats off to Cal Poly. You guys deserved that win much more than we did.
I hope this brings our Griz back down to Earth. They have a ton of work to do.

It sounds like the ruling was an illegal hit and retained possession, and not that he was down thus no fumble.Silenoz wrote:I wasn't aware hitting with your shoulder was a penaltyjd of de wrote:

I can't tell from the photo how initial contact was made, but if he led with his shoulder, that is a bad call. If not, it may not be over, EWU had a player suspended last year prior to the Montana game for a helmet to helmet hit, which was actually shoulder to helmet.
I understand the rule is to protect against concussions, but it is a really tough rule for the officials to get right. It all happens so fast, and depending upon the officials angle it could appear helmet to helmet when initial contact is not with the helmet. I'm all for protecting the players, but I think this rule puts too much on the officials.

Some questionable calls against Montana for sure but also a critical missed face mask call on the Shumway fumble that led to a Montana TD.SeattleGriz wrote:Not only that, but it was also one of the phantom personal fouls called on Jimmy Wilson. I have nothing for respect for Montana and their fans, but Cal Poly has been on the wrong end of some questionable calls in Missoula. Foward progress my @ss on that 4 and 13 play that led to a Montana game winning FG with 5 seconds left in 2006. There have been others. Unfortunately it is part of the game. Sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it goes against you.
Montana will be back. I think they will use this game as motivation and go on a roll all the way to another Big Sky Championship and the playoffs. I would not want to have to face Montana again in the playoffs.

Good win for Cal Poly. Always a good team and has a good deal of speed out there. Man that Shumley kid came in and did a real nice job.
There were questionable calls particularly in the first quarter but who fuckin' cares that shit happens all the time to every body. Cal Poly did what it took and they got us...that's all there is to say about that game.
Now as far as the rest of the season goes...
Our offense is nowhere near where it is gonna be in a few weeks. We struggled to find continuity and that is not unexpected at this stage. But you can tell that once they all get comfortable (coaches, players) then this is gonna be a real point producer. Either that or it's gonna be a real stat producer for opposing DB's and LB's.
Our fucking defense is gonna be a real force. They are fast, physical mofo's with a bad attitude. A little settling in on that side of the ball as well and I think we'll be real good there.
I don't feel real bad after that loss. It would have been great to pull it out but when you're playing a team with the kinda guts that Cal Poly always has then you can't afford the mistakes. We lost to a good team but it looks to me like we are gonna be a real mothafucka in the next few weeks and going forward.

College football: Rule changes in 2010
Defenseless Player: Contact to Head or Neck Area. No player shall target and initiate contact to the head and neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder.
Call it bad judgment or a bad angle by the official; call it a lot of thing. But not phantom.

As Tony Smith was falling foward Jimmy Wilson put his elbow to his head taking his helmet off and the official correctly called the penalty.jd of de wrote:College football: Rule changes in 2010

Look at this highlight video which shows Jimmy taking a shot to his head (3:30 mark of the video): http://videos.sanluisobispo.com/vmix_ho ... &sort=NULL" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It does not matter what he led with, it matters that it was a hit directly to the head.

You are exactly right Slo Stang it was a blow to the head and was a personal foul.
BTW the Griz fans that are crying like little bitches about the refs look pretty stupid doing so. Plus its hard to get a clear view of the play when most of them have their head so far up their ass they can see what they ate at the tailgate.
You guys won, you beat us, you were the better team.
No excuses here we were not prepared to play at your level. Congrats.

Re: Montana @ Cal Poly Thread
Interestingly enough, the only questionable calls all came on the SAME series (there were about 5 in a row), and other than that it appeared to be a fairly well reffed game. Seems like the refs had it in for the Griz for about a 6 minute span but other than that it was fairly matched (and interestingly enough, CP didn't score on that drive, as thats the one where they fumbled on the 3). Thus, if a list is being made of why the Griz lost this game, reffing is WAY down towards the bottom.SloStang wrote:Good call CPAlum.CPAlum wrote:

IMHO, I have the following questions about the Griz:
Punter. WHAT. THE. FUCK. Is he REALLY the best we could find?
Selle. WHAT. THE. FUCK. Is he really THAT uncomfortable in this style of offense? He missed wide open receivers a half dozen times...at LEAST.
Reynolds. Is he hurt? 15 carries in 2 weeks? Montana won't have a Payton winner this year.
Dan Moore. Does he know where is is yet?
Offensive Line. WHAT. THE. FUCK. We'd better pass every play....that's the only kind of blocking they know how to do.
Cornerbacks. Really? an 83 yard TD?
There are WAY more questions than answers, but one thing is for certain. Moutra is a BEAST. Flat out fucking AWESOME. And I agree with Ursus....CP played their hearts out and the Griz have a ton of things to straighten out. Better to lose to CP than to EWU next weekend.

It's the same guy as last year, so I have no idea. He was slow on his delivery last season (though he only got one blocked because of outstanding protection), so maybe the coaches are having him speed things up & he's not responding well.AZGrizFan wrote: Punter. WHAT. THE. ****. Is he REALLY the best we could find?
I did find it odd that Carver replaced him on one punt instead of McKnight. Maybe the coaches had a fake called.
He's throwing high quite a bit. He did that the first couple games last year, too. Hopefully he'll figure it out quickly like he did in 2009. Fortunately, Roper looks a lot better than he did last year. It seemed to me like Roper got better protection than Selle, though.Selle. WHAT. THE. ****. He was apparently hurt in practice or something. He missed a chunk of time Saturday because of that.Reynolds. Is he hurt? 15 carries in 2 weeks? Montana won't have a Payton winner this year.

Fortunately, it looks like EWU had even more issues crop up in their game than the Griz, including a concussion to Taiwan Jones and some injuries to the defense. There are WAY more questions than answers, but one thing is for certain.
